I bought a 1940's Singer sewing machine in the cabinet, with all of the accessories and manuals for........ are you ready for this.................$19.95! Only thing that's missing is the power cord - kind of important huh? But I"m hoping I can pick one up on-line. I'll post a pic when dh brings it in the house tonight!!I also got a big bag of trim, lace and ric-rac for $3.99 and some little kids jeans for .50. It's a new store, so I hope they don't realize they're way cheaper than everyone else and raise the prices!!

I did a little research about my machine and this is what I found out - it was actually manufactured between l950-1952. It is a model 201-2 and from the comments I have read on blogs and e-bay, it is a real work horse. Do any of you have this machine? And if so, do you know where I can get a power cord? I've searched e-bay, but couldn't find any. Thanks.

So cool, Sherri! You really scored! Have you found a power cord yet? Have you tried ebay? I know there have been dealers who sell new/old parts for lots of vintage appliances. I found foot pads for my GE monitor top fridge and a manual for my wringer washer.

Singer 201 is a good machine; keep it cleaned and oiled and it will outlive you. If you can find an old Singer treadle cabinet you can drop it right in and forget about looking for a power cord :-)
There are all kinds of attachments you can find for it, too: buttonholer, zigzagger, blindstitch, ruffler, etc. Just look for any attachment for a low-shank machine.

It's easy -- First get a leather belt for the treadle; they cost $6-10, depending if you get it online or are impatient and go to a sewing shop. Remove the belt that is on the machine now, it goes from the motor to the handwheel. Set the machine on the treadle base and thread the belt around the big wheel under the cabinet up and around the grooves by the handwheel. They usually give you a staple to secure the ends of the belt but I sew mine with artificial sinew or dental floss. The belt should be tight enough not to slip when you sew but not too tight or it makes it harder to sew. If you want a handcrank machine, handcranks are available for under $15 and it takes about 5 minutes to put on.

I got my power cord today from the link - someone, sorry, can't remember who it was, told me about and the machine WORKS LIKE A CHARM!!!!!!!! I'm so excited to try it out. Also got my bobbins and cover plate for my treadle and they fit great. My dh pointed out to me this weekend that I now have 7 sewing machines - I couldn't believe it until he pointed them out to me. My Viking Rose that I use everyday, a backup cheap Singer for when I go to the cabin and use a generator, my mom's old Sears machine, my mom's old Free Westinghouse, my serger, my treadle and my new old Singer 201-2. Kind of embarassing...........I SHOULD have an even dozen!!!!
