In my kitchen this morning there is a lovely browned pork shoulder roast in the crockpot with celery, carrots, a local pear, and local Walla Walla Sweet onion browned in the roast drippings~ it will be dinner tonight served over brown rice with salad.

There are garbanzo beans soaking for making hummus in a day or two.

There are pears sliced up in the dehydrator.
There are a box of pears from the orchard across the dirt road waiting to be turned into Pear Honey, and a box of local Golden Delicious apples ready to be dehydrated, turned into pie filling and frozen, and the leftovers made into a crisp for tomorrow.

Pumpkin seeds needing to be soaked, and a jar of kefir needing to be strained and fed.

Two dozen eggs are being hardboiled for the week ahead, and I'm hoping my man is bring ome an elk this weekend, so then the kitchen will be really busy!

I love my big kitchen! I can see my horses and some of the goats and chickens out the huge window...hawks, blue herrons flying low, an occassional coyote, and once in awhile and owl!

I love the sounds of your harvest kitchen, And oh I can almost smell the cookin too.

I'm getting ready to make Pear Honey to , my honey can get a whole pint jar at one helping if I let him, but for good reasons I take it away so i can have some.

I never have tried or made kefir, but heard its good for you. Maybe this is the year to get some new things going.

I think your kitchen would be the favorite room of your home, and a beautiful view as well.

Hope you get your elk , have fun in your kitchen today

Me, I am trying to put up more "organic" pear preserve. My FIL has a pear tree and we plucked it dry this past weekend, Some of them are too ripe for canning so I am making pear butter...........I thought I would try some of MJ's jam too.. using the chillover power... But not sure how much pear puree to use as the "recipe" says two pounds of berries.. HUM~

I bought some new pots and pans. They are a waterless cooking kind. They are from Kitchecraft by Westbend. I have seen them for the past 20+ yrs and finally broke down and bought some. Now I have to learn how to cook all over again.. My new high is now medium, old medium is now my new low. There is also the new deal to cook w/o oils, margerines, butters, etc....I have to admit, food has a new taste to it now, much better, cooking without water, etc....

my hubby and i just got done doing the major renovation work to my tiny country kitchen! EVERYTHING is new! my hubby built our cabinets and counters, we bought beautiful butcher-block countertop, and laid new tile. knocked out part of a wall and put in a counter/cabinet island and it really opened up the room! so i'm totally excited to keep trying out my new cooking space. i'm waiting for new towel holders so i can hang up my new fall kitchen towels! i have nothing cooking today since we'll be having yummy leftovers. but i have on display an orange streusel coffee cake my husband made in my cake holder. it makes a very pretty decoration!

Liz~ Your husband made the cake? Lucky girl! Your kitchen sounds very cute. You should post some pictures if you get a chance.

Right now not too much is going on in my kitchen. I spent my afternoon sewing some PJ pants for my little boy and now we are getting ready to go out to eat with my husband's father, grandmother, and aunt. Not exactly looking forward to it, but we will get through it, hopefully quickly!!

The last of the peaches I canned today are in the water bath canner now. I only did 19 jars today..but I am done. I did more on Monday (about 30 jars) I usually do ALOT more peaches but we had about 40 jars still from last year (I really really did alot last year) so I cut back. I still may go get one more box..we will see. I am getting ready to make supper....tamale pie made with leftover roast beef...I love the cheesey corn bread topping.
I have two kids doing homework at the kitchen table and a basket of plums waiting to become jam right after supper tonight too.

Aunt Jenny,
Your peaches are beautiful! I canned peaches for the first time ever. Looking at your peaches I might not have enough liquid in them. They are covered with the liquid but there is "space" at the top. They sealed. Do you think they are ok?

My kitchen is really clean right now, which is a nice change. :)

Tonight for dinner, I made stuffed pork chops...locally grown by my in-laws. I also made chicken salad for lunch tomorrow and cut up all of the veggies for stir-fry tomorrow night.

So far, I have not had time to "put up" anything for winter.

Hey Erin..they are probably fine. You only have to leave 1/2" air space at the top. I usually just stop filling where the screw rings on the jar start if that makes sense. I have surely filled them not full enough before and they were still fine to eat. They may darken where they are out of the liquid some is all. As long as they sealed!!

Love reading about what is going on in eveyone's kitchen. Sounds so yummy and friendly.

I just got a new breadbaker, that makes larger loaves, and I am trying out the "long" recipe today. I made one loaf already, one that takes only one hour to bake, and it was delicious.

Well let's see here-first I need to get off this computer!! Today will be either can the tomatos that are ripe or make sauce out of them then can them, haven't decided that one yet. Make a batch of yogurt. Bake four loves of bread. Make the box of apples I picked up yesterday into applesauce or butter and get that canned. Somewhere in there cook up some dinner. I love this time of year, the kitchen always has something going on.

when i take some pictures of my new kitchen after it's completely finished, i'll post some before and after pics.

not much going on in my kitchen today. though i did just make homeade cranberry waffles! anyone have any advice on good waffle makers? mine like to stick. how about the old cast-iron ones that you use over the fire?

ooh! a new breadmaker! i just started using mine (my old one broke, so my grandma sent me hers because she never uses it) and i love it! i'd love to hand make breads, but i just don't have enough time right now while going to college. i ordered "The Complete Bread Machine Bakery Book" by Richard W. Langer from paperbackswap.com and i'm excited to try it out!

I just went out and picked a sack full of turnip greens and they are cooling now to go into the freezer later. I've got a tree full of apples to be picked and canned.
I have finally got about 3 gallons of goat milk and I will be able to make cheese!!!!! I will have to make the buttermilk first though and that will take 24 hrs. So I'll start the cheese about this time tomorrow! I'm so exited!
All ya'll that have pears are so lucky. The trees around here are just not ripe yet. I think hopefully by the end of Oct? Or I might just go down to Atlanta in a few weeksto the farmers market and get a few boxes. I want LOTS of pears this year because we didn't get any last year.

sounds fun Kris, I bet making cheese and buttermilk is interesting. I put up several quarts of Apple pie filling, and made 21 pints of salsa, it is actually good, and today I have a Chocolate cake baking for my nephews birthday tomorrow.

Hey there, Kelly.

Can you share a good recipe for the pie filling? I've heard it can be done canned or frozen. My freezer is full so I'd like to can the rest.

Thanks

My husband works from home on Fridays. Between working in his office, he is in the kitchen making bread! Today it is wheat bread with flax seed! Nice having a man in the kitchen! I think I will make some yummy chichen soup to go with his bread!

Today I made hamburger buns. Started them in the bread machine and then before the 2nd rise, took the dough out and made buns. Doing the 100% whole wheat. Hope they are as good as they smell. Finished mowing the grass. Our yard/gardens are 2 acres. Takes me a couple of days since I have to work it in with the canning. Using up a few tomatoes in a small batch of salsa. Did 7 qt of apple pie filling yesterday so giving myself a rest from apples and doing tomatoes. Getting ready to go out and cut okra so will get it ready for the freezer or fix it for supper. I can feel autumn in the air when I go out in the morning. Frost is just a few weeks away. Tomatoes still comming on and still have an apple tree that has not been picked. haven't finished the first one yet. I think the kitchen, laundry room and celler is going to be full of apples for a long time.
