Quick check in to say I'm back from voting - and there was no waiting line at our polling place. I was really surprised because our church building is used for voting and our parking lot was 3/4 full when I stopped by to drop off a salad for an after-funeral dinner (the mother of one of our members passed away). I'm going with Robbie tonight when he goes to vote and I'll be bringing AVM to read in line. Actually he'll probably be reading AVM and I'll bring another one for me!

Rene, how are you doing today? I'm sure the emotional after-effects will be there for awhile but are you feeling any physical ones? You've had quite the run lately with the fall at the farmers markets and now this.

TS, when we were visiting DH's aunt & uncle in CO, they had already mail-in voted. We don't have that in Missouri but I thought it was a great idea since you can see exactly what's on the ballot and do some research before voting. Didn't think about the fraud issue though - that's giving me pause............

I'm taking off again to run pre-trip errands. Have a great rest of the day, mavens.

God bless -

Well hi there ladies!

I do apologize for last night. I've been having nightmares again, and when Jerry got home, I needed some time with him. The nightmares started right after my mom passed away so i know it is a stress thing. I go through cycles with sleeping. I'm not in a good cycle.

Ya'll were chatty last night!

I have been in an introspective sort of way lately as well. Yesterday I just got in the car and drove...for 5 hours. No music, no plan, just me and the country roads. It felt good! I"ve also been weaning myself off of the computer a little bit. I told Karen once that I get on around 9am in the morning and I usually dont sh** down until 7 at night. Its too much and I need to do other things as well.

Its 72 degrees here today and will be again tomorrow, so i will be enjoying the outdoors. I threw straw bales down from the barn mow and built a straw wall for the hens. I collected 7 eggs today. They were slackers yesterday, only gave me 5. I mulched the rhubarb and strawberries again and plotted my revenge on the back of the corn crib where my blackberry bushes will be planted next spring. I really haven't thought too much about seeds yet.

I am going to try to finish reading AMV in the next 2 days so that I dont have to renew it.

Also, I cleaned out my cupboards and threw out a bunch more stuff. Today i made mixes. Pancake mix, yellow cake mix, chocolate cake mix, hot cocoa and some other things. My pantry is stocked with healthier options now! I was tired of talking about it but not doing anything about it.... so I buckled down.

I also "farmgirled up" and put out my business flyer. Since I have no produce to sell throughout the winter other than eggs I am taking holiday candy/pie and cookie orders. I am hoping for some income with that!

I really miss ya'll..... I think I got in so deep with the Mavens that I didn't know how to apply my time. I'm sticking to a do-able schedule now!

Hope everyone is well....

WOW Tina,
Sounds like your having a blast. We had a bad frost and I lost all my plants that were seeding... UGH! Of course now the weather is fine again (of course).

Hey, Dawnzo! No worries about last night. It was great to have you for a while at least. Fall seems to be the time for introspection. Usually it hits me after the holidays but it must be coming early this year. You, me, Annika, another friend of mine, we're all going deep. Maybe it's a maven thing (except for my friend - she actually just borrowed my introspection insights!). Five hours on the road. Sounds great to me.......that is if DH was driving! I'm not the road warrior I used to be. Spending five hours driving the country roads this time of year - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, wonderful! And this time of year I would think people would be grateful for homemade goodies. I had a baking marathon one year and gave cookies and candies to my cousins for Christmas. It was so appreciated. I figured it would be no big deal but none of them baked anymore and the hubbies were ecstatic.

TM, what a find. Hope they still have seeds left when we get back from our trip. Nothin's happening before then. Too much to do, too little time.............

Rene, so glad you're back. Shoot, so glad you're still here after your episode last night. I always smile when I see your posts.

I'm gonna sign off for the night, mavens. I'm trying not to do anything that might clue me in to how the election results are going. Sometimes I get so caught up in the drama I don't get to sleep for hours, especially when it's close. Haven't heard anything about it today so I'm going to head for bed without a clue. That's a first - regarding elections anyway. There are many times I head to bed without a clue - hehhehheh!!!

Sweet dreams, all....................

God bless -

hey gals!
yeah..I'm having fun finding a few seeds to add to my stash.
Hubby found out that the area we are moving to has some awesome ag programs for small farms and more...
they have things like bee keeping classes
and oh my.. then there's a class they'll be having in March on starting a hydroponics farm..and you get to visit a hydroponics farm of your choice..either a 5 acre set up, or a 1 acre set up that sells herbs to chefs/food places...you get to see the marketing ideas and so forth.I'd love to attend that class, but don't know how things will go yet.(if we'll be in the area by then or not)
But the area seems to be very ag friendly.
And they are holding a town meeting this week in the area to start up yet another farmers market there.
I would really like to be able to grow a few things for a small market.
But anyhow..yep..I'm really looking forward to a lot of new possibilities...changes.
And collecting the heirloom seeds is a step in that direction for me.

Good morning Mavens, Good evening Corinne, our other side of the world Maven,
Boy quiet day yesterday on the ole' forum. Hmmmm.
I forgot to tell y'all my good news. One of our city council members keeps bees and I think I've got him talked into mentoring me with some hives. I've taken the classes etc, but haven't worked a hive yet so I'm pretty excited.
I believe I am going to join SSE today. After I finish at the cafe today, I'm doing paperwork and I am going to get it done so I can get those new catalogs!!
Tina, you have such a great magazine, I didn't get to read everything, but what I did I was surely impressed.

Morning Mavens, great news Teresa sue, how lucky you are to get some hives, that will be very interresting to see what you plant to attract them.
Tina, thanks for the link, you did very well indeed.

Oh TS, I do hope that you get those bees.... I'd love to trade you for some beeswax. I want to learn how to make my own lip balm...not in a pot, in a tube. I am going to research that today. I have an idea forming in my noggin' and I want to research everything before I act on it....more details to follow in time.

I too have been seriously thinking about joining seed savers. I have not really done much in planning for next year's crop, as I've been reading AMV every spare moment I have. BUT: I will be starting soon.

I had a neat experience the other day. An Amish woman pulled into the drive asking about a tree that I had in the yard. I told her I didnt know what it was but its dropping nuts like crazy..... she told me it was a shagbark hickory (I thought it might have been...). Anyhow, she is going to trade my a cake and a basket for the ones on the ground. We picked up 2, five gallons bckets full already. Next year, I plan on watching that tree closely so that i can sell them. Whodathunk? Another neat tid bit, is that she was very sweet, and I invited her to sell her baskets at the farm market next Spring. That in itself will be a crowd pleaser! I told her of my plans to plant all heirloom varieties and she said she may be able to help me out on some things! I told her that I didnt know much about certain things )like I'v ehad NO luck growing melons and didnt know what to do with hickory nuts). She was so patient with me as she cracked open a hickory nut and showed me how to dig out the meat and what to use it for. Then she told me a couple tricks with melons..... I am not usually a fan of the Amish for other personal reasons, but I am not close minded enough to allow that to dictate that bias towards them all. There are good and bad in all walks of life. I hope I met a good one!

Today I am hoping to finish some Christmas gifts. I wish I knew how to quilt or sew better as I'd make other things. Everyone around here is sick to death of my jewelry! LOL.... I am planning on making my own Christmas cards this year. Do you know if I can mail handmade postcards? I guess i could if the decor is not too bulky....

Well, have a nice day everyone. Take care. Happy new president day and all that stuff.

Wow! Mavenly things are a-happenin'! Tina's got a great ag opportunity, Teresa Sue's going to get a bee education, Dawn's got a great resource and business is growing. WOO HOO!

Good morning, Alee, Corinne and all you wonderful mavens. Would chat longer but I just left a long blurb on the HMBC and need to get some stuff done or Robbie will go on vacation without me. Actually he wouldn't be able to go either as I do all the packing and prep since he does the grunt work (i.e. bringing in the paycheck).

Will check back in this afternoon.......

Hey there!

Corrine: I have a hickory tree... I will see about the baskets.

Went to bank today and its official. I have a business account. If I have given the impression that I'm not nervous about starting a business in the economy. forgive me.... i think its all catching up with me today... I keep shaking my head and asking myself...."what do you THINK you're doing?" I also found out today that there is an heirloom farm about an hours drive north of me (right by the lake...Lake Erie) and they raise food for gourmet chefs in Cleveland. Hmmmmmm....very interesting........ I have a friend that lives in that town so i am going to shoot her an email and see what pops up.

Lora: Hubby said gas prices skyrocketed again last night. It'll take a few days for the cost to take affect, but am warning you before you come out. If the prices are high by next week, dont sweat it!

Alee: I think I will just put them in envelopes. Better safe than sorry.

Okay girls, I am off here for awhile. i have that customer due here soon and need to put the dogs up.

Hey Dawnzo, do you think you could take some pic of those Amish baskets? I love good, well made baskets. I like the Longaberger baskets, but they have gotten so high priced I just can't afford them anymore. Yes, when I get my bees, I would trade beeswax with you,:^)
Well, gonna go eat lunch, get out all the paperwork and get bills paid. Need to put another log on the fire.....brrrr......winters here.

Teresa, I have Longaberger too... if there is something you like, let me know and I will GLADLY ship it to you.

Miss Denise: I have made my mixes from the "Taste of Home Cookbook 2002". I will post some recipes on the henhouse forum. I tweaked a few here and there, but all in all, I think it'll be okay.

Right now I'm in black walnut he**. I gathered, I shucked the husks, I dried and today, I had a 3 hour date with the vice in the workshop splitting those suckers open and scooping the nut meat out. I am beat. My hands are numb. This is painstaking work. I honestly dont know how BK did it for her family. I'm worn out over stupid nuts. (Dont let my whining fool you, I do find a sense of accomplishment in here somewhere...maybe after I make brownies... haha...)

I am almost.... I said almost looking forward to crummy weather so I can do inside stuff. The days have been a picture perfect autumn-y 70 degrees of late and I am spending every secone outdoors. I encourage you to do so if you can!

First things first - Rene I am so glad you are okay!! I will be thinking about you.
Sorry I have missed checking in for a couple days - I am on day 9 of working 12 in a row and I tend to shut down and only do maybe two of the 8 things I normally do in a given day. It is the only way I can get through a long stretch.
Thanks to all for birthday wishes:)
I just used up all my available computer tolerance catching up with y'all so I am gonna have to go.

Good morning/evening Mavens,
Amy Grace, I had a feeling you were doing "time" at work. Been there, done that, have the t-shirt. Don't let the man suck the life outta ya, farmgirl. Sorry, I never said that in the 70's and I thought I'd just give it a spin, lol! Miss ya, when do you get time off for good behaviour?

Cool..... I hope it works for all of us... where is computer literate Alee when you need her?

Okay, all the black walnuts are done. Thank goodness. Today I am packing for my trip to the Poultry Show and taking care of some quiet time, so this is all I'm gonna give you today....

TS: read the "what keeps you at MJ's" thread. I am in tears over that! How touching!

Amy! So good to hear from you. I figured you were working your tushy off as well.

Marcy Jo: I willbe calling you soon to get some ideas on paper for the Spring Fling... so dont think I've forgotten about it. I'm actually planning on planning (lol) the bulk of it after Christmas. Sound good?

Karen: last night's phone call was HILARIOUS.... I'm still giggling over my "insecurities".... ME! ME! OOH! PICK ME!! hahahahaha!

To the rest of the gang: have a great wknd. I will TRY to check in at least once before I leave tomorrow. BIG HUGS AND SMOOCHIES!
