Yeah Dawn! that's the Maven spirit! Get a jump on the season with the cold frames. I need to get my rear in gear and finish the coop before I can think of cold frames and then I'll likely be knee deep in snow. I'd like the hen hotel plans too! Ok, I'm new to chickens , are the saddles to keep them from being plucked bald by the roosters breeding them or are the for warmth? I'm curious.I've never heard of them.

The book that I have Amy Grace and others, is from 1977 and is by Rodale Press called "Build it better yourself" is that the book? It is a really cool book with lots of plans for the farm and garden. If you find it in a used book store or on Amazon or something, it is worth it. Give it a look if you can.

Thanks for the book info, Annika. I'll have to check out my new favorite old bookstore (it's my first favorite actually - I didn't have a previous favorite) for that one. I'm wanting a much bigger dehydrator for next year since I had so much fun with my little one this summer.

Annika~I am going to look if my library can get a copy of that book for me.
Dawn~I completely agree about the computer time. It can just suck you in. I can't wait to see your bracelets. I hope you do well with the Hen Hotels!!
I think Karen's newsletter is so great because if you haven't had time to catch up with the posts you miss, you can catch up with the newsletters.
Thank you Karen for all your hard work!!!!!

Lora, the first time I read your "I'll do it!" post, I couldn't figure out what you wanted to do. I was just doing my copying thing from posts to Word and seeing it in context after Rene's post, are you volunteering to oversee the DOE thread? If so, you've got my vote, mavenfriend. You've been wanting to get more involved - this could be just what you've been waiting for! If it that's not what you were referring to, please clue me in..........I'm lost..............again..............look for me in the woods...............walking in a circle.............I'll stop now

Hi Mavens! Where do I start? The chriro is helping significatly. It kills me to spend that much money, cause things are tight, but I figure if I want to be able to work my homestead I have to be able to walk, move, etc. I just keep telling myself it's an investment in my labor force, ME, LOL. ======= Dawn I really understand what you are saying about being on the computor. Since this thread has started I have NOT got anything done. I can't keep going like this! Do you think there is some way we could have one day or evening when we could all get together and cackle? I'm not a techie so I don't even know if that is possible. ====== Thank you dear Corinne for noticing my badges. Those two almost came hand in hand they were so intertwined. I have four now. If I ever get off the computor I might actually get them embroiderd, lol. ===== The other badge I was talking about earning at the same time we are working on our current one is the Farmgirl Gratitude badge. You write down every day one thing you are grateful for. It sounds like there are several of you that would like to do it so I'll put up the info in the projects/Henhouse as soon as I get time so be looking for it. ===== Congrats Dawn on your decision to Etsy. I'm seriously thinking about doing the same thing. ===== Mavens I have one of Dawn's bracelets and it is really, really nice. I get compliments on it all the time. Dawn I saw some similar to it in San Diego at one of the trendy shops in Old Town, which is the original San Diego and I swear they were selling for $4o and $5o apiece. ===== Rene I can't wait to see the Maven Minor requirements. It'll be fun doing that. So far I think I'm going to be able to make the Rosalia event. I'm looking forward to meeting you and Amy Grace and all the other local Farmgirls. ====== Annika I hope you can come up too cause I need to meet you also. I think you and I girl are going to be able to learn lots of things together. I felt really bad that you were feeling bad yesterday, I was trying to comfort you and I think I only made it worse :( I'm hoping you are feeling better. Congrats on your hens, I can't wait for some, but it will be a couple of years yet. Feeling sorry for self now. Okay, I'm done, LOL Okay, I have 25 min left and I have to get off computor, so I better check out the coop. --- Fun thing, I'm going to Spokane tomarrow to the Washington State Quilters (WSQ) Quilt show. It's really a great show.

Dawnzo, I was in the coop earlier today and saw your new nest - smashing decorating scheme, I must say. Also cracked open the egg and read it. Again, very useful info. Didn't know about cutting sprouts to thin them vs. pulling. Will file that little tidbit away. Just checked and there are new posts in every folder (I think) since I last checked so going there now to read the latest. Anything special you want me to see?

Later that same day........I'm back from the coop. Are we talkin' 'bout recipes, my friend? |

Dawn -I meant the Christmas thing - What would overseeing the DOE thread entail? I guess I missed that part. Speed reading has its disadvantages.
I picked #1 for the Christmas thing if it's not already taken.
Thanks, Lora #358

Sorry, Lora, I jumped the gun there I guess. One of the annoying things that can happen when we post is that they don't get out there in real chronological order - when we respond to a post others may get in between the post we're responding to and our response. So don't feel obligated because I brought it up. I just knew you were looking for something to do so I thought that's what you were referring to. Look for the thing that makes your heart sing. You want something you feel passionate about - otherwise it will become a chore and not fun. (Those wise words are came to me from Rene)

Hey everybody!! Annika and Karen - yes, the book Annika mentioned is the book. It is awesome. I got my copy at Bookpeople in Moscow for my husbands birthday - evidently his parents had it when he was little and it was his all time favorite book to look at, didn't know that when I bought it but I ended up looking like a genius. Teresa Sue - glad the chiropracter is helping Dawn, news on the CT scan? Brenda - I had to laugh at your businessman/chicken/egg story - one of the more delicate things I have had to do in my employment at an organic food store was to explain to a couple of little old ladies what makes a fertile egg fertile and why it is good Alee- have you read any Frances Moore Lappe, I remember reading one of her books in an Anthropology class and there was a lot in it on the fallacies of the green revolution (the first one that involved higher yields of agriculture, not the current one where everyone is all of a sudden "going green") It is worth checking out for your paper, I think. Dawn - I totally understand about the computer time, I have had to cut down on my daily time to one check in per night. I really have to work on christmas gifts, feed the family etc. Oh and did you get my email about Chrismas? I will take number 5 Good morning Corinne - when is your next trip to France, are you going between now and spring? Talk to y'all soon Amy Grace

Grrrr! I just got my sisterhood renewal notice but the check out won't accept my email and password! I emailed Sunny, she'll fix it =) Amy Grace, it is a wonderful book! I love mine and have umpteen projects that I want to do =) Teresa Sue, you didn't make me feel worse, I'm just being tetchy...I'm feisty and fine today! I'd love to meet you and the rest of the girls in Rosalia. I'll just have to see if I have time to get away from farm chores.

I completely understand. If I don't see you that day it will be at another time. It seems like I have to go, go ,go and sometimes it just seems like such a luxury to stay home and putter around. I really am a dyed-in-the-wool homebody.

GOOD MORNING/EVENING MAVENS!!!!! I'm not yelling, I'm just in a great mood. The chiro is working and I feel good, course I suppose all those organic green veggies I've been eating hasn't hurt, lol. It's Fri, and I don't have to be at the cafe, oooohrah! I have a little time I can spend here with my friends. I'm going to one of the best quilt shows around for a couple of hours this morning. Then I'm going to the cemetery and spruce it up a bit, maybe do some end of the year mowing if the weather holds. It's a good day. ==== Annika, last night when I had to get up in the middle of the night, the thought came to me that you will be able to apply for the GARDEN GATE/4. BACKYARD FARMER badge when you get your hens all settled in! Yea! ======

The second edition of The Mavens Haven is now available for your reading pleasure!
In case you’ve noticed that the newsletter was posted a day early, you get the golden egg. Since hubby and I are still on our trip, I’m posting a day early as I’m not sure that I’ll be able to post from my computer after today. The regular delivery date to the Chapter Chatter forum is Saturday and I will do my best to hold myself to it "barring unforeseen circumstances!"
We're hitting the road again this morning. Thanks so much to all of you who've offerred prayers, good wishes, and expressed your loving concern for us on this trip and for Robbie's SUCCESSFUL surgery. Please keep them coming as we are planning to arrive home Monday. Staying with the relative tonight and tomorrow, leaving Denver Sunday morning, one night's stay in Kansas and then Toto, there's no place like home. Gimme those ruby slippers!
Much love to all..............'Night, Corinne................'Mornin', Ralph..............
