Gotta head to bed. Robbie hogged the computer for awhile. Since this is the first time he's been able to sit up since Monday, I wasn't going to get greedy! Will post more tomorrow.
Anyone notice that we're about to hit 100 pages? Guess I'll find out who the lucky 100 maven is tomorrow.
Sweet dreams, mavens...............'Night, Ralph....................Mornin', Corinne..............

Morning Mavens, hope all the ones suffering in their bodies and all the ones worrying will find some peace and solace during the night and that when you awake, it is to a better an easier day. Annika, your are brave. I cannot see myself having to butcher anything, it is why I turned to being so close to vegetarian. I would eat roots or grass before I have to do that. My father used to have a farm with turkeys, chickens, wild board and I've seet too many animals disapear when I was very little, made a profund impression on me. But as Karen said, we all are different and all part of this wonderful community and we can just learn together. Sweet dresms to all of you, talk to you latter. Corinne

HA! Am I a Maven or what?! We have to pick a topic to do a Research Paper on, and my preliminary topic was...seeds and extinction! I had to show my Boolean searches and show some of the thought processes that I was already taking in our class discussion online.
Guess what one of my class mates said...here is his response! I am just glowing right now!:
Great topic - truly a potential disaster in the making, certainly wasnt what we envisioned when we were going to feed the world was it? Do you think its appropriate for others to do complementary searches on your topic? I am torn as do not want to be presumptuous but I have always found it fun to search. Also find it interesting that coworkers and I can often find slightly different resources doing the same search.

Corinne, I haven't killed anything ever, not even a fish, so we shall see how brave I am. I just got permission to have some hens. I will look forward to their eggs, but I doubt that I could ever kill them. I will have to see what names fit them best. I name everything =)
Congratulations Alee, of COURSE you are a Maven =) You have every right to glow and be proud.

Congratulations Annika on being given the permission to keep hens..how nice. I know you'll enjoy your feathered friends..and reap the rewards they provide. Alee..that is neat that your fellow colleague wants to learn something along the same lines..how interesting. My opinion is let him/her join in...that means one more person that is getting educated for the good of seed saving, etc. One more voice to speak up for change..this is a good thing..right?

Good Morning/Evening dear Mavens, Alee, so good to hear from you. Congrats, you have intergrated us into your life, lol, meaning your're not just thinking about what we stand for when your'e here, but in other aspects of your life. It's kinda like learning another language. When you actually catch yourself thinking in that other language, you know you are "getting It." : ) Dawn I hope you are feeling better today. I maintain that there is nothing a good nights sleep and a cup of tea, not necessarily in that order, will help. Hi Tina , Corinne, Amy Grace(Hope to see you in Rosalia next week), : ) Karen that's great that Robbie feels well enough to play on the computor! ********* JUST A THOUGHT* Mavens I'm not too crazy about journaling, so I decided while I'm working on the badge that you have to journal, I'm going to go ahead and work on the other badge that has you journal at the same time. Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. If anyone is interested in doing this also, let me know and I'll get you the info. ********* Going to the hen house now, only have a few min before I have to go to work. Have a wonderful, fall day and I'll check in after I get back from the chiro.

Good evening Corinne. Good morning to everyone else. Tina: I emailed you my address. Let me know if you get it or not.
Annika: Congrats on the hens. You will enjoy them. I enjoyed mine, will get some more one day. I remember having to explain a guy from the city that you did not need a rooster in order to have eggs. This person was educated in the business world, but not so much in where his food came from. Sad huh?
It is raining here this morning, but we need it and it has cooled the temperature down somewhat. I am thankful for that.

Hi girls! Alee: YOU ROCK!
I have a windy post here. A lot has been happening behind the scenes here. Did anyone expect this thing to explode like it did? I for one, didn't, but am grateful, honored and dedicated to it none-the-less. Last night I had to do a lot of soul-searching and thinking. Not just about this, but my marriage, my daughter who lives so far away and my health. However pertaining to this I have had a little help coming up with a plan. See, I wake up and turn to the computer by 8-9am every morning. Next thing I know its almost dark and I'm still in the vortex. It has to stop. My plan is to let you ladies run the forum and if theres anything that needs henhouse attention I will take care of that. I guess that's what the Mother hen's purpose is anyways.... I never really knew since I am so new to this as well. Its not that I wont be posting here....... just a lot less. So I will be taking up residence in the main nextbox and purveying the coop. On a side note.... I took the etsy plunge after a disasterous website experience. So since I am not working, that is going to have to be my (hopeful) income. But I cannot sit here for 8-10 hours on end and not do anything productive here at the house/farm while my hubby works 2 jobs to feed me & the animals, and pay the bills. I recently contracted with a salon to sell my jewelry and have already made $200 so that's what I will be doing most of the time. Beading my little heart out! Okay with that said, I am going to post the Christmas Pick List again.
Numbers Left ARE......drum roll please....... 1-5-8-11- and maybe 14
As I said before, I will pick last. HAve a good day and congrats on 100 pages!
Much love!!!

Dawn- I can totaly relate. I have had to give myself a certain ammount of time in the morning for the computer and then sometimes a few "check in's" and that is it because there are things that must get done around here. My DH works 12 hours a day so I can stay home and get things done-so in my book they had better be done!!! Which is one of the reasons I don't do much posting.
Karen-I do think you will have a problem with Jack and your chickens to be. Both Jack Russells and Beagles are hunting dogs and the drive behind a Jack Russell can be obsessive. Both of my jacks have a fenced yard away from the chickens and each day go for a walk throught the property on leashes. My Abby would kill a chicken if given the chance. My Doodle Bug would just like to play with them. If Abby sets out to catch a mole I litterly have to pull her out of the hole she has dug or she will hunt it forever!
Everyone that has made seed request, I will be sending them out next week. I still need Marcy and Teresa to Email me their address so I can send them their seeds.
Have a great day!
Lillian

Teresa Sue, which other badge? I am not a strong journaler and I may want to do them both too. I hope that you start feeling better from the Chiro and are in less pain. I think we will all learn many things together. I'm pretty sure there will come a time when I will need to butcher a chicken or other type of poultry, so maybe we all will learn together.
Good Morning/Evening to all my Maven sisters. I would like to meet the bunch of you fine girls in Rosalia but I don't know if I'll be too busy that Saturday or not...would be fun though
Corinne, Amy Grace, Tina and Brenda.... Thank you for the congratulations on my soon to come hens!
Amy Grace, I think I have that same book! I was going to build a dehydrator too =) but I haven't got around to buying the stuff to make it.
Brenda...it is amazing what people don't know isn't it.
Anyway, on with morning chores :P

Dawn-
I can totally relate. I have not really read the last 20 pages here because I am in the midst of mid-terms so my computer time is limited to only about an hour and a half. I try to break that up during the day to give myself little rewards :)
One way I limit myself is by setting a timer. Once that time goes off, I wrap up my train of thought and close down the computer! That is what I am going to have to do today. I have a lot to get done!

Alee, what a fantastic outcome from your report! You are in the right place at the right time, girlfriend. Go get ¡¥em!
Annika, congratulations on the hens! I want chickens but with Jack currently in the picture and the massive expansion of our garden next year I¡¦m starting to think we may wait another year. I love good eggs though. Did not have good eggs this morning. We brought food with us on the trip and since we¡¦ve been cooped up (hah! Cooped up ¡V I just got that!) in the hotel room for two days, I was ready to check out the continental breakfast and get some food you could actually chew (we¡¦ve been eating a lot of soup). They had boiled eggs and I was so excited. Then I took my first bite. Oh my goodness ¡V what a difference! Beggars can¡¦t be choosers and I was starving but where was the flavor? Not in the egg, I can tell ya that.
TS, please let me know about the other badge too. I¡¦m thinking you¡¦re referring to the gratitude journal?
Dawn, I think you made a wise decision. The henhouse is going to be the heartbeat of the mavens and as you are the heart of this group, that¡¦s where you should be. It seems like this is becoming more of a chat area and a place to think through things with like-minded mavens.
Lillian, it looks like I will need to find another home for Jack then. A good one with kids that can run the energy out of him! He¡¦s an adorable dog, so loving. I think he¡¦s still pretty young so other than the stink factor, which we can take care of as long as we can hang on to him, he should find a good home soon.
Amy Grace, what is the book? I just found an old copy of Sane Living in a Mad World: A Guide to the Organic Way of Life by Robert Rodale, J.I Rodale¡¦s son, copyright 1972. I¡¦ve only read a little bit but it¡¦s so fascinating. I thought I¡¦d be reading more of it but I¡¦ve been working on someone¡¦s [ƒº] pillowcases. I also got Practical Farming and Gardening. The copyright page was missing but the price, printed smack-dab at the bottom of the front cover is $2. I haven¡¦t gotten to check it out at all as hubby is devouring it. He did see an illustration dated 1900 on one of the pages.
Setting a timer! Another great idea, Alee. FlyLady would approve, wouldn¡¦t she, TS? Actually, she¡¦d probably say, ¡§Why didn¡¦t you think of that, Karen? Haven¡¦t I taught you anything?¡¨ I¡¦ll let you all draw your own conclusions on that one¡K¡K¡K¡K
Brenda, got your e-mail. I¡¦m so excited! I¡¦ll get back to you soon. I need to think about what I like - dont' want to leave anything out. heh heh heh
God bless - Karen ~ Chickherder & Farmgirl Sister #311
P.S. Brenda, congrats on being the first to post on page 100!!!
P.P.S. Whatever font I used in Word to type this post, I ain't using that one agin! But thought I'd leave it here for your reading/laughing enjoyment. |

Wow, 100 pages, who would have EVER thought it, right~ I love that it has sparked (or rather caused a firestorm) such passion by so many knowledgable and talented women. What a joy!
Dawn ~ Our Mamma Hen ~ Have I told you publically how amazing I think you are? with everything you have going on, to do all you have done is beyond what a simple thank you can give. I find it to be such amazing leadership to "peel" yourself away from one aspect of the Maven's to give focused attendion somewhere else AND to find a balance between your life, your health, your family and your passions.. I think that is what GREAT leaders do... and I just know that some one will step up and keep eye on this thread while you do what you need to do. And for the record I support you 100000000%
Alee~ "you go girl" I hope you "dip into" all the research and sites and books that we have offered up here.. for your paper.. as sisters, it is sorta like "borrowing" shoes or a purse, or what have you. We set out to "spread the word" and I cannot think of a more brilliant way... I hope we all do the same, otherwise it like "preaching to the choir" right? The objective is to educate.. the Maven's has truly been an organically grown group.. that belongs to each of us.. so "time to harvest" girlfriend! Our own little CSA or information :).. I am really "proud" of you, you are doing an awesome job!
Annika, How are you feeling? You said you were a little down. The chickens alone should be a HUGE boost your happy bone~ right? One of the Prosserfarmgirls just got her hen hotel done and I will have to post pictures.. it is way to cute for words.... My dad in law tore down an old barn and I grabbed some of the old barn wood to make mine, and I am hoping to get that done soon too. Feel better, know that you are loved and appreciated.
TS I am still working on the certification program and will send it to you to look at when I am done to see what you want added.
Karen ~ What would I do without you?

Oh Karen, I know what you mean about commercial eggs, they just don't taste the same. I have to go pick up my hens still. My landlady has a flock and is going to let me pick out a couple or three for a little cash. Since there is only two of us here. I don't want too many. I'm not set up to sell the eggs.

I'M BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok - I'll pick number 1 for the Christmas exchange if it's still avail. Things got really crazy around here for a couple of days. I had Monday off and helped hubby with his lawn mowing business. Tuesday was an exhausting day at work, yesterday I had a superload escort. (really big truck, really big load *264000lbs)It went from central Indiana to the KY state line. Now I have to work Saturday for yesterday since that money comes from a different source. Tomorrow I am helping with school bus inspections in Anderson. Now for the fun part - I am going to be off work from the 19th thru the 26th. We aren't going anywhere until Tuesday. Then it only to the family property in southern Indiana. Hubby will go deer hunting and I will read read read read and ride my horse. If it isn't rainy, I might go geode hunting in the creek. I have heard they are there, but have yet to find any.
As for butchering your own animals - if you can great - if not find someone to do it for you. I still can't cut up a store bought chicken. That sound - it makes me sick to my stomach. Mom tried a million times to show me and I just can't do it. We don't have meat processor near us anymore so I have to buy mine in the store. I am going to try to only buy from Whole foods and stock up.
Dawn- how did the CT scan go - do you have a brain in there?
Now I have to go get ready for work - ugh
See ya'

Thank goodness I'm working on the newsletter and re-reading the posts.
Again, in the "if it'd been a snack" category, Dawn, that is so incredible about the bracelets! It's no wonder to me and I think the first time I read your post it was like "Duh! Of course they're selling!" But $200 - WOW! I can see you and your bracelets going the same way as FiddlersWife (don't have time to look up her name - my bad) and her feedsack purses. Adding it to my prayer list right now...........................done

Okay, I peeked in. Its the HM addiction. Rene, Hen hotels.... is there a building plan for that? I'd like to get my hands on one and see if I can build those and sell them at the hatchery. What a hoot. My boss will just roll her eyes like she did when I borought in 15 chicken saddles to sell!!! I think on my etsy I may make "cuter" saddles..... but for the hatchery, they have to be durable and serve a purpose. I wonder how much I could sell a hen hotel for...... I have sooooo much barn siding left over. OH! Creative Alert! Does anyone remebr all those windows I came into? Guess what they are gonna be? C'mon, guess..... nope.....nope........nope....... COLD FRAMES!!!!!!
