Dawn, hope you are feeling better soon.
Sounds like everyone is really doing well. I would like to do more, but I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

Lora: Right now I'd say gather as many seeds as possible, label and hold onto them. I think that should be our strategy over the winter. As well as reading the books.... I pinky swear I am going to library today.... Annika: did you post that list yet? Well, I am going to go and post mine....like I said before, I dont need them all, but if others are interested in what I have on my list, we can combine orders.... Just looked at the clock. Its 9am here. Who else is on?

Good morning mavens! How are you all today? I picked up my copy of AVM from the library and also a copy of Gardening with Heirloom Seeds by Lynn Coulter ( a very nice book).
Dawn: How are you feeling this morning? Better I hope! I was just telling my hubby that we needed to go and get a flu shot soon. Most times I squeak by without one, don't think I want to try this year though.
I hope you all have a blessed day. :)

I've been on a while, just reading through things and re-acquainting myself with everything...got the shower and other morning doo-dahs out of the way =) It's COLD here and I'm wrapped in my big fuzzy robe getting warm. Been dealing with family issues, but nothing too bad, just the same old doo-doo so was here/not here a lot yesterday. Now I've got the gift of gab and can't quit babbling...
I'm going to go post my bee plant list, this will help us choose plants to encourage the little guys to hang around and pollinate our heirlooms that need them. It is a big list!, use only what you feel you can use

Good morning, all! Mornin', Ralph - how're you doin' today?
I'm feeling much better and glad to be able to say it. No itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezes, etc. I rested up enough that I was awake at 2am. I worked a couple of Sudoku puzzles which usually puts me to sleep. It didn't so I continued reading AVM until the alarm went off at 4:30 for DH to go to work (he's also feeling up to snuff again). Of course by the time he left the second round of sleepies hit so I took advantage of it. Now I'm up at and at 'em.
Got a lot of trip prep today – as in getting the house in shape to go – so will be checking in off and on. Here’s a little story for you animal lovers.
Like Teresa Sue, I feel like we’re becoming fast friends so I love sharing parts of my life with you. If you have time read the following. (Corinne, you’ll enjoy it as it’s a dog rescue story.)The dog that was part of the perfect storm causing hubby's asthma attack has adopted us. He looks part Jack Russell and part Beagle - not a big dog. He was growling at Gus when DH took him for his morning walk Sunday so we thought he might be rabid and planned to call animal control when we got home from church. The dog had other plans and came out to greet us. Sweet little thing with loads of energy! He went with us to gather walnuts that afternoon and hung around us while we hulled and washed them. (That was the close contact contributing to the asthma issue.) I named him Bud in memory of DH’s first dog. Monday when I took Gus out, he and Bud met and now that I was trustworthy and Gus liked me, Bud decided Gus was okay and they are now good friends. They ran and jumped and played (while I was still holding Gus on the leash!) and had a grand time. So I put Gus on the tie-out that afternoon and it was so much fun to watch them playing together. I decided that Bud didn’t really fit him and since he likes to jump so much I named him Jack. Since he’s part Jack Russell that sealed the deal. Later hubby says, “Now we have a dog named after my dad!” I didn’t even realize that when I named the dog but yes, my father-in-law’s name is Jack – it’s his middle name but it’s what he goes by. And Gus is named after my dad – Gustav is his middle name. So, at least for now, we’ve been adopted by an outdoor cat AND an outdoor dog. I’m torn right now because Robbie brought up the point that it may be a problem come spring when we’re planning to get chickens. A friend of ours had a Jack Russell that would eat her chickens when it got out of the house. Hers were totally free range; ours will be fenced in but Jack can jump. He almost jumped through the open window of the car when I was sitting in it yesterday! I was originally thinking of finding a home for him with kids because he’d be a great family dog. But we’re getting really attached to him already (me, DH, Gus and even Leo – the indoor cats just want him to go away as they find his energy annoying, not that they’ve actually met nose to nose but they’re finicky). So for now, we have another dog. And he makes me smile. When he’s playing with Gus, he makes me laugh. End of episode one.
God bless - Karen ~ Chickherder & Farmgirl Sister #311
P.S. We're thinking someone dumped Jack and he got hit by a car. He has a bald spot above his right hip and walks a little lop-sided. And Dawn, since he's a dog, we won't have the surprise of finding out that Jack is really a Jacqueline! |

Karen~I love the dog story. Poor little Jack. I love the Encyclopedia of Country Living. It is on my to buy list. I have borrowed it from the library but that's a book you always want to have on hand.
We are busy with schoolwork here. This afternoon I am off to the library to pick up another book. I have so many on hold I don't know which one is ready to be picked up.
Dawn~I am glad to hear you are feeling a little better.

Hi Teresa Sue-
You can send the money via the paypal website even if you don't a paypal account. The paypal account for the mavens is mavens@awarmheart.com
Just go to www.paypal.com click "send money" and it will ask you to input the email address you want it to go. Then they will ask for either checking or CC information.

Dawn, I see your Storey’s Guide and raise you Country Wisdom & Know-How: Everything You Need to Know to Live Off the Land, 480 pages. I really tried to fight getting the Carla Emery book as I already have this one but it was either buy it or spend the next few weeks living at Borders until I got it read and/or Robbie would let me back in the house. I was looking at the Storey’s Guide yesterday too but it wasn’t as anecdotal and you know how I love a good anecdote. You’re ahead of me with the MJ books though – I only have the Ideabook.
TS, thanks for the vacation update. So glad you had a wonderful time. You so deserve it.
Brenda, I’m so glad to hear you like the Amy Coulter book. Mine is supposed to come in the mail today. I tried to order it from SSE but didn’t see it in their list so went the Amazon route. Went ahead and paid for shipping so I could take it with me on the trip.
I took some pictures this morning of the beautiful Stairway to Heaven in our backyard. It’s a flower in the sunflower family (helanthus – not sure if I’m spelling that right but it’s what my dad always called them. I thought that was the actual name until I discovered that all sunflowers are in that family). I’m hoping they’ll not get frosted while we’re gone and I’ll be able to collect the seed. They haven’t been around here for 50 years so they’re not heirloom that I know of. But they are beautiful when you get a bunch of them growing in a plot. We have a few here and there since the garden has been relatively unattended since my dad died but that’s about to change. Right, mavens?
Annika, we’re leaving Saturday for Colorado. This time we’re taking the lower route instead of going straight across Kansas so we’ll be covering territory we’ve never traveled together. And……….when I was taking pictures of the flowers, there were bees pollinating them! At least two different kinds. There was a third insect but I’m not sure what it was. Hope to post pictures in the future on my blog-to-be and maybe someone will know what it is.
Thanks to those who took/will take the time to read the Jack story. He’s a cutie! I get more fond of him every time I see him. And if you think I’m a sucker for him, DH is worse! Just need to figure out a way to keep him away from the chickens. We’re gonna need some really sturdy fencing!
Okay, back to housework…………

Happy Jack. He sure has found a nice home. Karen, aren't these rescued animals the sweetest things ? At the moment we have in the house our 2 cats, plus 3 kittens we are trying to socialize enough to have them taking quarters at the shelter. We had them neutered last week ( on the kitchen table, can you imagine... but we have been luchy enough to find a vet who does house calls) and now they live upstairs with our helping lady, Rana and they drive her crazy. Then when these are at the shelter waiting to be adopted, we have a couple more that will follow the same route as these. What we do not do for animals, when we can. Have a fantastic trip Karen and enjoy the new route. will be praying for a safe and happy trip. Corinne

Annika, not to worry (I hope). Robbie is a wonderful long distance driver - I handle the city driving and just give him a break on the interstate when needed. And I'm really hoping to be able to check in from time to time here as I made sure all the places we're staying have free hi-speed. Not having dial-up will be a wonderful vacation for me! Also, I ended up making a double batch of the peanut soup Monday night so we both had a heaping bowlful last night. I'm sure that's what kept us frpm getting our colds
Corinne, the kitchen table?????????? When in Kuwait........
Alee, good to see you yaking a break from studies to check in. Always glad to see your posts pop up.
Back to housework.......and Jack........

Dawn, here's my dad's remedy: one tsp baking soda in a glass of warm water. It will either calm your symtoms (especially queasy stomach) or make you throw it all up. Either way you end up feeling better. I only took it as a last resort because I hate the possibility of losing my cookies. There were a few times when I felt so bad I went for it and mostly things worked out in my favor - once or twice I lost it all but I did feel a lot better fast.
Hang in there - we'll hold down the fort. Didn't you say you had peppermint oil? Don't ingest it but smelling and/or mixing it with oil (olive, jojoba, whatever) and putting it on your stomach may help.

Dawn I hope you are feeling better soon. Very sorry to hear you are ill. Karen have a great trip to Colo. It is beautiful there. Do you have family there? Your new dog sounds pretty darn cute. I've taken in many, many animals from others who couldn't keep them. Corinne I had to laugh at your table top party. I used to have a good friend who was a vet and she neutered my male cat on our kitchen table. Hey, a Mavens gotta do what a Mavens gotta do. LOL Hi Tina Michelle, Annika, Amy Grace and all the other Mavens.

Mavens, I just got back from the library. The book that I had on hold is The Edible Heirloom Garden. It looks great. Does anyone else have this one. I can't wait to read it. I know that just by flipping through it they mention Seed Savers.
Dawn~I hope you are feeling better soon. Karen~I hope you enjoy your trip. Ruth

Mavens! I had an idea! Oh no, you are saying. hehe Anyway, in our hen house I think it would be a good idea to go to your profile and include your position with the HMs and your growing zone. The first will help keep everyone straight for all our new members and the second will help when we are swapping seed.

Hey, mavens, thanks for the good trip wishes but I'm not actually leaving until Saturday morning. I will be taking all of your kind thoughts with me though - literally, as I'm printing out the posts and putting them in a notebook to take along!
TS, it's so nice to see your posts out here again. You were missed. And we do have family in Denver - DH's aunt and uncle. Hubby actually is having outpatient surgery done on Monday and the specialist is in CO also. So we get to combine pain and pleasure! It isn't major surgery (being outpatient and all) but he will be off work for two weeks and it's medical leave so he didn't need to use any vacation. No worries - everything will be fine - just taking some preventative measures to prevent anything major in the future.
Yep, darn cute, that pretty well describes Jack. I put poor Gus on his tie-out earlier and when I looked out later I saw him laying in the shade. What I didn't know was that he got wrapped around the clothesline pole a couple of times. That's never been an issue but now that Jack's in the picture, I'm sure it's the result of a round of chase. Both dogs are fine and so am I. Gus in back in the house chillin' out.
