Morning Mavennnnnnsssss, I remembered I had a few minutes before I had to go to the cafe this morning(then the cemetery), anyway were you aware that before people feed grains in copious amounts to livestock that they fed them root vetgetables, carrots, turnip, beets, etc, and sugar beets, which they also called them mangles, I believe. Couldnt' help but throw that in this morning. It's getting chilly here, this week we are supposed to have 32 degrees and colder every night. When I get home from the cemetery I'm going to go out and pick every tomatoe and pepper so hopefully I'll have some seed to share with y'all. Have a great day and I'll talk to y'all later. Love ya,

Hey, Teresa Sue, in case you read this before you pick your tomatoes, I read on another post here to pull your tomatoes and hand them upside down to let the rest of the tomatoes ripen. If there's a freeze predicted here for next week we're going to do that before going on our trip. Hang on, I'm going to try to find that post.............
Found it - in the Garden Gate Forum / Mini greenhouses thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25595
And in case I haven't said it yet, WELCOME BACK, TS!!!!!

Dawn, you need Young Living's Thieves oil blend. We didn't get a cold or flu at all last season. Not saying the bugs didn't try but we boosted what we were doing and the effects lasted at the most 24 hours, usually much less, no urpping involved. Something to keep in mind if you get a lot of colds/flu.

P.S. Sorry, my bad, oh so bad, Ralph (appropriate name right now, unfortunately). I do hope this runs its course super fast and you're feeling much better soon. In the meantime, broth, lots of water and to bed with you, girl. Rest up and get better, my deere dear Dawn, we need you. |

In a very old french book, found this interesting remark about the age of the seeds we plant and how that determines next year yielding. Carrots of the first year do not give always the same variety the year after. Green cabbage, endives or chicoree are at their best when coming from last year seeds. Melons are at their best if you keep the seeds 2 or 3 years before planting. Corinne

Dawn~I hope you feel better soon. Teresa Sue~Nice to have you back. Annika~Thanks for sharing the gardening story.
We have had a busy morning. The kids had their annual physicals this morning~early!! We just got home a bit ago. It was busy and we had a couple of errands to run. We are trying to get some schoolwork done now.
I am still waiting for my SS catalog. I can't wait for it to arrive. I am enjoying the book we're reading. Ruth

Annika, this book is from the turn of last century. I will scan the pictures for you, they are just amazing. They explain all about seeds, variety after variety, with a ton of details on each sort. I will share all that I learn while reading. They also explain that we need to take off the whole head of flowers (carots or coriander for example) and not just grab the seeds. And there is a chance that we stay put for another 6 months instead of having to move next january, so have a little pray for us please. Corinne

HI gals: Feeling a tad bit better. Its always good when theres nothing left inside of you!! Been reading farmers Almanac and it predicts a very very cold winter for most of the states. Below average temps and lots of snow. Please act like squirrels and pack what you can away now... you western girls may be in for a rough ride!! I am really really gonna go to the library tomorrow and get AVM. Its like everyewhere I turn that book is right there. I just gotta get it. It was in this months Backyard Poultry Magazine as well. FYI: For those planning on coming to Spring Fling in May I am taking chick orders. You will only pay for the chicks and no shipping fee's. I will have them ready and boxed with a food packet for you to take back home with you.... I will list the chickens available closer to the end of January in the henhouse... They will be biddies so have a brooder ready! Okay.... I need to go lie down again. I'm dizzier than usual! Har har!! Peeking in the coop and then to bed.

Good afternoon, mavens - I am so sleepy.
Dawn, glad you're feeling better - as for the reason, well, a maven's gotta do what a maven's gotta do, even if she'd rather not have to!
Corinne, that book sounds like quite a find. Don’t you just love old books. And so much of the information is pertinent today. It’s so wonderful to get lost in them. And the pictures in those books – well, they don’t make them like that anymore – just beautiful, even if they’re in black and white. And more prayers coming here for a lengthened stay.
Ruth, sounds like you hit the ground running this morning. I didn’t get as early a start as you but have been on the treadmill today too. Hopefully we’ll both get a really good night’s sleep. I ordered my SSE catalog yesterday – the race is on to see which of us gets it first!
Hey, Dawn (again), I picked up the 2009 Farmers Almanac today. Is that the one you’re referring to or were you looking at 2008 (the one I can’t find at the moment)? Either way, planning on stocking up for the winter.
Also picked up another book today (yes, I am a bookaholic). This one is The Encyclopedia of Country Living. I guess I should be posting this in the henhouse so I’ll move over there. But let me just say it’s not only informative, big (922 pages) and full of useful information, it’s entertaining. That’s the teaser to get you to check it out in the book folder of the henhouse.
I think I’m fighting getting the cold Robbie didn’t come down with. Gotta boost the Thieves. And I’ve been thinking about that post I made this morning. When I’m feeling rushed/anxious/stressed/etc. I just blurt out what’s on my mind. So I just blurted out about Thieves like I was talking to Dawn and y’all weren’t around. It’s just that when I find something that works really well for me I want to tell everyone – kind like finding the mavens. No one else has a clue what I’m talking about either but I don’t care – I love you all, we’re doing really important stuff and want everyone to know about it.
Okay, in case you couldn’t tell I’m really really sleepy so heading to the henhouse now to blurb about my book and then to bed. And it's not even 6pm yet here.
God bless - Karen ~ Chickherder & Farmgirl Sister #311 |

I have the 2008 SSE , most of the things seem to still be in stock and I can hardly wait to order Sound like it might be a rough winter here and I'll need my money this winter to pay the cursed power bill!
Karen is that the book by Karla Emery? I've seen an older edition if it is and it is amazing how much information is in that book. And what on earth is the Thieves oil?
I've got the list of bee plants alphabetized and am willing to post it but it is really long HAHA! I am Annika the maker of really long lists!

Annika, that's the one! I'll have to post about it in the henhouse tomorrow though as I about fell asleep updating my bio.
Here's a quickie on Thieves: During the time of the bubonic plague in Europe there was a small band of robbers who were able to steal from people who died from the plague but they didn't come down with it. They were finally arrested and the king promised leniency if they would tell him how they were able to keep from getting the plague. It turns out that they were aromatherapists, spice traders and such so they had access to medicinal herbs. They were able to devise a blend that they put in a “beak” (they were covered head to foot and breathed through this beak) and it killed the germs before they could inhale them. (FYI: leniency was just a less painful death so they died in the end.)
Gary Young, founder of Young Living oils, heard of this story and based on some of the oils they used, came up with his own blend and called it Thieves. The first time I heard the name I thought “Who on earth would name a product Thieves and then expect people to buy it?” but after hearing the story it made sense. And it works. I can tell I’m coming down with the cold that was threatening Robbie (which he didn’t come down with by the way – he went to work today and came home still full of energy, thank goodness, as I have none). So I’ll take a couple of drops with agave nectar (I use that instead of honey – it has lower glycemic index – but honey, molasses, a piece of bread would work just as well) when I sign off here and couple drops on the bottom of my feet before bed and tomorrow I should be hunky-dory. Right now I have that burning-eyes-fever-coming-on-sneezy feeling.
Oh, yea, and I only take Young Living oils internally because they’re therapeutic grade. It freaked me out when the person that introduced me to them said she puts peppermint oil in her water. Then she said, “but I only do that with Young Living oils.” I thought, “Yea, right, you only say that ‘cause you sell them.” Then I learned about more about them from Dr. Stewart and that there really is a difference between therapeutic grade and other oils and what that means……………….
I know this isn’t technically an heirloom topic but it’s part of the greater health picture for me. I was thinking today about how many people I know whose health has been adversely affected by drugs and that’s one of the things that started me down the ‘natural’ path. Organics and heirloom seeds are a big part of it but not the whole picture for me. So that’s why I’m posting here instead just sending you an e-mail. I really need to get my blog going so I can post more about these things. I have the name. My brain just freezes when it I try to get the first post out there. Too much pressure I’m putting on myself, methinks.
Okay, I’ve had to prop my head up several times during this post so I really am off to bed now. Good night, mavens. Good night, Ralph. Good morning, Corinne.

Hi Mavens, Thanks to all of you who had a thought or two for me. I enjoy y'alls friendship so much. ---Dawn I got my bracelet today, I had had my mail put on hold while I was away as my dh always forgets to pick it up. Girls, I have to tell you the bracelet that Dawn made me is beautiful!!!! Thank you so much. It is worth at least three times what you are having me pay for it. ---I can't remember if I signed up for a paypal account through ebay or not, how would I find out? Just go to paypal.com, I guess, lol. I'll try that, if not I'll need an address to send my bracelet money to. ----Corinne that book sounds wonderful. I once had a chance to buy a really, really old herb book, it was quite large and the drawings in it were so beautiful. It would have taken my whole month's grocery money tho, and I figured my family wouldn't appreciate me spending the money on a book, but, boy howdy I surely did want to.(Sigh). ---I had a great time with my daughter, ate lots of great food, made her three sets of curtains, sat on the beach and watched the sun set over the Pacific Ocean as the waves rolled and thundered in. I will always be a mountain girl, but I will never forget that evening. I also liked Marineville, aka, Pendelton Marine Base. It was self contained, clean, tidy, and didn't have so many people as San Diego proper. I can see why so many Califs are moving up here. The traffic was horrible, it took forever to get anywhere. There's no place like home, there's no place like home....... ---I'm still waiting for my SSE catalog too, can't wait. ---Oh, Dawn thanks for the seeds too! They are the wildflowers, right? You need to get your AVM soon, cause we are starting the HMBC the 13th October. Okay, I know there is more I'm forgeting, but I'll have to remember it later. Goodnight or Goodmorning, lol
