Good morning, mavens! (It took me almost a full minute to type mavens correctly - fingers are still asleep, I guess.)
DH had a rough night suffering from the perfect asthma conditions storm. We spent the day gathering a bunch of walnuts that we hadn't discovered in previous ramblings. We don't have a lot but after getting the green hulls off we have almost half a bushel to crack for nuts. I'm pretty excited about it as I LOVE black walnuts. Hoping to have some for Christmas cookies and the rest for homemade ice cream next summer.
Walnut hunting was part one of the perfect storm for DH. Part two was a new dog in town that's apparently been dropped off, found Leo's (outdoor cat) food and decided to adopt us. Seems to be part beagle, part Jack Russell. Part three was forgetting to shut the bedroom window before we went to bed so it was bringing in allergens. So we didn't get much sleep last night, he's staying home and I'm late in checking in this morning. We've been going non-pharmaceutical in treating any illnesses, etc. for over a year so the emergency inhaler Rx had expired. We called the Dr. for a new Rx so we have it on hand for critical care situations like last night.
It was a bummer to discover that Bakers Creek was too far to travel to in a day but I really enjoyed spending the day picking up and hulling walnuts. Finding MaryJane has really been an eye-opening adventure for me, especially in discovering things about myself.
Amy Grace, it is so cool that your son would rather go to a movie with you than go to homecoming. And fill us in on the Christmas gifts unless the giftees are farmgirls and would be reading about it on the connection – then I don’t want you to spoil the surprise.
Dawn, glad you had a good time with DD and proud of you, girl, for going to the Autumn Festival on your own. I felt so sad for you when you didn’t go to the Country Living thing because you didn’t have anyone to go with. If you enjoy it, do it anyway. [This coming from an only child growing up in the country who had to learn to do most things on her own as there was no one else around.]
Alee, you have midterms this week, right? I’ll be saying an extra prayer that everything you study sticks and comes out just right on the tests. Dawn, when she graduates, she’ll still be Alee……….
Corinne, I’ll have a question for you about the granola bars when in the henhouse when I get done with this post. You’re probably in bed by now and I may just give it my best shot if I have time to make them today. I’m hoping to make some for our trip next week.
Annika, now you have a little “reading material!”
Okay, moving to the henhouse and will check back in this afternoon.

Wowzers! By the time I got my post out here there were 50 more to read. Well, maybe only 7 or 8 but it seemed like 50 at first glance.
Annika and Brenda, we put newspaper down topped with leaves in the garden last year for this year¡¦s vegetable crop. It was a small patch but it worked really well for smothering the weeds and getting the soil ready to work up. This year we¡¦re going to lasagna garden as much as possible. We¡¦re going to use cardboard instead of newspaper. I¡¦m going to hit Wal-Mart and other big stores for their used boxes. I may not shop there for much but that¡¦s one thing I appreciate them for. Annika, you might want to try cardboard instead of the landscape cloth ¡V just wet it down and cover it with compostable material. We have a friend that we¡¦re getting horse poop from and then I¡¦m hoping to collect leaves like crazy from our property and from friends. I even thought about going on Freecycle to ask for some. Of course all this will have to wait until we¡¦re back from Colorado.
And, Brenda, I¡¦m so glad to know I¡¦m not the only ¡§fuzzy¡¨ one this morning.
Ruth, saw your posts in the new thread and am so glad it¡¦s working for you. Yippee!
Good morning, Lillian. [ļ]
Dawn, you managed to do two posts and take a shower in the time I did one post. You are a wonder, woman! And a benefit of having DH home today, he made breakfast for us ¡V scrambled eggs with okra, zucchini and red bell peppers. Thought of you when I spied the okra. YUM!!!
Later, mavens..............

Hey thanks Karen, I'll do the cardboard this year, we have plenty of critter poo around here to cover it with. I'm trying to use as much of my front and back yard to make garden space as possible. The landlords have horses, llamas, goat and sheep, so plenty of manure to work with.
Dawn, I love the pics on your blog, you and your daughter make a pretty pair and the goat pic is just too cute! you have a pretty girl there, and they do grow up too fast, don't they?.
Alee, good luck with your studies, we'll all be here, I second that I'm glad you are still with us.
Good morning ladies (9:02 here) I hope everyone has a great day.

Annika, what's the status of your bathroom-turned-greenhouse? When I told my husband about it, his eyes lit up. We had an area set up for starting plants last year on a table in the basement. He'd put boards up around it but one of the cats still got in and ate the lettuce. So we put Gus' folded dog crate on top but she eventually found a way to get in and eat the sunflowers. The other starts were so disturbed by the commotion that they all gave up so we lost everything. The idea of setting up a "greenhouse" in the basement bathroom where we can close the door and keep them out would be fantastic. Of course a couple of them get in on rare occassions by walking on the duct work but that's an easy fix - at least I hope it is! Anyways, just wanted to see if you're going ahead with that project.

My Sweetie and I are going to go for it. We can keep the hoodlums (our cats) out and the starts safe for the 6 odd weeks we have to grow them. I am going to buy grow lights and shelves this winter...I hope the neighbors don't think we are growing anything illegal heh!
But it should be worth the investment, I'm buying some pretty rare tomato and pepper seeds and they need a constant temperature of about 80 degrees F.. and I have water right there to keep them hydrated. yipee!
I'm so glad you two like the peanut soup. I have loved it for decades!

Well, ladies~I'm back from grocery shopping. I went to three stores to get the best deals and still spent $300. This a monthly stock up shopping. Now I have to put it all away. I am not looking forward to that. Alee~I'll say a prayer for you too for your midterms. Dawn~I finally saw the pictures on your blog. She is so beautiful. It was nice to see a picture of you, too. I can put a face with the name now. Ruth

Wow Annika... never read you so animated before!! I know what to load you up on when I come out west.... hee hee! I'm a little spry myself today.... I have been a cleaning fiend. I shampoo'd carpets, and burned trash, gave a dog a bath and made laundry soap. I'm gonna reward myself with a bath.... its been a long time since I did that! Okay, that sooooo came out wrong... I do shower daily, but I never take time to draw bath.... Okay, girls. I'm done for the night.... time for me to sign off.....
MORNING CORRINE!

Robbie update: apparently there was one more aspect to the perfect storm – he’s also coming down with a cold. However, I am happy to report we finally were able to get everyone and everything connected so that he now has the asthma medicine and is feeling 1000% better and hopefully will make it in to work tomorrow. Still running a little fever so we’ll see how the night goes but I’m encouraged.
Welcome back, TS! Rest up and then get ready to share your adventures. I’m looking forward to hearing all about your trip.
Soup’s on. Laundry’s in process. Need to get the trash out for pick up tomorrow. Doing major pre-trip errand run tomorrow so need to get list finalized. Then to bed and a good night’s sleep.
Sweet dreams, everyone. Night, Ralph.

Good - to hear everyone's (or almost everyone) "voice" again, it was kind of quiet. Here is a garden story for you - we bought our house about 4 years ago and we have 3/4 of an acre right in town. The back 1/3 of the property was used as a horse corral a few years before we bought it. When we moved in it was all thistles, we have rototilled every spring and had varying degrees of successful garden - the second year was great. The last two years however, I have run out of time to really do the garden well, except for rototilling. Now at the end of the season, the garden is filled with 7 foot tall weeds that you cannot pull out (I kind of gave up in June or so). This is a totally different set of weeds than used to be here. I was reading a book called Eat More Dirt by Ellen Sandbeck and she says that there are seeds that can stay dormant in soil for years that will only sprout when something traumatic like a mudslide happens - the resulting weeds are specifically adapted to control erosion - definitely needed after mudslides, unfortunately I seem to have triggered these weeds by rototilling. Aaackk - next year I am going to try to dig by hand when the ground is soft and to do lasagna gardening too. Weird hunh? You all talking about rototilling started me thinking about all that.... It is really interesting to me how many adaptations nature has for different events.... Okay, moving on Talk to y'all soon Amy Grace
