Dawn, you got it, girl! And anyone else that would like seed from Bakers Creek, let me know. I'm just going to see what they have (and I'm sure that they even are selling seed on site) and then let Amy Grace and Marcy know so they can start/add it to the seed-swapping list. Also, would the two of you please send me a little blurb on maven seed-swapping for the newsletter? Not much, a short paragraph is fine, just to let people know the how-to's of swappin' seeds.
Enjoy your day, mavens! I'm outta here til this evening.

Hey, Annika! We're going mostly to look tomorrow but I'm sure I'll get some seeds. I want to find some really interesting things to share with the mavens. We're planning to go back in December when it's Christmas-y so keep that in mind. I definitely want to look for “Sleeping with a Sunflower” that Corinne mentioned. I need the book on companion planting too but my heart wants the sunflower book.
FYI: The Missouri Gardener’s Companion is full of lots of useful information for gardeners everywhere. I was skimming it in the car today (Robbie was driving!) so I didn’t take any notes. But I’ll be diving into it this week and will share as I read. I thought I found a bit of information about bees in that book or another one I had along, but I can’t find it now. I’ll be on the lookout for that too as I read.
Have a good night and a relaxing Sunday everyone. I’ll check back in Monday morning.
Good night, Sam (QMD)…………or am I Sam and you’re Ralph?………

Karen, I know what you mean; I am a book Marker as well. Love to highlight so I end up buying, too. I just didn't want gals thinking that they couldn’t participate unless they bought a ton of books. While I certainly support... the "supporting of writers and authors", I also feel like we can all "play" and if we need to borrow books then there is no shame in that... But I know what you mean, If you're a marker then you're a marker...best be buying!
I had a great visit with the gal at our extension office and she shared that so much of what we are about, the extension offices have people just as dedicated and that "they" are always a great resource. If you’re looking for farmgirls for your local chapter also talk to the extension office as they can hook you up with others in your area looking for "support".

Hi, Rene, what a surprise to find your post as I thought you were "offline" until after Iowa. I'm learning there's a whole other world of books at the library (not as limited in our neighboring small town as I thought it would be) but you're right - and I'm a market first class. I was one of those people who sold their books back at the end of college semester all highlighted with all the important parts marked for the next owner. Nothing like a hand-me-down marked-up book to start the new semester with! Maybe that's why I didn't get as much money back as my friends did, eh?
Crumbs, crumbs, crumbs.......crumbs flying all over the room. I just signed on to get directions to BakersVille and guess what? There's an actual Bakersville, Missouri, 2-1/2 hours from here which is where I thought Bakers Creek Seeds was located. But no, they are almost 4 hours from here and I don't know where the name Bakersville comes from but it isn't the name of the town apparently. It isn't the owners last name either (that's Gettle). So we're not going to be able to make the trip tomorrow. It's too much for a one-day trip with DH going to work the next day. So we're going to plan ahead for a November or December trip (I'm hoping December as it's Christmas-time). Sorry, Dawn, no seeds. You'll just have to take the cold hard cash or wait til December...........
Okay, mavens, this sign off is for real...............chat with you Monday. And Rene, have a wonderful time in Iowa. Are you going to be in or near Koekuk by any chance? My parents and I vacationed there when I was in 4th grade. Yes, that was our actual destination. I am see-wee-us! All I remember was the motel room but apparently there's a very nice park with a statue of Chief Keokuk.

Hello!Ladies,
I tried to post earlier but cyber space ate my post. I have left some replies to the Hen House threads in the thread here. I have my book and started reading it for the book discussion. We have had a busy weekend~out to lunch with my brother in law, shopping, visiting my parents, church today. I borrowed two Mother Earth News and Natural Selection magazines from the library and have been reading those. I love them. I think I am going to subscribe to Mother Earth News. Ruth

HI GIRLS!
Boy howdy, did I ever miss ya'll! Homecoming was great. DD's hair would NOT stay curled... so she ended up wearing it down. I had it all piled on top of her head with these curls.... it was so pretty, but the curls wouldnt stay.... so down it came. Her dress was very neat too. The Homecoming Theme was "A NIGHT IN PARIS". COrrine i could'veused soem help from you! Her dress had crinolin (sp)underneath that gave it a 'can can' feel. Her shoes had fillies on them too.... Oh, she is just growing up so fast.
Eveyone backed out on me for the Autumn Festival Today.... so I went by myself. It was a beautiful day and I walked away with a neat Santa Claus and a delicious apple fritter. I sure hope that everyone else had a good wknd too.....
Karen, thats okay about the seed. We'll get an order together soon I'm sure. Does anyone else want to order in January? that way we could get our seed lists together.
I am really bummed about the sugar beets. If I or anyone else runs across some REAL seeds. Grab them and sell/trade or share.
I just had to check in a little today, I will be on tomorrow after chores as usual!

Dawn - glad to hear homecoming was fun. My son, who is almost 16, is sort of the token nonconformist in our small town and didn't want to go to homecoming so he and I went to a movie. It is nice that he still wants to hang out with me sometimes.... I will be wanting to order seeds in January for sure, I have made a whole list from the SSE catalog but I'm not sure if they sell the same seeds year to year, I think they rotate their crops to make sure that all of the seeds they have stay in "production" It was a mellow day here in Rosalia - did some cleaning and some knitting, starting on Christmas gifts!! Talk to y'all soon Amy Grace

Alee, its all worth it in the end. Hang in there. How much longer do you have? And what will you be when you graduate?
Amy: I'm glad your son and you can spend time together. DD is a social queen, she is constantly surrounded by or talking to friends... no Mommy time anymore.... I will hopefully gets pics up tomorrow on my blog. There was a moment when she and Durango (goat) were almost kissing! So cute. Also, a barncat jumped up on a bench and would not vacate for pics, so he is in most of them.... hee hee!

Dawn, crinoline dresses are just lovely. I am sure your DD had a lot of fun. Curly hair is tricky, they never behave the way we want them too. I will order seeds separately, mostly from France and Canada, but we can make and post our lists and see where we can help. G'Night to all of you. corinne

I'm about to start on my list of Butterfly/bee/hummingbird plants for everyone interested and then a bunch of house work sometime today...I haven't trained it to do its self yet I'm trying to get my land lord to bring me down the rototiller so I can till under the weeds and smother the devils with landscaping cloth. I'm not using any herbicides any more. It is raining fit to drown ducks here and I'm glad for the roof over head and I'm still running (ok hobbling...) around with a busted ankle in my wretched foot brace thingy with a plastic bag tied around it doing things out in it. Yuck, and I thought that dogs tracked in a lot of mud!
I saw your herbal crafts post in the hen house and think I will try to make some pomanders (sp?) The apple mush things.

Good morning Annika. :) Good morning Dawn. :)
Dawn: I received my "spa" package. Thank you so very much.My skin is loving that tomato soap!! Also, thank you for the other special gifties that you included as well. I am feeling so special and pampered right now.
I had a another surprise yesterday. A friend from church gifted me with 3lbs. of organic spelt flour. Yum!! I am make homemade pumpkin muffins with it, but I really need to learn how to bake bread with it.
Do any of you plant by the phases of the moon? My dad does and I would like to try it too as he has very good success with it and so did his daddy. I am thinking of buying some buckwheat seed to plant as a cover crop and then till it under to improve my soil. Do y'all use cover crops? I am also thinking about maybe planting clover in between my garden rows to help keep weeds down and to provide food for the bees and nitrogen for the plants. Mulching with newspaper and straw in between plants. What do you all do for weed control?

Oh wonderful... I am posting without my coffee this morning and my brain is still to fuzzy to think. Ugh! My brain is saying to my fingers type this, but my fingers aren't listening and my posts are full of errors. I am sorry about that. Must put coffee on the grocery list.

HI sweetie! I am really glad that the tomato soap likes your skin. Your not too dry now are you?
I do not use a cover crop. or I should say I havent but am thinking maybe I should. My pumpkins did not do well this year and that may be the reason... I refer to the Farmers Almanac a lot.... you can also go to their website and sign up for a neat newsletter. www.farmersalmanac.com. I have found a wealth of information there...
Okay, I have GOT to hit the shower.... yuck. I stink....

Good morning, mavens!!
I have been running around this morning. I had laundry to do and I wanted to clean the refrigerator before I go grocery shopping this afternoon. OK, I didn't really want to clean it~I had to clean it. YUCK!!
Dawn~It sounds like you had a wonderful time. I am heading over to your blog soon to take a look at your pictures. I wish I could have gone to the autumn festival with you. We have one coming up in our area this weekend and I can't wait. I left you a comment in the Henhouse connection here.
Amy Grace~How awesome that your son still likes to hang out with you.
Alee~I hope you have been able to come out of the depths of homework land. My sister is a single mom of two boys and she is working towards a Masters in Speech Therapy. She is always in the depths of homework land.
Annika~When you find a way to train housework to do itself please pass on the secret. We would all like to know.
I am heading to the henhouse now to catch up on posts. Ruth

Hi Mavens-I have been lurking but not posting. Everyone has been so busy here! My goal is to get all of the house work done today and then tomorrow morning I can wander into the hen house and catch up on everything there. I wanted to comment about the clover for the honey bees- when my DH mows the yard in the summertime he goes around the patches of clover we have and leave it for the honeybees and the last 2 years we have had more honeybees than usual. We feel we are doing something good for the honeybee population.
Dawn- My pumpkin crop was horrid this year too-it was the weird summer we had so don't beat yourself up about it.
Ok-I must get to work now!!! I will be peeking in off and on, everyone have a great day.
