Corinne, I am so intrigued by you being in Kuwait, and would love to hear more about that, and life there and all. I have probably shared that I have 4 boys two of which are in the Military, Lucas is in the coast Guard and Thomas in the Marine Corp. Thomas is heading to Afghanistan in Feb.
I also wanted to remind you all that I will be gone all next week so dont think I "bailed" I am just in Iowa. I will check in on Monday morning and then, be gone through Sat night. I reckon come Sunday I will be reading 50 pages of this thread that I missed while I was gone :)....

Corrine, whew! good to know you're not easily scare-able! Happy sewing - let us know how it all turns out.
Rene, have a blast in Iowa! But then I have a feeling you have a blast wherever you go, you wild maven
Mavens, it looks like our trip to Bakers Creek Sunday is 98% going to happen. If you would like me to pick up some seeds for you while I'm there, send me an e-mail. Not sure if that's possible or what they'll have but I'm hoping for the best and want to be prepared.
Off to run errands. Later............

Speaking of blackberries and brambles and other stickery things...I'm trying to start a hedgerow. I think I've mentioned this to death in other posts, but I've started with 60 rugosa roses and am going to try to plant some wild apple trees and other fruit and nut/seed bearing shrubs and small trees to give shelter to the birds and food for them and the bees. I think I'll go out and see if I can gather up some wild plum pits and see if I can get them to sprout. With all of the heirlooms, and especially the ornamentals, I've noticed a lot of bee plants, so in amongst my carrots and peppers I'm going to grow them to encourage the poor bees if at all possible.
I was wondering if other had interest in bird/bee/hummingbird garden plants? if so I will go through my heirloom books and see what I can find and make a list. This may take a while as I am getting my house and yard ready for autumn/winter and it is all a royal mess right now.
BTW, there is a nice but older book by Jo Ann Gardner "The Heirloom garden" that I found on Amazon and am enjoying reading about the old flowers...you might look for it at your library and see if it is something you'd want to buy...I like it, even though there are newer books out there.

Annika, I sure am. I have been reading about the Bee's and am trying to plant as many bee friendly things as I can and find that I really like planting some flowers as row dividers between my heirloom veggies.... If others are interested in planting some and want more information they can check out the info at www.burtsbee.com someone more knowledgeable then me on the topic may have some hints on Companion planting.

Thanks Rene! I need to pick up some companion planting books, but I'd be glad for any advice I could get. I just want to help, especially the bees. We need them and they need us too now. Besides this way you get that nice cottage garden look with everything planted together. Or if you prefer a bee garden all to it's self that would be lovely too. Just thought I'd bring up the subject since we are planting open pollinated varieties to some extent and we need our bees and other pollinators to be happy and healthy.

Hi dear Mavens from sunny, a bit humid San Diego. I wore my daughter out shopping, she's taking a nap, so I thought I'd check in with y'all. Her husband is a career Marine and they live at Camp Pendelton Marine Base. We went out for lunch after she picked me up from the airport, down by the ocean and I had some scallops and shrimp alfredo, to die for. Today we went to a tea shop, had high tea and mmmmmmmmm good. Then we went down to the touristy old town of San Diego and I picked up a couple of things. Tomarrow we are going to Elenor Burn's quilt shop(Quilt in a Day) and then hopefully I can find a nice teacup for my collection. We're going to go to the beach for a bit and then we're going to make her some curtains for her dining room and the laundry room. I'm enjoying being here, such a different life style. The vegetation is so sumptous, even if it is the dry time of the year. Palm trees, eucaleptious(sp?)trees, some trees that their bark looks like camoflouge, I call them the official USMC camo trees, lol. Flowering trees and bushes of all kinds, so many plants I haven't a clue what they are, but so interesting. Y'all never guess what I saw at the Marine commissary? One of those french rouge l'something or other pumkins! I HAVE to have some of that seed. -----Rene, I can't wait to see the curriculum. -----I'm interested in the hummingbird and bee attracting plants too. Well, I'm going to clear out my email and check the henhouse, maybe by then my daughter will be up, we're going out for some fabu Mexican food. I swear, I'll be ten pounds heavier when I get back!lol

I've spoken with a professor of entymology at the University of Florida(Dr. Jamie Ellis) in regards to the best plants to grow for honeybees/native pollinators in different areas..and he said the best thing to plant is wild flowers/native flowers for your area.I will definitely be growing a wild cottage garden again..sowing with wild flowers. I also encourage the planting of lantanas as these are attractive to both bees and hummingbirds. Pentas, passion vine, cypress vine, cosmos, gloriosa daisy, coreopsis to name a few.

TS, Glad you checked in, please thank your son in law and daughter for their sacrifices. I have a marine son as well and I suppose that only those of us that have fire fighters, police officers, EMT's, soldiers and the like know the day in and day stressed of those kinds of jobs so I send my heart felt thanks.
It will be a few weeks for the curriculum as I will be gone all week next week and then I will need to pass it all through the farm, but it is coming. I would encourage anyone that is "waiting" to go through the sisterhood manual and Journal, Journal, Journal....
A great place to start is the EACH OTHER badges as much of that will be included in the curriculum. Also; FARM KITCHEN’S “ know your food”, “Bustin' out”, “self- sufficiency”, and "get it together". GARDEN GATE (all)... MAKE IT EASY - check out "in the garden", and make it... and in CLEAN UP - "going Green"
Under Garden Gate ~ each of us should really be Journaling and documenting "gaining ground" and "Heirlooms forever".
There will be additional things in the Curriculum that come from the Mavens thread and hen house (required reading etc)... But writing down the above and applying for those badges is a GREAT first step.

Also, instead of buying a lot of books please check your local extension offices first. Like Tina I find that many of the local "experts" are willing to share their knowledge.

Count me in on the hummie birds, flutter-bys and bee garden plants. I just adore hummies (that is what I call them anyways). Flutterbys hold a special place in my heart as well. Nothing like burying a beloved pet and having a sweet flutterby flying low right over the top to pay last respects. The bees are hard working and deserve the best plants to help them do their jobs. I would love a list of plants for these sweeties. :)

Ruth - thanks for the heads up on the Blackberry farm article - I knew there was a good reason for keeping 5 years worth of Country Living stacked around the house. I just got a book called Heirloom Vegetables today - it's an older one but looks to have some good info, this will keep me happy tonight. Work troubles are on hold but not resolved - I have a teaching certificate but decided I don't want to teach middle school or high school while my son is in those years, well here I am managing a bakery department in a grocery store and I swear I am dealing with most of the same issues that I did when I was student teaching in middle school, and these women are all older than me (I'm 38 just for reference) this is ridiculous. Okay - vent is over, it's just nice to talk to some nice friendly women sometimes. Teresa Sue - have fun in San Diego Tina Michelle (and other friends of bees) there is a section in the Seed Savers catalog that offers prairie flowers, that would work for the bees, although now that I think about it there isn't much prairie down there in Florida. I am very concerned about the honey bee situation, people just don't realize how much we depend on them. I guess that is the next thing for Monsanto - self-pollinating seed, hope I didn't just start a new huge evil trend Annika - I love the hedgerow idea - I have read some about them in I think it was one of Gene Logsdon's books. How much land do you have to work with? Talk to y'all soon Hugs and thanks for being wonderful people, Amy Grace

I'll work up a list of Bee/Hummer/Flutter-by plants for us to work with =) Thanks for the interest. Brenda, I love the hummies too! I'll get that list together.
The extension folk are pretty ok people, Rene, you are right, and I will check with them on various things. WSU has a LOT of material under publications that are low cost. They also have a lot of info for free on waterwise gardening, which helps. Also the Idaho Native Plant Society has some information on their website on plants that grow in this area. There is s lot of information available out there.
Teresa Sue, I hope that you have lots of good times. =)
Everyone have a great weekend and pop in and say hi when you aren't too busy.
Amy Grace, I live on someone elses property for the time being and I have about an acre to work with, so it is a small hedgerow =) but you do what you can. I'm always surprised what you can do with just a small piece of land.
Hugs to all!

Morning Mavens. Thanks for the support and encouragement, you are very kind. Annila, special thanks for the kind words. I foud a few books about companion planting. Baker Creek sells "Roses love garlic" by :ouise Riotte, but she also wrote "Sleeping with a Sunflower: A Treasury of Old-Time Gardening Lore". Cannot resit to copy what they say about this one.
< Arranged month by month, this book is packed with pure gardening folk wisdom: planting by the moon, fishing when and where the bass will bite, and more. A treasured gift for anyone interested in the forgotten lore of gardening.
January ~ A time for dreaming by the fire...and planning your garden
February ~ Look to the sky for signs of the gardening season
March ~ Start an asparagus bed...but take time to go fishing
April ~ Go after the weeds now for a better garden later
May ~ Spring has sprung...and so has your garden
June ~ Lettuce, green onions, peas...enjoy the early fruits of your labor
July ~ The vegetables you plant now will grow juicy and succulent
August ~ Corn relish, Indian pudding...and more delicious summer recipes
September ~ Harvest your top crops and prepare for the County Fair
October ~ Time to can and preserve your fruits for winter
November ~ Natural ways to keep colds away
December ~ Holiday treasures from your garden >
Could be what the Mavens are already doing. To all the Mavens going some where today : please be careful and drive peacefully. To all the Mavens staying at home, canning, gardening, ckking, cleaning.... have fun and do a bit of happy dance. To all of you, sweet dreams. Rene, will explain latter what we do in Kuwait, my husband is not in the army, he works in oil fields and we go all around the world. I will add your boys in our prayers. Hugs, Corinne

Annika, it is going well. We had a couple of workshops, last week it was gift bags, the week before stuffed animals. I still have a few aprons to make and some runners, am finishing off the Christmas ornaments. And then the adm. part, labelling, putting the adds out, this kind of things. Watch out for the Mud Hen FQ exchange, you never know what might come along mere fat quaters... Sweet dreams to you, thanks for asking about the bazaar. I've ordered the "edible french garden", will tell you all about it when I get it. Big hugs, Corinne

Good morning, everyone! Last night I checked in and read the posts. I got such a good feeling from the sharing, both gardening and general/personal, that I let the warm feelings sink in and trotted off to bed. Had the best night's sleep I've had for awhile. I think it's because of the depth of caring here, especially about each other. It's a wonder, ain't it?
Corinne, "Sleeping with a Sunflower" sounds lika wonderful book. I love gardening books that organize by the seasons. 'A time for dreaming by the fire...and planning your garden' - doesn't that just sound wonderful?
I bought a few books last night at Borders. I'll be blurbing about them in henhouse. Rene, I'm just a bookbuyer at heart because I mark them up. Can't do that with a borrowed one! Although I am borrowing more just to see if it's worth the price of purchasing or if there's just a couple of ideas in the book to take away.
To all bee/flutter-by/hummie lovers, I one too. Didn't have many bees or flutter-bys in the garden this year but I so enjoyed the ones that were there. Of course there wasn't much there to attract them this go round. Eventually my little herb/flower garden will be strictly cottage-y flowers but not for a couple of years. Tina, I'm familiar with most of the flowers you listed but not the pentas or passion vine so I'm looking forward to checking those out.
Amy Gracie, hang in there. Sending supportive vibes your way. Enjoy the weekend away from the fray. Or do you go in then too? Shoot, enjoy the weekend either way! We'll be rooting for you from the sidelines.
Off to post about my books and get to working on the house.
BTW: Did y'all notice we're over 1000 posts?

HI gang! It seems the only time I have to pop in and say hello anymore is when I'm at work.... however, I just received another lay off so I will not be working on Mondays anymore.... Its only a matter of time before they take away my Friday and Saturday.... Well then I guess thats alright too because I'll have an extra day to do chores and then i can post away!
I am very interested in a hummie/bee/flower garden. I had a LOT more bees this year than i did last year.... partly I think because of the flowers that I planted along the rock wall (see harvest blog). NOw that the house is resided and I can get to work on my "outpost patio" I will make a point to have hummie feeders and such. I'm also installing hog paneling on one side of the patio for privacy and to grow something climbing and vining on! Since I cant have a claw foot tub on the patio (hollow underneath) I'm looking for a galvanized water trough for my bath!
Corrine: I too like gardeing by the month. I already herb garden by the month and have some great books that have become my stand-bys. Anyone interested in what they have to say? I can post it in the henhhouse....
How is everyone doing? I've been talking to Lora and Karen via phone, but feel like I havent talked to ANYONE here for the longest time. Things are starting to slow down for me so I can give you a little more of me....
All of you are so very special to me. Flower packets are going out this week.... fun fun! It will look funny as I snip off flower heads and stick them in a brown paper bag and let them dry. What you get is seed, petals and whatnot. If anything, its kinda pretty! I've also included a couple surprises whether it be a recipe or a smellie....
Love ya! MUAH!
