ah o.k. I figured out what in the dickens I collected today..ha. I collected seed from Galphimia gracilis(Thryallis: Shower of Gold) today... as well as some Pineappple Sage and have to wait for the garlic chive seed heads to dry out now. Will spread them on a paper towel for them to finish drying and will collect seed.I don't know how many packets of which I'll have available as I need to collect more pineapple sage and more of the Thyrallis..but when I get more collected I'll start packing them into little envelopes and offer a few.I know most of these are flowers, but the garlic chives are not only ornamental, but edible as well..and the pineapple sage is also used in teas and so forth...the thryallis is just a pretty shrub. ---------- And the littlest kiddos helped me to start taking up our left over flagstone path from the cottage garden...ha..I see that you get a merit badge for having laid a stone path, but not for taking one up..ha (taking the stones up to use the stone at a new place)...haha..but isn't that about how it goes for me..I had already completed that sort of task as well as a few others on the merit badge system and here I am undoing a few of the tasks as I work towards getting the house, yard in order. So funny... but such is life. The kids were collecting rocks so I told them..hey..let's go collect those ones...as they needed stacked up anyhow..sneaky mom that I am they fell for it. We also stacked up my really cute round river rocks that I am saving for a new garden too. --------------------

Sheesh - don't sign on for 24 hours and look what happens. I know how y'all are feeling because I feel that way every time I sign on and read the days happenings. Dawn - I know this has been "done to death" but you are a great leader because you are so inclusive and not attached to being the leader - what is that quote about the only people sane enough to be in office are too sane to run for office?:D Anyhow, you bring great energy to our group - also if you find a Looney Tunes DVD will you please tell me where you got it - I have been feeling an uncontrollable LT craving lately. Everyone else I want to say how much I admire your passion and energy - I think the dust is settling and we can all find our niche. Mine is really just wanting to grow heirloom/organic and in my own small way to educate others, eventually maybe as a small farmer, who knows..... Okay, off to the henhouse before bedtime -
Oh yeah - I took a soapmaking class tonight and last night - what fun!! Now I have a bunch more homemade christmas presents. My mom took it with me and used lavender from plants from her garden. Very cool So long, farewell, auf wiedersein(sp?), goodnight.... Amy Grace

OK TS, I am plugging right along on the Farmgirl U Certificate program. I will be gone to IOWA all next week, but will post it in the hen house when I get back. Much of it is things we are already doing for our Sisterhood badges, plus some other... So make sure you are "applying for" your badges.
I love everyone’s passion~ IN the very beginning I suggested that everyone get a journal and write down your OWN goals ~ some will have HUGE plans and others smaller... whatever the pace you choose is "PERFECT" for you. Every little baby step is still closer then we were yesterday. Some peoples contribution will be more then others and that is OK too.........Reading back through the thread tonight I was so impressed by how everyone was able to take a step back and breathe and come back out "ready to roll the sleeves up again".. We are a very diverse group and everyone’s strengths are needed in what ever measure we get them in........Great Job Mavens~
TS thanks for pointing out to Annika (and us), that just a few weeks ago she "set out" to make a difference in the world and "verbalized it" on the thread "if I were strong enough" and here she is "doing it"....I am always amazed by the power in words....We all have greatness in us, sometimes it is just us being willing to speak it and then live it. I hope that each of us are journaling our personal adventures as we go through this as it will be so much fun to look back in July to where we started and how far we have all come. Even documenting the bumps and that we somehow got over them....

HI girls!
How are we this morning? It is BEEE-U-TI-Ful here in Ohio this morning. I am up and at'em! I feel really good today. No hurts, no headaches, no dizzy's... well not the kind I've been having! **********************************************************
So what are we gonna do today huh? ***************************************************
I have been reading my Heirloom Magazine that I got suckered into buying at TSC for TEN DOLLARS! It is sooo good. I willprobably post more about it on the blog today. I think if you subscribe to Hobby Farms Magazine, you can get all teh extra's that they send out like this one and Hobby Farms Home...that one is my absolute favorite. **********************************************************
I found another recipe today that I will post in henhouse. How about Lemon Lavender Cookies? I think I will make them for the Spring Fling. Very spring-y dontcha think? ************************************************************** Rene' was talking about goals and I think I've mentioned this before, but I am gonna say it again. I am a very reactive person. Sometimes I have to step back and be more 'proactive'. I am not out to stop the Monsanto's of the world (I'd really LIKE to...) but I want to educate and introduce heirlooms to others in turn so that they will cultivate and harvest their OWN seed for future use. I am a big believer in supply and demand. If more and more people are educated and informed about heirloom varieties, then that's less people buying GE seed. I really had to re-think and re-design my goals yesterday. Again, I was getting soooo caught up in "Saving the World from Franken-Seed". Not saying that we cant do it, but how do you eat an elephant.................? One bit at a time! ******************************************************** Okay, I am off to check in with the rest of the world.... have fun!

Hi Dawn!
Sorry I have been busy today. I did do some work in gathering info into a list over at the Henhouse and then I had to go to college campus today.
Found out that my campus is headquarters for "Native Seeders". They have developed a way to harvest seeds on the industrial scale from grass type plants without having to cut the whole plant down. Enough of the seeds fall to the ground at harvest that the field is naturally re-seeded and the majority of the plant is left standing! How cool is that! I am going to go talk to the others in that department as one of them might have some good contacts in heirloom seeds!

I looked up the meaning of "Heirloom" and it made me think a lot on what we are doing. "Heir" one who inherits and "loom" a tool or implement. With reviving heirloom varieties we are inheriting not only the wisdom of the past, but the tools to craft a new future. We are inheriting tools of change. The seeds that we save and plant are our ties to those who came before us and our tools for bringing change, no matter how small at first, to our future. I believe in change. I believe in what we have started here. I seriously doubt that we are going to topple any agricultural giants at this point, but we have perhaps, a quieter path for now. That of working the earth and sharing its rewards with our sisters and friends. Of teaching others the beauty and importance of non-GMO living. In these times, we all should be growing as much of our food stuffs as we can. The heirlooms that we are saving, to me, bring me back to earth, back to simpler times and the gentle art of growing things. Sure we can pit ourselves against the Monsanto's of the world, but for now, I would rather share a handful of heirloom seeds with someone or teach others that what they are taking for granted as safe to eat, isn't!
The Giants will be there. We need to grow and make ourselves well learned in all of the things that we believe in. We have the will and the way . I will cherish this time of learning and becoming a keeper of the seed. Of getting to know all of you and of being a part of something so important as this. We can do anything we set out hearts and minds on. I am so proud of how we have hit the ground running and all of our energy and ideas that we share. We are some cool cats!
If I am not careful , the wild Irish woman in me will get all riled up and want to topple giants, but I need to remember that all things start small and a good lesson is in the simple form of a seed. Mighty oaks spring from tiny acorns.
p.s. I hope this bit of musing makes sense to someone besides me.

Good evening, Mavens! First let me catch up (as catch can.....)
Tina, wonderful article on the blog and much needed! Good job, maven friend!
Dawn, if you can make it here by 9am (St Louis time) Sunday morning you're more than welcome to come along to Bakers Creek. Otherwise you just have to live it vicariously (sp?) through me. (I probably spelled that about as well as I spell "boo coo")
Amy Grace, The Sound of Music is in my list of top 10 of all time - The Wizard of Oz is number one of course. Sing with me now......We're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz, we hear he is a wiz of a wiz, if ever a wiz there was, the Wizard of Oz is one because, because, because, because..........
Alee, what a gold mine you found on campus - can't wait to hear more.
On to business: In the henhouse under Projects (because it seemed the best place of the four options) is a "Beginners Guide for Mavens." Check it out and let me know what you think, especially if I left anything out that should be included to get a maven up and running in a day or so.
In the Keeping in Touch Forum where the DOE thread is located, there is a new thread called HHM/HM Henhouse Connection. This is for HHMs particular to be able to post thoughts/comments/suggestions as they aren't able to post directly in the henhouse.
The first draft of the newsletter has been read and ok'd by the sounding boards - Annika and Ruth. Here's a brief synopsis: * Greeting from Mother Hen * Maven of the Month (although this may need to be postponed until a later issue) * Reference to initial post * Hot Topics from last few weeks (journaling, list of websites & books, etc.) * Coming Attractions (Farmgirl U minor, book club, bumper stickers, etc.) * Reminders (blog site, Spring Fling, etc.) This will be posted under Farmgirl Chapter Chatter - first "release" on October 11, 2008. Hot Topics, Coming Attractions, and Reminders are basically a one-sentence blurb with a link to more info.
That's all from Karen's Korner for tonight. Enjoy your evening, sleep well, and chat with you tomorrow.
God bless - Karen ~ Chickherder & Farmgirl Sister #311
P.S. Annika, great job on the heirloom essay! I didn't get to read it all yet - just skimmed it - but what I saw was great.

Good morning, Mavens! Is it as chilly where you are as it is here in MO? I slept fine last night but the night before hubby and I froze. I couldn't figure out why the furnace hadn't kicked on but I discovered the reason when I went to check the thermostat later that morning. We used to have the old kind from '68 but when we got a new furnace they put in a programmable thermostat and apparently one of us turned the blower to Off when summer hit. It was a rude awakening (heh heh - awakening - I just got that) to autumn!
Chelsey, welcome to the Heirloom Mavens! There's a "Beginner's Guide for Mavens" in MJ's Heirloom Mavens henhouse if you want to check that out. It will save you having to plow through 67 pages for info - although you'll want to do that sometime as it's a fascinating read. http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=582
Corrine, saw your posts in the henhouse. So glad to see you here! I was afraid we scared you off and you contribute so much to the group - sure didn't want to see that. It brought a smile to my face to see the last post was by corinnelouise. See -> (yep, my face is just about that round but not yellow)
Okay, I have running to do today because I have my car back from the shop! Yipee!!! I'll in in and out here this morning but gone most of the afternoon and evening.
Knock yourselves out, mavens. I hope to see a lot more action here today even with the missing-in-action-Teresa Sue.
Good morning, Sam!
God bless - Karen ~ Chickherder & Farmgirl Sister #311
P.S. Annika, I just finished absorbing your post and well said, mousey! Don't let anyone tell you that you can't write either. I love the tie-in with the seeds being the tools to build a better future. And the might oak analogy - well, we are a bunch of nuts! |

I am excited that my book is in at the library. I am going to pick it up on the way to a farm field trip with the kids. I also subscribed to Hobby Farm through a school fundraiser from someone at hubby's work. I was reading through the April issue of Country Living. I got it from the library so it's like new to me. Anyway, did anyone see the article about Blackberry FArm in the Appalachias in Tennessee? They grow rare and heirloom varieties of plants. The quote from the master gardener, John Coykendall, was "We make use of the produce in the culinary sense, but we also preserve the seeds for future generations. The garden at Blackberry Farms is about heritage, history, and preservation." I just thought I would share it because it was so wonderful to read about it. I hope noone minds. I am so excited about the newsletter and beginner's guide Karen has been working on. It is wonderful. Thanks for all your hard work, Karen. Amy Grace~Sorry to hear that you are having work trouble. I hope things get better. Rene~Have fun in Iowa. Annika~I loved your post. So true.
I'm off to our field trip.

Ruth, my mouth literally feel open (thankfully you all weren't here - it wasn't pretty) when I read about the blackberry farm. One of the small strides I've made is in decluttering my magazine collection, darn it. It isn't stripped down by any means yet so I may still have it around. "Heritage, history and preservation" - that phrase says it all.............and enjoy your field trip!
I did a few updates/posts in the henhouse and need some input over there.
Back to the homefront...............
