Here is another great catalog and their website. Didn't know if this has already been posted or not: Seeds of Change..... http://www.seedsofchange.com
They have quite a listing of rare heirloom seeds. One example is the "Star of David" Okra, the "Spitzenberg" Apple which is said to be Thomas Jeffersons favorite apple (goes back to the 1800's), "Jacobs Cattle" Bean, and watermelons include: "Early Moonbeam", "Moon and Stars", "Sweet Dakota Rose." Oh yeah, pumpkins!!! "Howden" and Rouge Vif D'Etampes." There's more check them out.

Okay. Oh geez, I'm not even sure how to say this. I think we have a few leaders here.... a few that very educated and informed and the others that just kinda go thrown in the mix and are trying to do what they can. I know I have personally received a couple emails this week as to who's "in charge". Thats a large part of why I havent been posting. I love the fact that we are hitting the dorr running, but I also feel bad for those of us, that work, or work at home and come back to 3-5 more pages and 100 more posts in the henhouse. As I've said before, I may not be the one for the job of Mother Hen, as I've been submerged in farmmarket, putting up the last of my harvest and trying to spend time with my hubby that works from 7am til 10pm, 2 jobs back to back. I simply have not had time to learn.... I guess what I am personally saying is, who wants who in charge? I was so honored that Rene and Linda Ellen nominated me for this project, but I know when I'm in over my head....I would be just as happy to take a back seat... The other thing is, I soooooo dont want there to be "wrinkles" in our system. If one or two people are emailing me about stuff then that may or may not create animosity between sisters. Ugh. I am sick to my stomach over this. I havent been posting because I didnt know how to say this, and without deflection in typing I am really afraid that something is going to be taken out of context. Please dont get me wrong, everything here is greatly appreciated and needed...but in due time. I am just getting to the point where I turn my computer off and walk away because its too much.
Please advise on what YOU ALL want me to do....

Oh yeah, since I am in Louisiana, zone 8, I am willing to grow the "Heritage Strawberries and Satsumas. I am already trying to get a start of Louisiana Mayhaws. They are a type of swamp hawthorn tree/bush and makes awesome jellies and syrups! I would love to receive seeds from you ladies if it will grow in my hot, humid zone 8.

Tina, your writing on Organic says it all beautifully. You are very gifted.
Corinne your advice to TS is, "Spot on" as they say. There is a poem that starts "people always come into your life for a reason, a season or a life time, when you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do"... the rest of it can be read at http://www.steeldog.com/reasonseasonlifetime.htm If anyone should understand "seasons" it is us Mavens, right?
TS from what I can tell~ how sad for her. I think that there are some people who are so rattled by the light and the power of others that when faced with the choice of either "growing" or running, they choose to run. Just keep being you, and shining your light, it always attracts those that are willing to be "there" for a lifetime. Enjoy your trip and get home safely. When are you back? As I need to come that way, but want you to be there when I do.

Good morning, mavens!
Has anyone else noticed that sometimes the person listed as the last poster to this thread on the forums page is not the last poster when you get here? For instance, it shows Homespun Livin as the last one to post here but Corrine's post is right above mine as I type this. I've noticed this on other threads too where the last person to post isn't the last person on the thread - and they aren't the one before the last or before that or before that.
On to maven-ish items, I may be shedding computer-generated tears of frustration again my henhouse post submitted without my permission (i.e. I got as far as "Corrine," and off it flew to the henhouse). At least it did actually post so I could go back and edit it. Therefore I'm not sure how much posting I'll do but anything I think will be painful to lose I'll just type in Word and then paste it here. Twenty minutes I spent on that post last night to have it blown to feathers.
Submitting now and moving over to Word. Yes, that's a warning.
Good morning, Dawn.
God bless - Karen ~ Chickherder & Farmgirl Sister #311 |

Dawn, Since I "nominated" you as Queen of the Mavens, I think it is ok for me to comment on this... Your comment on "riding others coat tails"... UGH.... Ok, One of the MANY reasons I thought you would be brilliant at "leading" is because you are so honoring of others talents and abilities. I think that is what GREAT leadership is, my theory has always been "hire the right people for the job and let them do the job" this little group wouldn't be the same (in my view) if we had someone on the "top" using a "top down management style" of leadership. I love that you are secure enough to let everyone be themselves, offer what they have to offer and shine in their own strengths. It takes a "servant leader", to ignite the brilliance in others... and create an environment where everyone feels that they can offer their own knowledge and talents.............Never once have I thought you weren't all I hoped you would be... and I am sure the Mavens feels the same, So keep on keeping on girlfriend, you are doing an awesome job!
I have been so blown away by everyone, the amount of talent, dedication to purpose, respect of each other, honoring of what another brings, etc. has truly been fun to see....

MOrning Karen....
(everytime we do that, I think of that LonneyTunes Cartoon where the sheepdog and the coyote clock in "mornin Sam...mornin Ralph".... and then the sheepdog goes and sits onthe hill and the coyote tries to get sheep all day, and then at the end of the night they clock out...." 'Nite Sam....'Nite Ralph"....) aahhhhh, I love Looney Tunes!!!

Since you are our newest member (I think but you're definitely close to it), what things would you like to know and/or what would have helped you in the first few days of entering the HM nest? Obviously, pointing people to the acronyms is one of them but what else? Then, how much experience do you have with doing a newsletter (heh, heh) especially the nuts and bolts side of it? Things like structuring the newsletter, adding graphics, etc. That's not my strong suit although I can fake the structure by following Jen's (sisterhood newsletter editor) lead. As far as getting involved, we're pretty much an if-you-have-an-interest-in-it-jump-on-it kind of group. So if you see something we're talking about and there's isn't someone taking the lead, take it! And if someone is taking the lead, I'm sure most of us could use a back up. You can look on page 53 of this thread to see a synopsis of ideas that have been tossed about. I'm going to throw one at you just in case you'd be interested: Teresa Sue is going to do an heirloom-related monthly post in the herb forum. If you're active in the Garden Gate and/or Farm Kitchen forums and would like to do a similar post there, that would be cool. If that isn't your forte, speak right up because because before too long, something will show up here that makes you want to jump out of your chair and shout, "That one! That's what I want to do!"
Karen, I think that the acronyms is a great help. I also think that within the first few days it would be nice to know that anyone can participate even if they are unable to join the sisterhood. The other thing would be pointing people to the list of websites and books we are all talking about here so they can look them up.
I am so sorry that I am not good with a newsletter. I am a bit slow on the computer. I wish I could help.
I can put up similar posts in the Garden Gate and Farm Kitchen. I will keep my eye out for Teresa Sue's posts.

Heeheehee, "flog me with heirloom tomatoes" is a good one Dawn. We all get overwhelmed. I get it to. I sometimes feel like a little bitty unimportant person here and wonder what I'm doing with all of these amazing women who constantly out think me... You are doing just fine by my sights, and we all know that you secretly have a real life outside the computer so don't worry You'll do just fine..just tell us to slow the heck down sometimes...we are all full of a million and two ideas and can't wait to post them.
I think partly that is why Karen was thinking of a newsletter, to give a re-cap of all of the ideas with out having to sift through all of the posts...I dunno. I'm just clucking away this morning.

Geez Annika ~ I know exactly what you are saying about the "feeling a little bit unimportant" ~ although it seems weird to me to have you say that... I guess we all have those moments.. and just for the record Dawn, of course if I were going to throw heirloom tomatoes, I would only sacrifice them to this group (LOL)..

Dawn~I really appreciate what you do here. It can get a bit busy and hard to keep up with at times. I think you are doing a great job.
I am trying to keep up with all the ideas here. I don't have alot of time to spend on the computer but I try to jump in when I can. I am thinking of starting a binder that I can print or write some great ideas in from the group. I can take it with me and read it while the kids are in their homeschool gym or coop classes or while waiting at appointments.
I am trying to learn all I can without getting lost.

Hmmmm....did I goof again?? Please do not think that I want to be in charge of anything because I wouldn't have a clue. Just wanted to post some helpful info to add to y'alls list of goodies. :) I am extremely contented to grow what I can in my zone, homeschool my kids and keep up with my house (which is a job in itself).
Dawn, please forgive me if I stepped over the line or anything. I think that since you were nominated and rightly so, that you should remain the leader and lead us at whatever pace is in the best interest of this group and that won't overwhelm you or us. :)

Annika, please never put yourself down. You are one of the force up here and harboring this kind of feeling doen't do justice to the bright soul you are. Same for Rene and all the ones sharing these moments. Hope we can make you have less and less of these. Love to ya'll. Corinne

Alright, alright.... Hey, I gotta go tend to that "secret" life I have.... I was just thinking that when I am left alone for days on end, my head starts to screw with me.... I wish I lived closer to ANYONE at this point. I love talking to you all like this, but I need some HUMAN contact! As Charlie Brown would say...ARGH!

Good morning again, Mavens!
Dawn, I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this, especially since I’m sure I’m one of the ones “taking charge” – because honestly I’ve thought it about myself. I don’t want to be in charge and Dawn can confirm that but I do need to feel some sense of order and with everything flying so fast, this is how I’ve been dealing with it. I’m sorry if – no, I’m very sorry if I’ve caused us to lose people from the group. It wasn’t my intent to override Dawn, it was my intent to help her out by being more involved. I thought that way it would take some of the load off of her for reasons she’s already stated. Of course, I didn’t tell her that directly so, Dawn, I’m sorry that’s caused the very thing I was hoping to avoid. Guess I took the chickherder thing to the extreme.
WARNING: The following is only my opinion. In no way, shape or form am I attempting to take charge. I am put this out here to let Dawn know what would help me and so everyone knows my thoughts.
In my opinion, Rene and LindaEllen got it right. Dawn should be in charge. To me she’s got the spirit and enthusiasm to motivate us all.
Still on topic: Newsletter. Annika, you’re right on target. (And I can’t even believe you feel unimportant in this group! Give me a tomato!) I suggested this for the very reason that people are having pages and pages to catch up on. Last night I was thinking maybe it should be a weekly thing as much posting as is going on. I’d be more than happy to take it on since I have to do this anyway just to keep things straight myself. But I want people to be okay with it so state your preference.
Taking the cookbook out of the mavens henhouse. I still plan to be a part of it in the Kitchen Forum just so-s ya know but any info I might suggest will be per me, not as a maven representative – again unless y’all want to contribute. Oh, jeez, now I’m tip-toeing and I’m so not a tip-toe person.
Again, we’re just experiencing growing pains. I so don’t want to lose anyone along the way but just like with TS’s friend, sometimes what started out a great relationship becomes more of a strain down the road because the fit wasn’t what they thought it would be. Kind of like buying a new pair of shoes – they look purty, they feel good in the store, you feel good wearing them and then you wear them to go shopping and suddenly you realize there’s a spot in them that rubs against your heel. You can take it to the cobbler (do they have those anymore?) and get it fixed, you can exchange it for a new pair of shoes, or you can return them (or donate them to some other poor schlup). We can put the issues out in the open and deal with them, we can “restructure”, or we can leave. We’re big mavens. We can have differences. We need to speak up when something’s not working so we can fix it. It’s important to the world that we get the message out there.
Dawn, what’s next?
God bless - Karen ~ Chickherder & Farmgirl Sister #311

Okay before I go to that wonderful secret life..... I want to offer an apology to everyone and anyone that I offended or didnt offend (If I didnt offend you, please take a number...kidding)
I honestly felt like that If I didnt say anything regarding my emails, then dissention in the ranks would ensue. Then I felt like if I DID say something dissention in the ranks would ensue....
Please. lets just move on with our mission and leave well enough alone.... I am happy to be here with knowledgable, talented women likes yerselves.... For those of you that emailed me, I guess all I can say is, grab a vine and hold on tight! Do what you can, want to or feel like at this point. If its too much, do what I do, turn computer off, walk away and find some chocolate....
