Karen~Sorry to not know this but what is the HMBC? I have not joined the sisterhood because of finances right now. It seems I am always a little short at the end of every week. I am going to try to put aside some money each week when I have it so I can join. Amy Grace~I agree with you about the larger companies. I am so disappointed to see that some of the organic food companies are being swallowed up by big companies. YUCK!! I need to make more of my own things. One thing I want to try is my own granola bars. My kids love granola bars but they're filled with HFC~shocker right?!! Dawn~What hatchery do you work for? I would love some heirloom chickens. When is the best time to order them? Teresa Sue~I find my house is falling apart around me while I sit here trying to catch up. My poor kids~I need to homeschool them~tear me away. They can be included in this as part of homeschooling. We'll call it science. Ruth

Ruth: I work at meyer hatchery in Polk Ohio. the best time to order chicks is in the spring. I got mine around mid-May and they are still not laying. A great idea for you would be to brood the baby chicks for your children and make a lesson plan out of it. I can help in any way with that. Most chicken start laying around 17-23 weeks of age so if you order early in March.... you should have eggs by July. I alsohave a realllllly awesome granola recipe that I willsend you as soon as I'm done here. I eat it every morning with yogurt.
Ruth: HMBC is the book club (heirloom mavens book club)you can be a part of it even without the membership.
Maybe once BBB is over, we can plan a trip to the White House?? I'm half serious...

Karen - I'm laughing out loud. "Who was that aproned woman?" Ruth - yup HFCS is in everything these days - my family won't go shopping with me anymore because I'm always reading all the labels and then ranting about it. Fortunately, even though the organic companies are not necessarily independent, you can find stuff without HFCS. Even granola bars, but man are they expensive, making your own is the way to go. I am definitely an oddity myself here in the heart of conventional agriculture/wheat country but I'm used to being the oddball, and sooner or later the oddballs become the examples so I can only hope. Ruth, being a creative bunch of women (yourself included) we've managed to come up with our own lingo. You will find a lingo list in MJ's Heirloom Mavens henhouse Project Discussions folder in the thread "Lingo Explanations (Such as PMJ)." It may help to open a second window with the list while you read through the postings for awhile. Now that we have the henhouse, we're trying to keep things grouped by topic in there. EVERYONE can read posts in the henhouse so the next time you have a few minutes (or hours) free, pay a visit. I'm so glad to here you're saving your pennies for a sisterhood membership. Until you can comment here on anything you read about in the henhouse. As you can tell, we spend a lot of time over here too. This thread really feels like home to me. The henhouse just helps keep us more organized.
Did this make sense? or is it clear as mud?

No Karen, you made total sense. I agree that this thread is "home". It helps to have the henhouse topics for reference though, at 59 pages and counting it is hard to go back and find specific info for some reason?! Amy grace

Thank you so much ladies. I have received the emails with the yummy granola bar recipes which I can't wait to try. Karen~That made perfect sense. I think I need one whole uninterrupted day to just read all the posts in the henhouse. Dawn~I hope to order some chickens in March. That's my birthday, too. Maybe they can be a birthday present. Ruth

Dawn, you forgot to add your address. Theresa Sue and Karen, please tell me what you are interrrested in and send you address. I won't take money for seeds, you will send me some whenever you get some. Thanks for your offer though. Corinne

Hi Corinne, I hope you have a good night and I wanted to say that you have good taste in seeds =) Heehee I can see it now "Mavens did up dirt in Washington"... "who were those aproned strangers?" To your trowels ladies! I will try to make up a list of seeds this week sometime. I usually buy too many anyway, so trading some would be a good idea for me too I hope that everyone is having a good day

Okay, I'll make this quick as my computer has locked me up twice trying to post this. There is a thread in the farm kitchen regarding the HFCS commercials. Here's the link: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25009

Whew! I was able to get that HFCS link out there. I was beginning to think there were spies on this thread threatening to undo our efforts. Ya know........when word gets out...........just a thought.......
Dawn, when you get back would you post your granola recipe under the RECIPES thread I just started in the Project folder?
Ladies, you now have a place to put recipes for using all those heirloom goodies.

Thanks Annika, please let me know which ones you would like to have, so I can save some to send out to you. Have always tried to save a bit of french heirlooms even if I am going to retire in Canada. For having had gardens before these do really well in our cold zone 4. And as you can see, I like soups and stew a lot. Corinne

What happened to what I just had in this box? What is going on with my computer? I may need to rip it open and look for the spy that's causing me all this trouble and give him what for! Well, here I go again........second try at posting...........
Corrine, look at the post above yours regarding recipes. Please post any and/or all of your soup and stew recipes because they would be most welcome in my house!

Mavens, Heather (Summerstead) is willing to put together a second edition farmgirl cookbook. I just put a post out there for her about our recipe thread in the henhouse. I was thinking we could tie in with her as far as heirloom recipes, info, importance of, etc. If things work out, we could maybe get copies to sell at events, farmers markets.
I thought of having our own cookbook but honestly I don't want to be in "competition" with one the farmgirls at large are putting together. By providing material for the second edition farmgirl cookbook, it would help us get the message out to others that might not look this direction. (I know there are only so many threads I can keep up with and I'm not doing a very good job at the others right now.)
What I was thinking - and I will post this in the henhouse also - is having a newsletter. So for details about it.............go to the henhouse and I'll meet you in the projects folder.

Annika, I'm going to try your West African Peanut Soup recipe for supper! I have all the ingredients - even fresh okra from the garden. No eggplant but I do have zucchini from the farmers market.
And when I start to get my thoughts together on the newsletter - probably tomorrow - I'll come knocking on your nest.

I would love a newsletter!! Is there anything I could do even though I am not part of the sisterhood? I think it would be wonderful to have those tips all together and all our new ideas.
The cookbook sounds wonderful too. I just requested The Edible Heirloom Garden from our library. I hope to get these books soon and start reading and learning. I think I am going to create a binder for all the information I get. I must go cook supper now.

I would fight for more healthy and organic farming practices. I am surrounded by mono-cropping and cannot see it as sane or healthy. I have no idea what all they are dumping on it and me and the earth. So that is what I would do if I were a bold and brave lady such as MaryJane instead of a shy mouse.
