Dawn,
Congrats on the new job~ How awesome~ At a SPA???
It is/was so clear that you were the right "chick" for this Hen House and I am so thrilled you excepted the challenge. I just know that it is going to be an amazing experience for all of us.

I think we should all keep journals of all the things we are learning, all the sites given, all the things we "want" to accomplish etc. I just sense that the amount of "shifting" I will do from today on... Is going to be huge.

Karen, Thank you for this website~ I will dive into it tomorrow~ You gals rock! what a joy to find sisters of the heart!

It IS a joy and a blessing. I have a lot of health problems, and the more I pull away from supermarket foods and processed junk, the better I'm doing. I think you are right about that journal and needing the info to be chronicled. We have so much information to discuss and share. I'm going to go buy a set of note books and make covers for them just for this chapter.

Thank you all for starting this wonderful and up-coming chapter and chapter in my life. This is what I need to be doing.

Rene ~ thank you for just being your wonderful self and opening new vistas for all of us
Dawn ~ congrats on the new job and thank you for taking on this chapter
Karen ~ Thank you for the links
Ladies this is going to be an adventure, I suggest we all hold on!

Good morning, mavens! I couldn't wait to sign on this morning and see what had been added since last night. I feel so honored to be associated with all of you. And Dawn, you definitely are the right farmgirl for the job (here and the spa ), chick.

Since it isn't storming here yet (in fact, it isn't even raining at the moment but T-storms are predicted for the next three days) I'm heading out to a barn sale and a yard sale. I've got some really cool things at the barn sale place a few years ago. And the yard sale is at a house with old farm implements (what's the word I'm looking for - big things to work the fields with - hay rakes, plows, etc. pulled by tractors or horses). Anyways, still waking up. But.............

After I return I will be on the web and (possibly simultaneously) watching the "Future of Food" video and posting info. I should be back around noon unless the storms force me home.

Dawn - FYI: Robbie said if you have an extra monitor (not everyone's married to a geek like me so I told him probably not) or if you can borrow one from a friend, try that first before buying a new monitor just to make sure that's the problem with the computer - although he thinks that's probably what it is. If that's the issue, you can probably get a new monitor for less than it would cost to fix it, especially if you replace like with like.

God bless -
Karen

Dawn,
I am sure there are (guidelines) but I don't remember them off the cuff (not much of a following the rules kind of gal ~ ha-ha)... But I know that Sunny will go over that with you. She is out of the office today, but will be back Monday.

So we started a list of gals that want to be in the Hen House~ Maybe we should go through the thread and "list" websites already given~(and try to keep them in one place),that way come next week it will be easier to transfer them over. I know at the Henhouse there is a spot to recommend books~ so maybe today we gals can recommend books so you have a list of those as well.

Have you seen the Oct issue of the magazine? So talk about confirmation. I have had the magazine since the grand opening of the store (shhhh), and of course have thumbed through it and thumbed through it.. but last night as I was laying in bed and thumbing through it yet again, out POPS pages 82 -88, where I swear I had never seen it before... (Weird)... and it is titled (get his) "Why Organic" where MJ gives us about 20 websites.... I was stunned..............The article is nothing short of brilliant (of course it is MaryJane), but even if it weren't, it is brilliant.

And while it isn't necessarily about "heirloom" there is so much there... So I hope everyone on this thread gets a copy, as it is a must read in this journey of ours.

I am attending a "slow food" dinner/auction/thingy tonight~ and I cannot wait to report back.

I have been challenged by some of the badges in the sisterhood~ and I want to remind you gals to journal and apply for your badges as we go through this as so many of them will apply. Example: FARM Kitchen Almost all the badges apply, many of them in "Garden Gate".. and maybe even some in Cleaning up and going green, Also watch "each other". I will say it again, "While there are so many Cute aspects to the sisterhood badge program, there are also some very "life changing and Life affirming" badges as well ~ So be really mindful of them.. I would love nothing more then to "flood" the farm with our gals earning badges and sharing ALL that we are learning and doing....So dawn it would be AWESOME to have a place at the Henhouse where Gals can "brag" or you can "Brag on them", when they earn a new badge in this particular area!

You are going to be awesome~ and we are all "here with you and for you".

Hopefully this helps us all have a little direction today to keep the excitement and momentum moving forward........( I added a "tab" in my notebook called MJ's Mavens.........:)

Members of the Farmgirl Sisterhood will gain access to set up “henkeeping” in our online “Henhouses.” We now have nearly 500 Farmgirl Chapters around the world where members meet regularly face-to-face, and even a few “virtual” chapters where members meet solely online. Our Henhouses will give Farmgirl Chapter members who become part of the official Farmgirl Sisterhood a place to meet online to chat; post photos; and share instructions, tutorials, and more just for their own chapter. Each Henhouse will also offer a “Bulletin Board,” where a designated “Head Hencho” for that chapter will be able to post chapter announcements and events. Members of the public can view these sites, but only Farmgirl Sisterhood members will have access to post in their chapter’s Henhouse. (Click here to go to the Henhouse forum.)

http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/farmgirl-sisterhood/

dawn the above is a "quote from the henhouse guidelines" and then the link to the guidelines...

Look at you girls go! I am IMPRESSED! Annika; I looked at the nass.usda one, I didnt get much from it. My train of thought is this: Every time I send an email i have the option of a custom signature...I am going to put stats below my name and garner attention that way. For instance: In my Hobby Farm book it states that at the turn of the centruy over 90% of American were farmers.... today its about 1%. So..... what are we eating? Where did it come from? Who's done what with it? To be honest, the past 2 days have kinda made me sick. I have been looking around my kitchen in disgust. I want to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. How can I be convincing to others if I dont practice what I preach? Anyhoo.... I am also going to post stats on my blog... I've always heard that "figures dont lie, liars figure..." thats why I want stats. To back us up. Also, was talking with Karen (livingwell4u) this morning and was thinking that if you are not too shy, get with your local garden clubs, homemaker clubs and see if they will let you be a guest speaker. I have done this numerous times with my job in skincare (preaching about skin cancers...) Usually they will allow you to talk, have a question/answer session and feed you....or maybe you could feed them as part of your presentation! Food for thought.... I love saying that now!!

I'm baaaaaaaaack again. I kept running errands thinking that the rain was going to start any minute. I got home just before 2:30 and the sun was shining - no rain except for a very few sprinkles. Pushed the driving and went to Borders to see if MJs magazine was out yet - no . Actually went to 2 of them but I've never seen the magazine at the first one - have to work on that.

I have the 2nd DVD loaded right now and it has three articles on it from the Center for Food Safety. The first two articles (from 2000 and 2002) are about GE foods and the third (2005) is on organic foods and why they are better for farming and eating. Their website is www.centerforfoodsafety.org. (Would someone please tell me how to make a clickable link?)

Paydirt! I finally found where the weblinks are they mentioned on the DVD.
Basically, you go to The Future of Food website (www.thefutureoffood.com), click on Resources, click on Get Involved and go crazy. Here are the websites listed:
The Center for Food Safety (I mentioned this one above) - http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org
The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods (grassroots lobbying campaign to label GE foods) - http://www.thecampaign.org
Organic Seed Alliance - http://www.seedalliance.org
Rethinking School Lunch - http://www.ecoliteracy.org/programs/rsl.html
Say No to GMOs! - http://www.saynotogmos.org (This one looks like a goldmine. "This site offers extensive information on the complex and controversial issue of genetic engineering.")
Union of Concerned Scientists - http://www.ucsusa.org (my dh will love this one, being a chemical engineer in a previous life now working for the USDA and all)
Crop Choice - http://www.cropchoice.com
Consumer's Union - http://www.consumersunion.org
Greenpeace - the link they gave is no longer available but here's GE link to their site - http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/campaigns/genetic-engineering
PANNA (Pesticide Action Network North America) - http://www.panna.org
Organice Consumers Association - http://www.organicconsumers.org
Californians for GE-free Agriculture - http://www.calgefree.org
Genetic Engineering Action Network - http://www.geaction.org
University of Northern Iowa Local Food Project - http://www.uni.edu/ceee/foodproject
Our Love of Children Foundation - http://www.iwanthealthyfood.org/ourluv
Green.tv - http://www.green.tv (duh!)
Handharvested.org - http://www.handharvested.org (duh again!)

The rest of the DVD files are articles that I will have to read and report on later. Maybe we need an Heirloom Maven School/Library/whatever.......? I think this was suggested above - I'm just typing whatever pops into my head.

Now I need to take care of the groceries I brung home. Went to a roadside stand (family farm - very nice place), a farmers market and Whole Foods for stuff I couldn't get the other two places. Well, that the fact that WF is a few stores up from Borders..... And I did put the perishables away already.....I'm not that scatterbrained.......yet......although I'm close sometimes. I just need to do a little food prep so that things fit better in the fridge. Just shoved them in there until I could get done posting.

Be back in a bit.............

P.S. Dawn, how about putting a heads up about the mavens under the garden gate and farm kitchen forums.........and any others that might be appropriate. It might get some more farmgirls to sign up for the sisterhood!

Well, we are in the brainstorming point of this thing so I expect that not all of the info will be what we are looking for. I will continue to delve in to the vast amount of web stuff out there. There is actually a LOT of information available, it's just sifting it for what our needs are that takes time.
Thanks for letting me know Dawn =)

I need to work on having more of the food in the house be locally grown and organic...So that I can preach what I eat =) There is a merit badge for this and I'm for working on it, gotta go look it up, I'm addle headed and can't remember what its called but getting your family to eat all or mostly the right food is HARD...and restaurants ... forget it!
Each one of us is an agent of change waiting to happen, this is a monumental thing that we are starting

Hi Ladies!

Sorry to be late to the party, but this is something that is very important to me! I just sent an email to Sunny asking to add me to the henhouse! I am so excited.

This fall and winter I am going to be working hard on re-vamping my yard and garden space so I can grow as much of my own food as possible. I am going to be working really hard on companion planting to maximize my growing area. The more heirloom varieties that I can use- the better! I am very excited!

Our problem personally is lack of water, so I am having to learn arid land farming with a shallow well. Everything has to be hand watered.
Alee YAY! glad you joined our little group! You'll love what's going on here!

Here are just three more sites that may be useful. I have lot of links on micro-farming, organic and sustainable farming etc. Trying to get the time to read them all is another thing!

Alee, I knew you'd come around! hehe.... Who said I was perfect for this?? Perfect I'm not. Convicted, stubborn and driven? Oh yeah.... my methods may not be correct, but my hearts in the right place! Annika, would you like to keep track of websites? You seem to be on a roll! Oh my Rene, what have we started?? Can you see us in a restaurant? Pulling hamburgers out of patrons mouths asking them..."DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR TOMATOS COME FROM?" Seriously, together we can be heard.... oh, everyone that wants in email me with your address! I have surprises! I love to gift!!
