There is an old apple tree of unknown variety on county land that I pick apples from most years. I would love to sprout some of the seeds and preserve some of these wonderfully fragrant and tasty tart-sweet apples, so where there's a will there's a way! Yes I know. It'll take a decade before I have an apple tree , but I would enjoy watching it make it's way from seed to tree. I think we are off to a good start! At least there is enthusiastic interest in keeping heirlooms alive.

Oh my goodness! I saw the first four posts yesterday and wanted to get some info together before I jumped in. Had to do the food pantry delivery & errand thing today so just got signed on. Dawn already called giving me an update but I had no idea what a flurry of interest this was going to spawn. Rene, put your shovel in the ground and hit a gusher! And I do believe it's a well, not a waterline that will fade out. (Did that make any sense???)

Anyways, as I was telling Dawn I wanted to post about a story that's on a video we bought regarding the state of food in America. Here's a synopsis and if anyone remembers the details, please fill in the holes: There was a farmer who was growing organic soybeans. As we all may (or may not) know, soybeans that are not genetically modified are hard to come by anymore. Somewhere along the line it was discovered that his soybeans were no longer "pure." He was meticulous about his crops and had no idea what happened until one day a truck was driving along the road and some of the "stuff" in the bed blew off into his field. The truck was from a company that develops GE seeds/foods. They sued the man for using their product when in reality it was they had "contaminated" his. I'm not sure if it went to the Supreme Court but it went pretty high up and of course, the company won and the farmer lost. (I won't say who the company is here because I don't remember for sure right now, but if I'm remembering correctly, I'm sad to say their headquarters are in my backyard. Not literally, of course. If they were I'd have to get really radical - not wanting to get too descriptive here and have it come back to haunt me.)

If I find the video or manage to google the info, I'll provide more details.

God bless -

As I wrote in Dawn's "Janes of all trades" post, we're beginning to lay the grounwork for a CSA and after reading your post, Rene, I thought, "All heirloom varieties! That will be our calling card!" This is sooooooooooooooooo in the beginning stages right now. First I have to be sure that I can do it physically. This is the first year I've been able to be outside in the summer (problems with heat) and ache-free enough to garden (arthritis issues). It's the best summer I've ever had. But I digress.............

Finding MaryJane and the farmgirls at this particular time of my life is amazing. (For me, it's just another thing that makes me shake my head in wonder at how God works things out.) So today the CSA is still a couple of sentences on a piece of paper and tucked under my pillow. We're planning next year to do a very (VERY) small scale version and see how that goes. I'm pretty excited to see what this time next year will be like because at this time last year, I had NO idea this was in my future. I would have laughed in your face if you'd told me - HA!HA! Now we're planning on getting chicks in the spring and having a real garden and "practice" CSA.

Does MaryJane realize what an impact she has on the lives of little people like me?

This is an area that so many of us are gaining a passion for. Maybe because in general we (as farmgirl) preserve so many of our heritages, from sewing, to canning, to tatting and beyond. But to me it is personal. I know what it feels like to loose your health and almost your life and find out that so much of the suffering could have been alleviated had I known that simply changing what I ate could also change my life.. then to find out that so many of the things we eat arent even pure anymore.. and that while the food is chemically changed to withstand heat or weeds or what have you, they dont possess the same nutritional attributes.. all for $ (ok that might be a bit simplistic) but it is all still a little to frankenstein to me.

Another great film is king corn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiCRwMMh9k8

We ask the question "why is America obese" and yet we feed ourselves the same thing we feed cattle to fatten them up for slaughter. WOW! OK.. soap box is now gone.....

All this to simply say, for me... it is all connected.. and regaining my health is getting back to the basics.. the real basics~ and that is what heirloom is, food the way it was meant to be... R

I have noticed too that what I eat affects my being. I have become rather picky, only wanting real food. The kids think I am nuts but I know I am not. Someday they will thank me by passing this on. They just don't know it yet!!! And I would like to join this HenHouse as well. I haven't grown any heirlooms before, but had planned on it for next years garden!!

So true, Rene, so true.

I just got done Googling "monsanto + soybeans + farmer + sued." Actually I didn't get done because I got too nauseous and teary-eyed. I didn't realize that Monsanto spent most of 1996-98 buying out other seed companies to promote their GE version. I can see where my path is leading........... Never considered myself an "activist" but if I don't take a stand, where does that leave our children and their children and their children and ......................

Marcy Jo~ We are all in the learning process~ I love that we get to do this one as a "sisterhood".

Karen~ check out www.slowfoodusa.org maybe you wont have to walk the "path" alone in your "back yard". But I feel you heart and get it.. really I do... I am learning that there are positive, teaching avenues that starts a ripple effect of change. I love in the sisterhood that MJ always says "and if you already do this, teach it to someone else". It is like the buy organic, buy local campaign, if you teach your neighbor, or school, or church, or community, and I teach mine, and my neighbor teaches his neighbor... the ripple become waves, and the waves bring change... My little ripple started when I was faced with disease and thankfully I had enough going to ask "what is causing this?" when I didn't get the answers that worked, I started reading and asking more questions.

I have made a personal committment that this year is my year for change and that I walk in intregrity. That all the things I have learned, I put feet too, and I feel so blessed that so many farmgirls are feeling the same thing. It will be fun to go back to this thread in a year and see where we started and where we were and where we are at the end of next summer~ knowing that we did it together.....

Karen, its just scary what they and others are doing. We have to stand up for our selves and our future generations now. We can keep diversity alive in our own small way as others are. I find this truly heartening. What we are planning on doing here is in a small way aiding the earth and all of us on it.
EDIT: Rene just said what I couldn't think how to say, tiny ripples can become big waves. What a strengthening thing to consider...we'll look back and be proud of our first steps later on. I'm proud and thrilled to be part of this.

I'm baaaaack! Had a good interview and got the job. One more thing to add to my growing schedule.. Been reading the posts since I left this afternoon and its women like you that give me hope. Women like us that make me believe we DO have the power to change our state of society. I've never been so honored or humbled to head up a greater project...with such great partners at my side! I am going to contact some local FFA and 4H groups around here to see if we cant get something together locally that would make the commmunity cock their heads to the side and LISTEN. I urge you to do the same. rene, that fact that you have such faith in me is overwhelming. Not only will I strive to make the chapter proud but MJ as well. She IS the ultimate Mother Hen!

Karen~my bestest hen friend~ I think MJ does know..... if she didnt she wouldnt work so hard to give us books, and magazines and a forum to launch a......REVOLUTION. I love that word.

Annika, and all the rest~ You make me proud to be a farmgirl! Please know that I am wanting to plan a "gathering" here, in Ohio for next Spring to kick off our FIRST Heirloom planting season. I have changed my mind to offer all heirloom seedlings at my farm market for resale. We will have a grand time. I pinky promise!

Kisses!

Okay, mavens, I found the DVD that I referenced earlier (about the soybean farmer). It's called "The Future of Food." I got it at Whole Foods but they have a website, www.thefutureoffood.com (I don't know how to create a direct link). It has two DVDs: the first is "an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled grocery store shelves for the past decade. THE FUTURE OF FOOD examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as hugh multinational corporatinos seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today." The second DVD has the following special features:
1 - Farmers' Portraits (there are 4)
2 - Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
3 - Farmer's Markets
4 - Seed Saving
5 - Kids and Fresh Food
6 - Michael Pollan on the Cost of Food
7 - GE Free Recipes
8 - Take Action Toolkit and Web Resources
We watched #2 and #4 tonight and both segments were good and informative with references for those who want more information.

It's almost our bedtime. DH gets up at 4:30am (or tries to at least) so we shoot for being in bed by 8:30. That means I have 12 minutes to do my "nightime routine" and get under the covers. I'll check out the web resources and post on them tomorrow but wanted to get this info out to you tonight since we managed to find the DVD amongst all our "treasures."

I'm baaaaack too! Just had to click on the educational version of The Future of Food. This set includes the above PLUS a 7-page college-level curriculum and "two interviews in which scientists speak out about safety of GMO's." I may have to get this one just for the extra info.

Now I have 3 minutes to get to bed. I'd have at least five if we did have slow-speed internet service.
