Alee, welcome! Been waitin' for you, girl!
Annika, I totally understand blathering. Do it myself - just ask Dawn - or read any of my posts! Thank goodness farmgirls are so understanding.
I finally broke down and badge information from the MJ page into a word document. It took a little time to do each one, but it wasn't hard at all. Now I can see it all at once instead of going back and forth between pages. Nearly all of the badges under "Each Other" could have a maven slant. Farm Kitchen/Know Your Food badge - this is perfect for it. Also Bakeover Makeover, Organic on a Budget and Bustin' Out (trying a new organic food each week). And of course, most (or all) in the Garden Gate can fit, especially the ultimate badge "Heirlooms Forever!"
Back to the kitchen...............

Okay, this is why I type instead of write. I got the typing award my sophmore year in high school so I'm no slouch and still, 4 more entries to this post while I'm typing my one. Of course it didn't help that I accidentally shut the window and had to start over..........
Off of the heirloom topic but still on the organic one, if you think the tomatoes on a hamburger should give them pause, talking to them about the meat would make them scream. The first change we made to our diet was getting rid of the processed stuff, white flour, white bread, white pasta, white sugar, etc. The second one was changing to organic meat. We eat much less meat than we used to but when we do, it's almost always organic, and if not, it's natural (as we define it by reading the label - no growth hormones, no antibiotics, etc.). And it truly does taste so much better. I was reading last night about products that they (cow food companies) put animal by-products in the food. Cows are vegetarians so what are they thinking by feeding them animal stuff???? They aren't thinking about the cows - or us. They're thinking how much can we bulk them up so we make more $$$. Oh, don't even get me started on this one. Just remember, whatever went in the animal/vegetable is going in YOU!

First of all, thank you to MaryJane for being such a wonderful inspiration and example for all of us. One of the things that so inspires me about MJ is that she puts feet under her words. She doesn't just think, "Someone should do something about that" - she thinks "What can I do about that?" That's an area I've always struggled with because I overthink things.
So, in the spirit of MaryJane, what first step(s) are you going to take as an Heirloom Maven? I'm going to (1) contact the local county extension agency to find out what's being done in this area already and (2) introduce myself to people I see who are living the life. On the way home from my adventures today I took some of the back roads and discovered there is an alpaca farm about 10 miles from my house! I was looking at something else and thought I saw a goat (maybe I did) but when I focused on some of the other animals, they were alpacas. It reminded me of the "this will make you cry" post (may not have the name right) and how they comfort each other and their people.
Let's start posting some first steps we can each take. It can be a Maven Idea Bank!
God bless - Karen Farmgirl Sista #311
P.S. Signing off now for awhile since I've put in my fair share. Looking forward to more of ya'lls postings tomorrow. |

Geez Karen! I am rotfl! Wow. Tears in the eyes... okay. I printed them all off (badge info) and made a MJ folder of sorts. I highlight the ones I've appled for. Just to make it easier on me. Jerr Bear is home, dinner time! We are eating a homegrown meal - no meat (at least tonight!). AND wheat pasta!

I'm serious, I'll try to take it on. I think I can keep the links semi organized once we have some place to put them. It will be fun. That is my Motto in life :"It will be fun". And I mostly make things fun, this seems like an endeavour worth the while.
I think first, due to health problems on my own and my mates part, I'm going to go for the organic choices or at least know where my food is coming from and choose the local, most healthy option. I want to know WHAT they are growing on all 4 sides of where I live and exactly what they are putting in the soil and on the plants ...yuck!... I know I won't be a happy camper. Its all mono cropping for miles around. Wheat or barley, I think. I want to make a list of all organic and heirloom growing houses and maybe list them in a blog or on our hen house so we know our options for buying....I don't know. I DO know that I need to come up with a water wise efficient arid land garden system where I live. We are on a shallow aquifer and there just isn't a lot of water to spare, so I need to find drought tolerant heirlooms and grow them as organically as I possibly can. I want to do something on a community level, but I'm still mulling that one over. I am bold as tacks on line, but a shy mouse in person, so public speaking is not my cup of tea and I'm not any good at it, still....I want to do something for the community...so think, think, think!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
The very first step I am going to take is growing as much of my own food as I can, organically and heirloom varieties whenever I can manage.
My neighbor is being converted to the Farmgirl side, so I am going to be working on helping her as well. I am going to follow your leads and contact the extension agency to see if there is the possibility of having or even putting on a class about the value of organics and heirlooms!

I was looking through my university ag extensions and didn't see much in the way of organic info and nothing about heirlooms for the home gardener, still have to find info on farming in the area. I think in the long run, I would like to see more bulletins about these subjects. So, I need to write to the schools and encourage them to publish more information about organic and heirloom plants and gardening. Also, I would like to do personal research and web publish my own paper about heirlooms and their importance in the garden and in farming.
It is unthinkable to me to consider the extinction of so many plants and varieties.

OH NO!!!!! I don't know if you all can be left alone for a moment :) hahah, hey Karen, Preach away girlfriend. Well about the whole typing thing, I am dyslexic and our Queen Bee catches me all the time in little spelling blunders~ SO I will beg forgiveness right now.. I just tell everyone one side of my brain is faster then the other................So a "speller" I am not, but passion comes in spades.
I am literally leaving right now for a slowfoodusa meeting.. I will add more info when I get home~ But check it out at www.slowfoodusa.org
You all ROCK~ cannot wait to get caught up when I get home... OH and welcome Alee, we have been waiting for you girl! I couldn't ask for a better group of women to be learning from and with.

Okay Annika. Then that is your deal. You DO sound more proficient in it than I!Everytime I step away from the computer (because I HAVE to!) there is another page...tee hee. This henhouse is cackling! I'm working on stats since that's my "thing". I dont talk about anything unless I've researched it first! Okay, for starters, who has saved seed from this year? Do we want to plan a chapter seed swap for after Christmas/Holidays? We could kinda do our own community garden with what we share with eachother as well. Farmgirl Friendship Gardens... fun huh? For those of you who live on the west coast, you have a few more hours to brainstorm.... for this farmgirl its chore time and then to bed. I swear.... I am turning my computer off......now! G'night!

I saved some cantaloupe seed, but I have no idea if the cantaloupe was organic or heirloom, so I think I will toss them away. Unfortunately my garden didn't do very well and I have no idea if any of it was organic and I know none of it was heirloom! Yikes!
Lets start a "Wanted" list. Then perhaps the list mum could list who has each plant. Then the people who want it can send or post a "Deeredawn could you please send me X seeds and I will trade fabric, Y seeds etc?"
What do you think?

Only thing I'll have is apple seeds and wild rose hips, neither of these things do I know how to grow...yet, but I'm going to try and see if I can get some sprouting to happen. I also have wild plum trees in my yard and there are a lot of plum pits. I'm sure that these things are worthy of growing but I don't know what counts as an heirloom and what doesn't. I'm rambling on now :P

Wow - you miss reading a topic for a couple of days and look what happens - 6 pages!! Heirloom seed preservation is something that I feel really strongly about too - I just got the Seed Savers 2008 catalog in the mail. It will be a year before I have any seeds to exchange but I would really like to be in on this project too - strength in numbers!! I will e-mail Sunny and look forward to talking with all of you about this:) Oh and I have elderberries in my backyard so I could certainly share those if I figure out where the seeds are:D Talk to you all soon Amy Grace

Hi Mavens! I've emailed Sunny to include me in this fabu group! I once read this quote.."Anything Monsanto is up to you can bet it isn't any good for you." I would love to see that giant fall. Did you know that any corn or corn products that are common to buy in supermarket are gmso? What is really bad, is that they have been for years, but companies fight to keep that knowledge off the labels because people don't want to eat the stuff. I love, love all the cutsey stuff connected with MJ, but this is the area that fires me up.

Good morning Mavens! I have an idea for a chapter badge for us if you'all are interested. I also just wanted to say how honored and blessed I feel to be on the ground floor of this amazing new chapter. We'll have buckets of fun, but we'll be doing some very serious work here. I hope you'all realize there will be resistance from some areas and the name of the game is educate, educate, educate. I could hardly sleep last night thinking about all the possibilites that this chapter is going to allow. So exciting! Dawn your first annual get together sounds grand. Don't know if I can come, first I thought there's no way, but the more I think on it maybe I will find a way. We'll see. I've never been that far "back East." LOL

WOW. Ya'll are amazing. Alee: I agree with the "wanted" list. Do you want to be in charge of that? I think it'd be great if everybody has a role.... that way we know EXACTLY who to go to for that info... Teresa Sue: If you caome east, you can camp or stay here. the farm market wont be open yet, so maybe i will set up a mini outpost in there..... I will keep my eyes open for bunkbeds!oh! I want to see that badge idea!! Rene: you feel a ripple? I'm thinking.. TIDAL WAVE!!! Amy Grace: i want some elderberries.
Girls: I have wild plum starters, a pear tree and an apple tree althought not sure what kind. I have pineapple (yellow) tomato seeds as well as Mr. Stripey and Mountain Fresh. Keep it all coming! Wow, what an amazing circle we have here!

Dawn- I am honored that you want me to be the list mum, but honestly right now I think I have too much on my plate to be a good one. Perhaps someone else would be able to give more time to the project? If not, I will be honored to do it, but I might not be able to get the first draft done until after October 10th.
October 10th is D-Day for me. I have some classes that I don't have books for yet, however deadlines in those classes are coming up and Midterms start October 10th. Yikes!

I didn't save any of my seed this year, but I am just now harvesting tomatos so I can get some of those. I'll see what else is in the garden that I can salvage. Maybe a few beans. Everyone is brainstorming up ideas this is great. I have been busy the last few days memorizing my star part before today's meeting. After today I can spare some brain to brainstorm too.

Uh oh... Teresa, my hubby tractor pulls, we have several tractors and he knows a LOT of people with vintage ones....maybe a combined trip? Stay longer and i will take you to the largest Amish community in America... Alee: I UNDERSTAND. So who else wants to keep a list of available seed? Lillian, so happy to have you on board. Ah...fun times!
