I think the schools should be able to take kids to a farm and show them where things that you eat come from. Can you imagine living in a big city eating eggs, but never seen a chicken. When I retire, I want kids to come to my farm and see animals and a garden, pull a carrot up and eat it. Vicki

Definitely Victoria or have gardens on the school grounds where they can grow some of the food for their lunches. The kids who visit your farm would have a fabulous time - I know there have been lots of projects where kids grow their own veggies, and lo and behold, they like to eat them. Hmmm

Hi Ladies!

So I was just thinking- Did anyone look at the endangered seed list this year before planting?

I have to admit that for pricing reasons, I decided to use up the last of my "unknown origin" seeds, but I did pick up some heirloom seeds from a local seed company.

Annika- I think at one time you had found a great link that listed the most critical endangered plants?

Alee - I didn't check before I started this year, I did do about 90% heirlooms though. It seems like Annika did have a link - I will see if I can do some research

Thanks ladies! Maybe if we have a row left in our gardens we still have time to pick an endangered plant- what do you think? :D

I know, crazy, right? I wish I could get seeds for it! I can just imagine when this was all tall prairie grass dotted with beautiful white orchids. I am going to try to contact a preservation society about these flowers as I think I have a perfect place for them to be planted. I would have to talk to the land owner but it runs wild and is an island most of the year

I agree! I want one so bad. My horse barn owns two islands where wild grasses grow and the islands are undisturbed. I wonder if they would give me some to plant as a restoration spot. It makes me sad that such beautiful plants just cease to exist with out a huge uproar. I need to buy some land so I can just plant it full of endangered species!!

Barbara Kingsolver's book "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" is a great read. On the cover is a photo of an heirloom bean called the Christmas bean - a beautiful red and white striped lima-bean-sized bean. They're yummy. This is my first time on the forum and I know that I will be back.

Can you get to the orchids Alee? I'm thinking you could harvest some seeds from them yourself if the landowner doesn't mind.

Oh Denise- unfortunatly they don't grow here anymore. I am hoping to someday get seeds from a conservation society to plant, but no go yet.

Alee,
I'm sorry, when I read your post I thought they were near you but not on your property.
I hope you can get them, they really are quite stunning!

Oooh, that orchid is beautiful!

I love pretty stuff that's hardy and that I can ignore (like, oh, say, our lilacs, lilies, rhubarb, raspberries, apple trees, and so on - I'm in the weird camp of letting Mother Nature prune when I don't feel like it).

Lanna - oh my goodness where have you been? How are you?
Anyhow, I feel the same way about pruning - my lilacs definitely prove that:)

I've been busy.
Basically a single mom of four (6.5yo, 4yo, 23mo, 3mo) since hubby's working 400 miles away.
Add in trying to clean/pack to get our house on the market (still!), sort of homeschooling, the garden (at least to make it pretty enough to show happily and me digging up enough stuff in pots to start the next garden wherever I land), and day to day stuff, yeah. I need four of me. If you want to come up to help or know someone looking to buy a great little suburban homestead up here, let me know.

And for something fun, my little one was born at home as planned, but on the toilet. Which wasn't exactly planned. Heh. So far he really digs water, so go figure.
