Hey Ladies, can you believe that Friday will mark the one year anniversary of the Heirloom Mavens? Any suggestions on what to do to celebrate? I'm just in awe of the time. Look at the bonds that have been created. Look at the knowledge and education that's been shared. Look at the lessons learned and the harvests.....harvested./ lol.... I'm amazed. We are over 40 members strong! So cool!

LOL Diana - that made me laugh hard!! What song do you think?? Yup - the first frost was last night, I had a feeling it was going to and sure enough - it didn't kill everything though, I think I have a couple days to harvest stuff Makes me kinda sad though, I wasn't ready for summer to end!! We've had two frosts and I pulled out all the green beans, some squash plants and some of the tomatoes frosted but am hoping we can still salvage some of them. Suppose to warm back up into the high 80's all next week. I have'nt even gotton any pears off my tree so really don't need any more frost. Amy I'm with you, I am not ready for summer to end.

Congrats on one year Mavens! Hope I can contribute better next year as I did'nt have much luck with saving many seeds this year. Tomatoes never really ripened, most other veggies bolted early and I just put the co op garden to rest. Spent couple hours pulling out plants and weeding the area so that the garden is back to scratch. Will just be waiting on pumpkins to ripen soon. Hope to have a better one for next year as this one was fun to watch things grow and be able to harvest and share with so many people, but could use more help in the garden if we have one this size again. Maybe Mother Nature will be kind next summer to all of us. Happy Harvesting.

Ladies, when you have time, if you could please take a moment to read the Bulletin Board in the henhouse. Thank you!

Glad you will still be with the mavens Dawn. Sometimes we all can just get to much on our plate and we need to let go of some things. You have done a wonderful job and we love ya for it!

Likewise here Dawn - sometimes you need to regroup and take care of yourself, or explore other directions. I think that is what we were all looking for here anyway was the spark to change things/ourselves and to learn more about some things that were being lost. It sounds like with the other avenues you are exploring that you are truly embodying the maven spirit. You have lent a lot to this group with your energy and passion. Thank you!! Amy Grace

When I found out that there are only a tiny percentage of APPLE TREES left...I cried. A century ago there were so many beautiful species. Most of them are gone forever now. Hardly anyone noticed.
I'm so glad this is being brought to our attention now...this subject NEEDS the attention. I can't wait to plant my endangered heirloom seeds come spring! When I finally find my homestead (it's out there waiting for me somewhere), my husband and I plan on keeping a few chickens from that endangered list as well. The Buckeye, The Dominique.

Laura- I agree- It's so sad that we have lost so many wonderful species of so many different plants and animals. It surprises me every day that people don't realize that our food sources are bottlenecking. Allergies are on the rise- I wonder what will happen when our society as a whole becomes allergic to certain food sources- say Corn for example or wheat!

It is sad but if we all do just a little part to bring back species or maintain what we have then as a whole we are doing A LOT! That's the part that counts in this quest!!!

I was shocked when I bnought carrots and they were at least 18 inches long.I know that I will have 2x the amount in my garden this year. That is not natural.
On a lighter note I got some Morning Glory seeds from someone on here and they were BEAUTIFUL I saved the seeds and have some to share.

I'm jumping in very late to this forum, but if you haven't read anything by Michael Pollan, please do! He writes passionately and knowledgeably about food and farming and his books are easy to digest (no pun intended). Some suggestions are The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food. He has a new book just published, but I'm not sure of the title.
