Amanda, our Ace hardware buys local, too. She always has the prettiest plants around, too. She hires someone just to be outside and water and help customers all day. She a bit pricey, but her plants are way better cared for and healthier than any one elses around here.
Marcy, it's so warm here I have to open the cold frame. It's working out great so far. I have my seed trays and the plants I bought hanging out in it now til the ground is ready for them. My hubby went out with the tiller this morning and tried to til up a row, but got it stuck. It's just been turned and not tilled yet. But I wanted to get the potatoes and onions in the ground. But will have to wait a little longer now.

Today I planted my five remaining strawberry plants. I think I must have missed one at the old house. Oh well. If I did, I hope it lives and maybe someday that yard will be full of wild strawberries!

I got my first harvest of the year!! I'm so excited/happy. Especially since I'm a chilly zone 5.
The kids were outside messing around in the hard slush and mud (oh, the mud), so I went out to inspect things. Did some poking around in the salad bed, and found my carrots. The snow has finally started melting from all the rain, so I hauled out a trowel and set to shoving aside the snow. I got probably about a pound of carrots, maybe a little more. Yeehaw!! And discovered the yellow ones kick serious rear with 1.25" diameter and 5-6" in length, the purple ones are dismal in my soil/climate, the white ones do a mushy/fungus thing despite getting nice and long, and the orange ones are short but fat. I'm making carrot cake tomorrow. Teehee.
Besides that, I have broccoli and cauliflower sprouts doing fun stuff in the pantry (where my seed starting shelves are). So far, Umpqua Broccoli is impressing me - we'll see if it continues.

Lanna- That is awesome!
I am hoping to be able to dig in my garden today. Yesterday Nora and I took a 2 mile walk, so today I think we will take a slightly shorter walk to go buy some seeds!

How did I miss this thread?! And will I ever be able to read all 300+ pages of it?! Sigh! We live in town on just a bit of land but for the past three years I have planted a small garden in the raised beds my hubby made. This year I want to try square foot gardening because I want to grow as much as possible in that small space. I am also planting strawberries for the first time. I've started my heirloom tomato seeds indoors already and some have sprouted so that gives me hope. Anyone else do squarefoot gardening and does it work? -Elizabeth |

Elizabeth, I do it but I can't tell you if it works because I just started! Rene is a veteran though. :D
My heirloom 'maters are coming up too. Wheee!
I think this weekend I might just drag all my wintersown seedlings into the garage and leave them there, since I will be out of town and we might actually get snow (!) on Saturday night. They already decided to up and sprout, so I'd hate to lose them all. Going to have to figure out how to cover my other plants, too, my peas and lettuce, that are already in the bed? Yes?
Lanna, congrats on the carrots. Mmmm... cake...

The peas and lettuce can take some cold. Now that I've told you that, they'll freeze and you'll be mad at me, lol!!!

TS I'll let you know next week how mad at you I am! ;-)
Happy gardening, y'all. I'm heading home for the day and NOT turning my computer on at home.

I've got seedlings sprouting out the ying yang and I'm so excited! If I felt better I might do the happy dance!! Now if I can just get them to the garden without them dampening off. It seems like that's the hardest part about starting seeds inside. I've got a fan blowing in their direction and sprinkled cinnamon on them tonight. So I hope that works. (Keep your fingers crossed for me!) Also has anyone had trouble with watering your seedlings from the bottom? It's like they either get to much or not enough water. So I've just been watering from the top. Well, I've been on my death bed so I'm gonna head back to it now! Tammy

Oh No Tammy! I hope you feel better soon!
With my seedlings I try to move them as close to a cool window a few weeks before as I can- even opening the window during the day and closing it at night. Then I try to move them outside for a few days before transplanting them. That usually works too.

I just use my peri bottle leftover from all the babies. So I can gently squirt water right on the soil and not get the plant stems/leaves soaked. I know it sounds weird, but hey, I'm all about re-purposing things.

I have my seeds planted for the garden. I have all my trays and cups lined up under the light. I can't wait to see things growing. We can't usually plant things outside until early May. I hope by then I have some nice seedlings. Once they have germinated and sprouted I will put them in the greenhouse we built. I can't wait. It's been busy here. I do need to plant my flower seeds. I only did veggies and gourds yesterday. All of my seeds are from Seed Savers. Hubby built a huge structure from pvc that he wants to wrap chicken wire around to keep the squirrels and rabbits out of the garden. I will have to post pictures when it's finished. Ruth

I started some lettuce and radish outside yesterday. It's suppose to be 60 today. yippee. My seeds starts indoors are looking great. I think I may just have to go out and plant at the other garden that was loaned to us. Have a great day everyone.

Kelley, I started the swiss chard in cups yesterday. How long does it take to come up? I will direct seed the rest in the garden when it gets warmer. I might start the basil in pots, though. Thanks again. I'll see what I can come up with to send you. It's going to take a month to dry all this mud up so we can til the garden. It's awful. Up past my ankles in mud. Yuck!

Today it is snowing- again. It was supposed to be nice this week, but I guess another artic front got blown down. So my plans of digging my garden this week are foiled once again. I hate having to wait until the ground is "workable" right now it is more the consistency of play dough or wet clay than chocolate cake...:(
