When I transplant my Cucumbers and squash I put a large glass jar over them and they have done well. I have done this for years.

ohhhh Diana has the magic touch! Well, goes to show that anything can be done I suppose. I've got a picnic sized folding table full of planted material just waiting for my lab and heeler to knock over while playing ball inside the house!

Thanks for the list Ruth, so great...I just love it. I had never seen a list like this so I will use it.
Amanada..I do soak everything....If I am going to put the germinated seed into a "cold frame". I make sure that "cold frame" has had the lid down and the temp is as warm as it can be. It makes sense to me that the germinated seed is a little more "vunerable", as it has its protective layer gone.

Guess what ladies! I am moving to a place where they don't mind if I put in a big veg garden! AND it had an established and producing apple tree in the back yard! I am so excited! I can't wait to see what kind of apples I get!

Cheryl- just down the road about 10 miles to a town called Laurel. It is a safer area than where we live right now and a better rental. It will be SOOOO nice. It's a 3 bedroom house with a workshop/garage in the backyard, the landlord is going to fence the backyard as soon as the ground thaws, apple tree, room for a veg garden, Oh and the last owners of the property left behind a great backyard toy set with a huge slide! Nora already loves it!!

Ruth, thanks for the list! Very helpful.
Diana, why the glass jar for the transplanting? Are we talking like wide-mouth quart sized mason jar, or industrial sized jar of pickles jar?
Rene I am gonna have to try this soaking thing. It's stupposed to be really warm the next few days so that might help get them up to temp.
Alee that's fantastic about your new house. :D
G'night y'all.

Congrats Alee!
Ruth - will be checking that book out from the library - very interesting about the transplanting.
That loud whoosh of air you heard yesterday was a sigh of relief as future potato farmer DS and I got our dirt on! Yes, we started a bunch of stuff yesterday in our little milk jug greenhouses: 2 different lettuces, wheatgrass and alfalfa for our bunnies, parsley, basil, peppermint, lemon balm and oregano (in drinking water bottles). Oh, it felt soooo goooood to be out in the sun with our hands in some soil (even though it was only potting soil from a bag). We also turned over the layer of bunny beans and leaves that accumulated over the winter on the two existing garden beds. The first 1/2-1" of soil was defrosted so it got mixed in as well. Hopefully, with a darker layer on top, the soil will thaw a bit faster.
I followed up on my promise to myself to make a detailed inventory of my seeds (and thanks to all of you who have sent me seeds either for friendship or barter!), which not only includes the name, but also the dates to start, transplant/plant, and harvest. I also included room to write any notes. Thank God for Excel! I've been going over my Carrots Love Tomatoes and Four Season Harvest books to start planning our garden beds for succession and companion planting. I thought I would only have 3, but I think I may do one master, then use up some transparency paper I have to make overlays, and be sure to put the dates on them.
Today, DD the flower gardener will get her chance to play in the dirt. We will be starting to soak the milkweed seeds, and planting some catnip in the water bottle like our other herbs. Oh, and of course, Mom will be joining her.
Anyway, DS is calling from upstairs for help with math, and we need to get our little greenhouses out into the sun. Have a great day everyone!

Oh, Ann, so much fun! Doesn't it feel great to have your hands back in the dirt?
Last night I cleaned out the garage - for, like, hours! - and dealt with a bunch of the BF's junk - I mean treasures - and I feel much better now. Can probably actually WORK in there now! Hooked up my radio. That helps.
If I start some seeds indoors do you y'all think that I could get away with using the clamp-on lamps instead of the long flourescents? I am probably only going to start a few things indoors, pretty much everything else I will start outside either direct sow or winter sow. I have two of those lamps. BF didn't get the flourescents hung before he moved and I don't want to mess with them if I don't have to.
Next Wednesday is recycling day so I am going to go scrounge the neighborhood for more 2-liters and milk jugs. :D
I'm contemplating getting some chickens. Should I go for it?
Happy FRIDAY!

Alee my cucs and squash get a wide mouth mason jar over them so they get a good start when I transplant. If I don't they always seem to die. So for a bout a week I put jars on them

Ann, where do you get your wheatgrass and alfalfa seed? We always have bunnies and I would like to try and grow some. And I also made a detailed seed list in my Garden Journal. I put the seed name and the person who sent it to me. I would never remember if I hadn't. Great minds think alike!

Woo hoo, Rene, new newsletter's lookin' GOOD!
I am "borrowing" an old three ring binder from work - one of the white ones with the clear sleeves on the outside - and I'm going to use some of that funky scrapbook paper I have leftover to make a cover. This shall become my garden journal of sorts.
:D
Happy Friday! I'm done wasting precious daylight in teh office.

HI girls! Its like music to my ears to hear the chatter of garden ideas. All of you have such wonderful ideas and plans. I am going to get some plastic cups today to transplant my peas into... Good greif. I learned my lesson there, they are HUGE!
Alee: the new place sounds homey and great. I wish you NO stress during the move! A slide for Nora, how fun! Wish I could ride down it with her! I love playing!
I have a 'recipe' for recycled roses done with mason jars... I will have to find it and post it for you all. Its not really heirloom but neat nonetheless.
Its a rainy 60 degrees here in Ohio and I'm loving every bit of it. Too wet to get in the ground, but springs a comin!
Have a great day ladies.

Hi girls!
Got nearly all my seeds sown last night - finishing up the rest this afternoon - YAAAYYYY!!!! I'm so excited!
And hung the netting on my SFG vertical frame. Look out, spring's a-comin'!
Have a great day y'all, I have to get back out there and play with my dirt some more.

I get my wheatgrass and alfalfa seeds from SproutMan. I ordered them when I bought a sprouter. We never cared for them ourselves, but when they grow in the dirt, they make EXCELLENT food for our little bunny foo-foos. I also ordered red clover seed from them, but ran out this spring (AGH!) and have to order more.
Amanda, you will have to let me know how the vertical gardening goes for you. We are putting our viney things on angled pallets for more support. Guy down the road from us works for a stone company and the company throws them away (!). After I saw a garden like ours in Mother Earth with the pallets supporting the viney things, I KNEW we had to find a way to work with our neighbor to get some. That same guy started a little tiny garden last year, and he was very interested in SFG, and especially the part about the viney things on pallets. His family uses them to build bonfires.
Anyway, blessings to all!

Well I received my first heirloom seeds for SSE. Can't wait till this snow quits coming and spring finally gets here. So of course I am dreaming of starting some seeds indoors, maybe in two more weeks. In the meantime I am reading "Carrots Love Tomatoes" and "Gardening with Heirloom Seeds". I only hope I do my seeds justice so I will be able to save and share them. Until then I will learn what I can from you gals that have been doing this for sometime.

Man it was a busy weekend! I planted several different kinds of lettuce, spinach, geen onions, white onions and shallots in my raised beds. Got compost on the ones I haven't planted in yet and started several tomato, sunflower, and hibiscus seeds inside. So now I'm ready to pass out!

was able to find a few seeds I had wanted for a while...currant bush seeds..some dwarf wild huckleberry seeds, and seeds for a pretty heirloom vine called exotic love vine...and seeds for a flower called butterfly wings...yay..yeah..I'm addicted...badly. bought mulch the other day to replenish the flower beds in the backyard...will move the large clumps of flowers that have not bloomed yet...out of what used to be the cottage garden...and use those to fill in the mulched flower beds..it will save a lot on not having to go buy flowers to fill in the flower beds. ------------ oh..and I had an aha idea..you know I mentioned saving some of those plastic shelving units that folks use in their garages to store things on as a grow light seed starting shelf/by hanging a couple of small flourescent lights suspended by chain from them?? ...well I thought of another great gardening use for them... hot glue velcro around the top edge of a shelving unit. Then get some thick mil clear plastic..and measure it to go around the entire edge of the shelving unit to where it meets in the middle..and measure all the way to the floor, cut out the plastic sheeting and along the top edge sew velcro. You'll want it cut straight down the middle in the front, so that you can open up the front of the unit. You'll have created a "curtained" mini green house...just use clothespins to pin back the front to either side when you want to increase the air circulation. A cheap mini green house...whoot whoot! yeah! (I have 4 of these units that we had in the garage..hmm..me thinks I'm going to "confiscate them..bwuhaha.)
