Finally getting an opportunity to post. Dh and I are planning on watching the dvd we got for SFG. Looking through and ordering the seeds. Not sure what we are doing this year. It has been 4 years since we've had a garden and never have done SF so lots new to us I'm sure. I at least have him looking at the heirlooms and organic seeds. Hope everyone is getting their planning in place.

Denise - you will LOVE SFG! I can't imagine doing my garden any other way. The system makes so much practical sense, and for us at least, it makes gardening something my kids enjoy - last summer they even argued over who waters! I have recommended the book to 2 of my friends, and I'm hoping to corrupt - I mean persuade - some more to try it as well.

I love love love SFG too, which is funny because I haven't even planted a thing yet. But it made the "planning for a garden" stage SO much more manageable.
I feel like I am very, very late in winter sowing my seeds, since it's supposed to be in the 70s this week. Pete's moving to California really disrupted my seed-sowing plans, but I'm playing catch-up this weekend.
I suppose I will still go ahead with my "ghetto garden" mini-coldframe winter sowing approach.
Anyone have any advice??????
We're now exactly 6 weeks out from projected Last Frost Date - ahem, April 15, my birthday :D
Was planning to start some 'maters and eggplant and half my morning glories indoors and just winter sow the rest. Now I feel like I'm behind!!! Help!!!

Hi Mavens!! Dawn--I have some onions I can trade you for some Zukes????? And I had an ok birthday Thanks for asking!!! I too am planning on being there for spring fling...wouldnt miss it!!!
Lora--good to hear your voice!!!!
Rene--I have been thinking about SFG but the library is "cleaning" and wouldnt ya know it--they moved my gardening section!!! I think they should have asked first!!! And thanks for the nameplate and goodies--I proudly showed them off to DH....asked him if he ever had one of those?? He's a bookworm tooo!!!! It was a personal nanananabooboo moment!!!
My tulips are trying to come up and so is my garlic!!! I have a holly hock plant but its still too cold to see any greens on it! And I like the history of it!!
I hope to be planning my garden soon and starting a few seeds just concerned about keeping the soil temp up without spending money for a heater. If I clear off the top of the freezer and fridge it might work there but then where o where will I put all the plants that currently reside there?? I will put my thinking cap on!!
Have a great day!!!

Hey Kristin, Sorry.. SFG stands for Square Foot Gardening.. and you can learn more at www.squarefootgardener.com it is a gardening system that makes (in my opinion) gardening so much easier and more "fruitful". Let me know what you think.. I would give Baker Creek a call or email them.. WHO can be without their catalog? LOL They must have a 911, right?

YAWN!
I am so tired today. I've been flying since 7am. Went to breakfast with hubby (blueberry pancakes and bacon...mmm mmm good!) then to hatchery for feed and chick stuff, then to Home Depot for new coop lights, and I picked up a fern... I know, I know, it MAY or MAY NOT be heirloom, but I have a very shady front of the house where NOTHING grows.... so ferns it is. Then it was to TSC where I got the cutest farmgirl tshirt. It says "What she says goes....A Farmers Wife... A Better Breed of Woman" and its got a vintage pic (ca. 1950's) of a woman throwing scratch to the hens. I love it. They also had a shirt that said "Cool Chick" with a really cute chick/cracked egg on front. Anyhoo, I got chicky litter and some ether for the tractors. Then I picked up some extra towells for my 'May guests'. Mine are falling apart. I may take a tip from the Big Queen herself, and designate towells for everyone to use.
I still need a head count for SF. So far its Lora, Kelley...er.... Muffin and Biscuit and Marcy, Rene?, whatever happened to Sue? And I also need a food list as to what you would like for me to have one hand. Lora, I got your diet coke!!!
Marcy: Yes, I will trade some zukes for onion. You want dark green or yellow? Both?
I went ahead and started just about everything that I could start now. I figured the 6 week mark too. And was trying to get ahead of the game for SF. Any suggestions on what to sell the plants in?? I dont' wanna give all my terra cotta pots away. I need something disposable.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that a local nursery up this way has a good selction of perennials available before the shindig. This farm is a very ugly shade of brown when nothings bloomin!
Okay, I better git while the gitten's good. My eyes are droopy.
Later girls. And thank you for everything.

Dawn, I also have a bunch of 3 inch plastics too.....and, what do you want me to bring food wise to SF???.....Do you have a big comercial nursery near you? Sometimes they will sell you bulk plastic containers, or they may even Donate them if it's for a good cause since they can get a write off, just an idea....One time I called a hospital to ask for old surgical scrubs for a summer mission trip, and they "donated" 5 huge plastic bags of them!!!!
Amanda, it's not too late to wintersow, so don't stress.....I'll never forget spring break '2001 when I lived in Tulsa.....3 1/2 ft of snow in 2 days....then followed by a hard freeze the first week of april....and don't worry, I still haven't even started mine, but since DH has to work Sat, I've decided that's when I'll do mine!! |

Hi Amanda, I am envious of the warm weather. If you plant directly outide, if you soak your seeds before planting~ the germination will force the plants to come up faster . I like the cold frame,as you can lower the "lid" if the weather requires, but can raise it as well if not needed. I have applied windows to several of the boxes, giving me the flexibility.
Dawn.... why is there a question mark next to my name for spring break? Short of the sky falling, I am so there......
Marcy JO while you are waiting for the library to et re-organized, check out the SQ FT gardener website above... there is a lot of info there...
Good Morning everyone else......We have another cloudy, rainy day....GREY....I swear I am abut ready to replace all the light bulbs in my house with grow lights just for the "sun effect"......

Hey girls,
Kelley I'll be right there with ya on Saturday - finally getting the rest of them started. it's supposed to be 84 (!!) degrees today! Thanks for the advice. I'm going to go ahead and do it.
Got a wild hair this morning while I was watering and planted some nasturtium seeds in the same ol' pot they were in last year. Just couldn't stand it any longer, had to plant SOMETHING! It's a pretty big pot and nasturtiums are pretty hardy, so if we do get another hard freeze I guess I can just throw a blanket over them.
Dawn you can also get a few sleeves of plastic party cups and poke holes in the bottom if you get desperate. If you get #1s or #2s they're also recyclable in most places.
Happy Thursday, y'all. I am SO excited for 5:00 pm tomorrow. Too nice out to be stuck in an office.

The little poster thingy came from a website: pathtofreedom.com
Everyone should check out their website. It's really an eye opener. Anyway, I just copied their picture, then used the jpg on photobucket to get it into the format to put in my tagline. I have emailed them and let them know I am doing this. Never heard a "no" back, so if or until I hear otherwise, it stays. I'm proud to use my hands as weapons of mass creation!

Ann, I love your tag too! Will check out the website.
Rene we must have been posting at the same time. THANKS for the encouragement! Do you soak everything, or just certain things? The only things I had planned to direct sow were flowers - I had planned on winter sowing everything else into my goofy homemade containers - of course didn't get to it and am finally doing that this weekend.
Are there some veggies that don't like to be transplanted? Anyone know off the top of your head? I will have to consult Carrots Love Tomatoes after work. :-)
Dawn I am doing some of my winter sowing in yogurt cups (the BF saves them religiously) and then my roommate had a party and had a bunch of plastic cups left over, so genius (ha! ha!) struck.
I will most likely NOT be able to come to Spring Fling, and I am bummed about it. But the BF's long weekends are very few and far between (and we are very far apart) since he's just started his new job, and he really wants me to come see him that weekend.

Amanda, There probably are some plants that dont like to be transplanted, but if they are planted into the same soil type then they should all be ok. As far as seed soaking. I soak everything that is going into direct planting.. somethings I just soak longer. ( example: corn).. Again, so jealous of the warm, sunshine you all are having...... I think the sun is trying to peak out this am..... or maybe it is all in my mind.... UGH!

Thanks!
Question: when you have a bunch of stuff in the cold-frame, do you take the lid completely OFF if it gets hot outside?
I'm thinking I might ditch the yogurt cups (or use them indoors) and just use the baggie method for starting my seeds - http://wintersown.org/wseo1/Winter_Sowing_in_a_Baggie.html so I can open them and close them easily - though having to do that one at a time might be a pain?
Otherwise I was planning on basically tying a dry cleaning bag around the plastic trays that hold my yogurt cups. I'm afraid the little buggers will fry on hot days and I'll murder the plastic bags trying to get them open.
Yes, I am overthinking this. First-time anxiety!!! Y'all sick of hearing about winter sowing yet?
Think of me when it's 102 degrees and humid. :-)
I was all excited when I bought a convertible, thinking I could use it for three seasons here in Tulsa - nope, it's pretty much spring and fall only and the thing is insufferable during the summer!

Rene do you soak the stuff you put in your cold frames too? (I know, duh... newbie)
I'm using Mel's Mix for all this stuff
