I found another source of wheat seeds and also timothy and red clover (sorry, these are for our rabbits). The wheat description in their catalog says it is a good bread wheat as well.

www.woodprairie.com

We get our seed potatoes from them, and they are very nice folks. They do not use GMOs and they are certified organic as well.

I dig the mini-greenhouse idea Tina Michelle! Hmmm... the BF has been pawning furniture off on me including several garage shelves I really don't want... they suddenly seem more appealing to me!

So far, lots of things are sprouting in my ghetto greenhouses. :D Though i suspect I have killed off the things I was attempting to start indoors. I get confused about that - should I keep them in the dark until they sprout and just give them light after they sprout? Will it be OK to give them light from the get-go? The lights are pretty much my source of heat.

It's mostly tomatoes, but there are also some hollyhocks in there that I am starting indoors so that they'll maybe bloom the first year. They apparently need light to germinate.

Ack!

Thanks Ann for the sources. I think I'm gonna grow some for my bunnies. They love clover so I bet they will love extra treats!

Ok, novice gardener question! (again...)

Did the winter sowing thing - so far, milk jugs get a thumbs-up and yogurt cups stink.

But I *did* start that one flat inside - using the handy-dandy 72-cell magical greenhouse kit and my own Mel's Mix - I think it was just plain way too wet, or else the thing didn't drain like it was supposed to - the lid wasn't on tight, but when I opened them up the next morning to check on them, they were starting to get some fuzz. This cannot be good.

Took 'em outside (nice sunny day) to air out all afternoon.

They're already under lights though they've not yet sprouted, because that's my primary source of warmth for these guys. The lights shouldn't hurt them, right?

But the fuzzy moldy stuff sure might!

Should I chuck 'em and start over, or do you think they might sprout anyway? I don't want to waste 10 days of electricity if they're dead in the water. I keep reading about damping off.

The little cells looked much better after their day of sunshine and lid-less-ness. Gonna check on them again when I get home from work.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I got some fuzzy's too. The organic soil mix I used turned fuzzy. The Miracle grow that dh picked up did not. Hmmm..... I'm not a big fan of all organic stuff, but I ain't all against it either... so mine are lid less now too. I will await suggestions as well.. Tina may know the answer to this. She's a great gardener!

I have Sweet Annie out the wazoo! I order mine from Baker Creek and its like a mad scientific experiement gone awry! I will have sweet annie everywhere this year!

Have a great day tomorrow ladies. Think of me in chicken you-know-where!!!

ok....in my past experience with starting seeds, this is what happened.....

EVERYTIME I used any type of regular potting soil .... all my seedlings would do exactly what ya'lls (dawn and Amanda) are doing.....then a couple years ago I read about starting seeds with STERILE SEED STARTING MIX only....and Voila!!!! No more mildew, damping off, or seedlings dying.

Now, when I first saw the sterile seed starting mix, i thought to myself...how on earth can a seed sprout in this stuff?.....but they did! And....i did still have some fatalities, but that's when I realized that it was because i was watering from the top, instead of the bottom.
After the seedlings are a couple inches tall and look good and healthy, I would take the little peat pot it was in and set it in a bigger container and fill around it with regular (purchased) gardening soil..

Yes, yes, shame on me, but our soil at the time was HARD clay!!!

then, about 3 weeks later, the plants were ready to put in the garden, and since some were still fragile, we took Dr.Pepper and coke bottles (2 liter) cut the tops and bottoms off and stuck them over them for extra protection! Worked like a charm!

So, if ya'll ARE using sterile seeds starting mixes and are getting the fuzzies, its probably just too humid because of air circulation. Try putting one of those ity bity plastic dorm sized fans somewhere in the near area, but not too close, and just leave it on low to circulate a bit of air, but not too close! I learned that lesson the hard way!...lol...

Have you all seen this???? Now the Gov. and Big agriculture is trying to make it illegal to garden. Small farms and farmers markets will become illegal too if this bill passes
go read! Write your congressman! Make big noise.

I am so glad my congress people and representatives are not on the list of co-sponsors. I will write them a HUGE thank you and with the subtext of "Don't you dare support this!" And I think I will write every one of those co-supporters and tell them exactly how I feel.

Let's remind them that Victory Gardens got this Nation through several wars when food was limited. Oh and it is how most people fed their families through the depression. With us facing an unending war in the Middle East and facing this economic situation- making it illegal to "Transport food" and to home slaughter animals is ridiculous. I didn't read through the whole thing yet, but if you go to the Bill's website you can skip down to the "Prohibited Actions" part which shows you exactly what would be a punishable action and I don't like it one bit.

thanks annika, have been reading over it.....kinda makes me wonder "just how free are we in this "land of the free" we live in?????

On a lighter note...I have been reading Earthly Delights by Rosalind Creasy in my spare time these last couple of days, and in a section about Heirlooms she mentions a couple of book titles that I thought I would pass on to those of you who may want to check them out

The Heirloom Gardener by Carolyn Jabs: Sierra Book Clubs 1984
Plant Extinction - A Global Crisis by Harold Koopowitz: Stonewall Press 1983

oh, and though we are enjoying warm, beautiful weather down here in the south...we are also already battling fire ants, mosquitos, and billions upon billions of aphids!!! by this time next month, it will probably be so hot and humid down here, that I'll be longing for a trip to the Rockies!!....lol

here is the actual bill. In no way does it mention the back yard home gardener. This bill covers food establishments and slaughter houses, etc. not the home gardener.

The fuzzies are from the moisture. you can very gently scrape them off. If you have a lid on your seeds then fix it where a little air can get in there. Also like Kelley said, a fan blowing in that direction can help. Fungus is a dirty word to your seedlings so you have to keep a close eye on it and remove the cover as soon as you see things sprouting. I've always just turned on my grow lights as soon as I start my seeds. I don't think it will hurt them. I posted a dampening-off tonic on my blog if anyone is interested. That's the biggest problem when you start your seeds inside. Hope this helps!

Thanks Kelley and Tammy! I hate to be wasteful but I'm thinking I'm just going to scrap this batch and start over. I have to go out of town and won't be able to keep an eye on them over the next three or four days, and I hate to waste the electricity if all I'm growing is fuzzies. I'm going to put them in my winter sowing containers and stick 'em outside with the rest of the crew, just to see if they ultimately sprout.

When I get back I'm attending an organic gardening seminar, woohoo! I think I'll give the indoor seed starting another try after that.

About that bill - I still think it will hurt organic farmers and farm markets and that the trickle-down effects will NOT be good for heirlooms...

Thanks for the fuzzy info. I cannot afford to scrap and redo. I'm running out of time as it is. Sorry that I havent been around. I've been in the hospital most of today.... fun fun. Looks like Dawny's got a bleeding ulcer. Yuck. Anyhoo..... trying to get electric into the shed. Thinking of expanding the chicken coop to encompass started pullets.... My mind is going a million miles an hour. Trying to stay alive in this economy. Should I stay at a job that is really stressful because its a JOB? or should I branch out on my own and be poor? I've already decided to cut my hours down to 3 days a week. I gotta stick it out 2 more years til dd graduates....2 more years......

Okay. I knew there was something awry about that bill. There is NO WAY the gov't can stop people from gardening. They tried to stop people from smoking and thats not working. My good friend owns a bar in Columbus and she's been fined $1000 three times for allowing people to smoke inside. So now she just raffles off OSU tickets or whatever and the $ goes in a pot for paying the smoking fines. I somehow cannot see the logic of putting garden cops on the "beet" (heehee) to puruse the neighborhood to see who's growing turnips. It doesn't make any sense at all. Its ludracris. I just read in the American Farmland Trust that the White House hired a gardener to put in a veggie yard there. No one is going to stop us from growing our own food.

Well, I gotta find a fuzzy fan. I'll catch up with ya'll later.

Been out of the loop for a while since I don't have anything gardening-related, what with the snow still dumping 3-6 inches at a time here.

Hoping to try winter-sowing some of the more cold-hardy things like onions and broccoli this week and get my indoors stuff started. But with just sickly me and my also-snot-ridden helpers since the hubby's out of town for work, it's slow, cold going (less mess if I do it in the garage).

Anybody else gotten their panties in a twist about H.R.875 and S.425? I have to wait until tomorrow and hopefully I'll have more of a voice to make all those phone calls, but still. I'm beyond mad/frustrated/etc. Apparently the calls kind of make a bigger impact than emails. So I'll do both when the room stops spinning, tomorrow hopefully.

Dawn ~ Yeah, those plastic party cups. That you always see at greek row parties. Actually works pretty well, just be careful poking the holes. Trust me.

Amanda - De-fuzz, then sprinkle on cinnamon. I kid you not.

Tina ~ The way I understand the bill is that it's quite vague so it's open to (extreme) interpretation. And farmer's markets would be SOL. I've seen my Tomato Lady's "processing" area. It's cute. But I seriously doubt her quonset hut is up to USDA's expensive standards, you know?

Morning mavens,
Sorry I have not posted . A beautiful day yesterday...I have been in Portland attending a bee keeping class. We will be receiving our first bees in May. Just in time for pollinating the garden. We have received some organic berry plants and a fig tree to plant from friends in Woodburn.. (When the ground finally thaws). Clay & I are putting the cedar siding on the chicken studio while the weater is nice.and the weather looks nice for the next week.. in the low 50s & possibly 59 by Friday.. but snow again saturday.. Enough already! I guess it is the norm here In K Falls. I have been busy meeting potential farmgirls who are interested in joining the Klamath Falls Charming Chicks... Have a great day all...

I have all my seeds and now I bought some organic seed starter, bought the trays and now I hope to get them started this weekend. We can't put anything outside in the ground until May so I am still good on time but cutting it close.

Annika~how are you? How is your dad? that new bill is horrible. I can't believe what they come up with.

Who comes up with these ideas?

Alee~congrats on your exam!

Cheryl~it's great you'll be getting bees.

I need a farm. I keep saying that~maybe some day it will come true. I so want a little farm. 5 acres and I would do a happy dance everyday!! Maybe someday.

I hope everyone is well.

Well since it's been snowing or sleeting all day I've been starting seeds inside. So I've got a couple of seed questions! Should I start leeks, swiss chard and okra inside? I haven't ever planted these before so I didn't know whether to start inside or direct seed. Hope someone knows!
