WOW, I feel like I have missed half a book.
1st forgive me that I have been a little vacant.... My husband was recently diagnosed as Diabetic, My son was deployed to Afganistan, I had a big deadline for work and, I had an emergancy root canal and..........................you know "life" just like the rest of you :), I dont really know what has gone on, and dont need to, just know this. I love this group, I love this thread..... and I cant wait for spring and to get my toes in the soil.............I have learned that we can suck the joy out of anything when we start to attach a bunch of expectations to them.....taking a cue from MaryJanes latest magazine.. maybe it is best to just "bee".... Love you all!!!

Mavens, I am like Amy Grace and Teresa Sue, I had no idea that some feelings were hurt and that we were pondering what we could say or not.
I am so sure that no harm was ever meant and that who ever got their feather brushed in the wrong way can just see it as it is, the brush of some wind.
Please, let us show our love and consideration toward eachother.
Love and big hugs as Kelley said, this hug was SO welcomed today, thanks Kelley.

Good Sunday Morning girls. Guess what I did yesterday? I went outside and gathered as many twigs and branches as possible and I made the cutest rustic garden stars that you can stick in a potted plant out of them! With the smaller pieces I hotglued them around glass votive holders for a "rustiv outdoors-y look. Today I'm going to attempt to make mini trellis's because my potted pea plants need it desperately!! The poor roots on those things are already through the bottomof the pots. Hmmm....need bigger pots!
I planted catnip not long ago and it too is already so big it keeps toppling over and breaking so I've been snipping and drying bits of it to make some cat toys to sell.

I know that I really do have cabin fever. This week it's not supposed to get out of the 30's (again). The ground is frozen solid and you can still see your breath when you walk outside. Today is March first and we've not had any major weather situation so I'm resigning myself that March will "go out like a Lion".... I'd rather it come in that way and get it over with!

Another day to myself. I shouldn't be so whiney about it, however if you know farm life you know that when the weather is frozen and cold its the perfect time to shell corn or spread manure. Jerry has been doing either one all week. I have no doubt that once the ground thaws it will be time to fit and chisel plow. I have been tying to get as much work out of him as possible before Spring Fling.....haha. He comes home, eats, works a little for me and then collaspes in a snoring heap on the couch with two snoring/adoring dogs.

However, I do have two beautiful cold frames now! YAY! They look really nice.

Okay, I'm off to work on my new blog. I've been taking pictures of my house inside and out and I'm going to post a "virtual tour" and ask for decorating advice. I love change and I'm growing weary of the look.

OH! I almost forgot! I put one of those 6 foot tables in my dining room and its covered with started plants... hee hee.. Of course I took pictures of the dining BEFORE i did that, but when Jerr got home late last night he was like..."wow, we have a table garden!"

Okay, off to blog, and to sew. I'm trying to dress my nest before Spring Fling. See ya later.

March is coming in like a lion here! It's snowing. Uuugghhh!! So maybe we'll have some spring soon. It looked like on the weather channel that it was going right around us and going south. But they can't be right all the time. I just hope it does not stick.

Dawn, I am glad you got to be outside. It does a body good to get out there. The stars soung pretty neat. I hope you show them in your blog. I tried to go to your new blog, but there was nothing there yet. You hubby sounds like mine. Does a little work then takes a snooze. Then up again.

Rene, so sorry to hear about your hubby. Mine is too. Tell him to watch the carbs. It's helping my hubby to keep his sugar levels low. He hates it, but oh well. Everything good is a carb. A friend's hubby is very diabetic, insulin dependant. He only gets 12 grams of carbs a day. Lots of meat and veggies and whole dairy. It seems to be working.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday. Kris

I'm back. I thought I'd try to post a link to my blog... I'm not very techy so we'll see... lol!

Kris, no I haven't taken a pic of the stars....yet. I really need to get up to my sewie room and finish some stuff. PLUS, I bought some of those coin envelopes at Staples and have been stamping them and putting seed inside to sell. They are pretty cute. I want to list them on my localharvest store.

Rene: I am so sorry to hear of your situation. Sure makes mine seem so petty and trivial. I know how hard it is to deal with diabetes. My mom was a diabetic. Its an ugly disease. The worst part is, its not the sugar that ruins the party... its all the side effects. However Kris is right (about certain foods). You a a smart cookie. Have your local hospital or dietician give you some renal failure recipes. Even though he's not there, they are very well balanced. I still make a few of them myself!

Kelley: I'm so happy you're enjoying that LOVELY Texas weather....

okay. www.harvestthyme.blogspot.com....any takers?

Good Morning Mavens~ Thanks for the well wishes for hubby, he is doing well and as cute as ever....We have had a great weekend as part of it was spent at MaryJanesFarm, then to watch state basketball.. as my hometown kids were playing.... and today we are taking a drive to check out the fields ( carrots are being planted), which is one of my favrite things to do.. there is nothing more fun to me (other than writing or putting my toes in the dirt) then driving the back roads checking out fields.......It is the best way to spend an afternoon.... we will crank up the radio, sing off tune and just drink it all in.................

I have had the provilidge of teaching a couple classes on the square foot gardening system.. I LOVE THIS SYSTEM... Really, how much fun can one girl have............I have posted pictures of me hauling wood from a rebuild and I will post the boxes that I am making.... I am eager to teach more classes....

Oh and my chicks arrived..............8 Buff orpingtons...........they are SOOOOO cute! and every morning I remind myself we are one day closer to planting.. and I cant wait...

Happy Sunday Mavens..... Hopefully you will get out and "shake off the dust"....... Love you all!

HaHaHa, that's me, I've never been very good at "games" or politics. I just refuse to play, lol. Sometimes you just need to say what needs to be said, plain like. Other times it's best just to keep your mouth shut, lol.
There is an old Scottish saying, it goes like this:
"It is better to keep your mouth shut and let everyone think you are an idiot, that to open your mouth and prove them right."
Ha! I love it.

Oh, and my DH's mom had a saying, "If you can't say something nice, be quiet."
That one is pretty good too, lol

Oh, well, it all works out, right.

Dawn and Kelley, sounds like you both have been busy planting some goodies.
Dawn..the stars sound so fun!
Rene'- sorry to hear about the diabetes diagnosis..hugs to you all..the best thing for dealing with diabetes is to make sure your hubby is 100 percent on board about helping to help himself/educating himself about what his body can/cannot handle....my dad wasn't when he was diagnosed and it was a very not fun thing /very heart breaking actually....to see the results of the disease.Wishing your family the absolute best in this tough journey.
Every one else... hugs to you all today. Have fun and may the sun shine upon your day.

MArch is coming in like a Lion today. Windy and raining off & on... the poor girls are all stuck in their studio because I closed up their door to freedom until the wind dies down, and if it does they will be happy to comeout & scratch for bugs & such...right nnow though I am afraid their feathers would be blowing to. I will be .Spending the day reading and blogging. I just put my potaot seed in the garage until I can plant them..don't want them to rot before I get them inthe ground. Have a great Sunday all...

cold here today... and just got word that Atlanta is having snow today ..yikes!time to shake the brooms at winter and tell it to get a move on now..Spring is moving in slowly..maybe we ought to get the brooms after Spring and swat it's behind into position..ha
But..at least our chickens are starting to lay again here..so nice to have fresh eggs again.
-----------
Fun fact..have you ever tried the Chantenay Carrot?..it is an old heirloom variety that dates back to the mid 1800's.Comes from Chantenay, France.
It has seen a resurgence in recent years in Britian where it actually almost went out production in the area in the 60's.
But..farmers have been bringing it back.
A very tasty red core bright orange variety..good for fresh snacking, baby carrots, juicing, freezing, canning.Grows well in poor soil.

Waaahhhh!!!! We had snow this morning and are expecting more tonight~up to a foot. I want spring!!

Dawn~Your new blog looks great!!!!! I love the pictures of your farm.

I have been working on some embroidery and going through some magazines to recycle. It has been a pretty lazy day here. It's nice to have days like these.

Rene~sorry to hear about your hubby. Praying for your son in Afghanistan.

Dawn~I have some chicken questions. Can I call you tomorrow at the hatchery? What is a good time?

I need to get working on my garden plan. I have all my seeds now. I have to see when is the best time to start them for this area.

Love all of you!!! You are a great group of ladies. I have learned so much from you already!!!

I went on SSE site and would like to purchase a few seeds but how do I know if they will grow in my area, zone 5? Is there a way to see on the site how many days they need to grow and what zones they are for? Just thought I'd ask here first before I call the company. Thanks

Kelley ~ Not sure you want to bake your soil... I've heard the smell isn't fabulous. Especially if you, say, have to live in your house and cook in it and such. Maybe similar to the oven-cleaning "pleasantness." So after hearing that particular nugget online several times over, I decided it wasn't worth it to me. But that's just me. I don't mind getting compost from the store to use and then put in the garden when I'm finally transplanting stuff.

Hi to everybody else, I just have nothing else to add to the conversation at this point. Unless anybody's in need of some cloth diapers (mostly small sized) for a kiddo. Working on decluttering the house, and I haven't gotten around to listing them until recently.

I've been having fun with putting down my garden plans in a neato program online. Pretty colors and cute fruit/veggie pictures and all.
Besides that, the kidlets and hubby and I have been doing a bunch of stuff together and keeping pretty busy. Tonight I made some butternut squash (from October that kept decently in my garage! I'm *so* growing butternuts and acorn squash this year for storage!), and hubby's making huckleberry cheesecake (from huckleberries we picked when the babe was brand new). This part of being the ant instead of the grasshopper I'm really groovin' on.

Hey Lanna, yeah, I opted for NOT Baking soil in my oven yesterday....I mean sure....talk about frugal and all, but.....the Sterile Seed Starting Mix is really cheap and has worked really great in the last 3 years for me....All of a sudden DH thinks buying SSSM is "stupid"....he didn't think that the last 3 seasons...hmmmmm....who knows, but anyhow....I turned the compost pile yesterday, DH went and found some hay to mulch our garden with (we tried that last year, and it worked GREAT for keeping weeds down, plus, we didn't have to water as much...until the drought hit...lol) so he went ahead and mulched the onions while I unloaded hay. It is 26 degrees here this mornin, but we are supossed to have more beautiful weather all week, back up in the eighties by thursday (YAY!!!!) So it looks like I'll be outside ALOT this week!! Mildred McGobbleSticks knocked over a pot that had my bleeding heart in it yesterday.....Oh How I hope the poor thing survives! I just love my bleeding hearts! My Clematis' are both getting green leaves on them, so they aparently survived the move...and all of my daylillies that I had in pots are coming up....so, spring is definately in the air here in Texas!!!! And I couldn't be happier!!!!!
