Morning, Mavens!
Happy Bday Denise!
I've gone and done it... Really gone and done it now...
I was chatting with DS's Scout Leader's wife over the weekend, and had brought Seed Savers catalog with me as well as the Wood Prairie catalog (they do heirloom organic potatoes) to see if they were gardeners and wanted to order.
Well, Mrs. Scout Leader is now going to tear up the grass behind their garage! And, she has checked out All New Square Foot Gardener from the library!
Oh, boy - I totally corrupted her! YIPPEE!
We had the best chat talking about vegetables, and how we got SO MUCH produce from such little space - almost microfarming in suburbia. I explained how we were expanding, and working harder with the companion planting, especially to get rid of those nasty Japanese beetles.
And ya know what? I got an email from her as a reply to some other info I sent her, and her reply was "that frost date can't come soon enough!"
Mwahahahahah (evil laugh)
Happy Hump Day, All!

Ann ~ That's awesome! Another one to the dark side...
Well, depending on how stringent you guys decide the isolation process is (I only have so much room, and oh baby, have I got plans for what I'm hoping to dry/freeze/can this year)... I call Kootenai tomatoes and purple podded peas. The Kootenais are only available as far as I know from a guy my Tomato Lady knows (so if something happens to him, oops), and Amishland doesn't offer the purple podded peas anymore.

TS ~ Sorry, but not me. I have no practical experience with seed-saving, just textbook. And I'm trying to keep things off of my plate right now, not put more on. Lillian, Corinne, Tina, I'm sure there are others whose names escape me right now would be much more qualified.

Okay, Mother Hen in the room! I hear the clucking and this is something that should be taken care of in the henhouse. That way it can be thread specific and not get lost in the HMV....I do know that Marcy Jo was in the process of putting together a list of sorts. As for who is growing what.... I'm not sure. this is why I'm so glad to be hosting Spring Fling, because we will utilize Sunday as a gathering/meeting day, put things on paper, brainstorm etc. Then, I will bring that brainstorming info to BBB in July for the rest of us. If you are not going to attend either, please do not worry. NO ONE here will leave you out of the loop.
So it appears if we have a couple more "positions" available in the chapter. One being the moderator of seed saving and I almost think we are to a point where we need a post mistress. Someone that has the time to email or snail mail people to keep us up to date on specific items.
Karen has her plate PILED at this point with the newsletter that each week becomes it's own monster. So I agree with her.
Marcy dear, are you up for this? Do you want to work with someone and put a master list together and compile the saving info and we can use this for the basis of the bank? I honestly think you will need some help.
Ann: oooooh! Goody for you! I LOVE corrupting people!
Okay chicks, I'm off to the coop. I have a couple more things to see about for Spring Fling....

| ok, ok, ok......I am volunteering to do whatever needs to be done......As I sit here cracking myself up at my own computer illiteracy...lol....So, I guess I need to bite the bullet and send my $20 to join the sisterhood so I can post in the hen house....I can be in charge of the master list for the seed bank if no one else is able, or I can certainly help whoever is doing it. Anything else I may be needed for....lay it on me....I am a stay at home mom, not saying that means I get to sit around on the internet all day chatting and playing while eating bon - bons and painting my nails and drinking pina coladas, though I wish it were that way.....but I am available to be at my computer between dirty diapers, laundry, dishes, garden, dogs cats, turkey and chickens (I think ya'll know what I mean). And I do get about 2 hours of solitary peace each day in the pre-dawn hours between the time DH leaves for work and the little monsters wake up that I can spend emailing or snail mailing info to Mavens........so....there it is.....I volunteer.......Lord Please Help Me!!!...lol....But honestly, I really would love to do anything to help our chapter and our mission! |

Hello again. I've been reading back a few pages and all this sounds reallt interesting. I had gotten some of the free seeds from Wintersown and I noticed someone said something the Amish Paste. I got those and several others, too. The Marglobe are heirloom but are all of them from heirloom?
I just got another e-mail from Center For Food Safety. I don't know how I started getting e-mails from them. But today's is titled "Could GE Crop Regulations Be Any Weaker?". That caught my eye. Does anyone else get this? You could look it up under Center For Food Safety or the e-mail is office@centerforfoodsafety,org. There is a place where they want people to send letters to get better crop regulations.
Anyway, I thought you all might want to check this out.
And happy birthday, Denise!

Hey Kris, I get those emails too. I think it's because of the emails I sent about the patent on the warty pumpkin issue. I haven't read my email on it yet, but they sure send interesting info. We should tell our elected representative what we want, and not leave them to their own devices.

Hey, maves ~
Trying to fight my way back from the land of overwhelm. Oh so many life issues are putting me there. Not bad things - most of them good, in fact. But as I told Dawnzo, I'm trying to put only the best on my plate as there isn't much room there to start with. And then there's the whole shifting world thing.........
In an attempt to regain some balance, I started a thread in the henhouse called "Seed-saving plans 2009." I thought it might help to have a local spot where we could all list our seed-saving experience and garden plans. That way we can have an idea of who we could go to for questions and to help with our plans. It's a first attempt so if you think of anything to add/change/delete, feel free to post your thoughts. (I know we put our garden info in our bios but this would give more detail without the extras).

Wow Dawn, the image of a "turd burger" is embedded in my mind now:) I am so glad you are coming to the BBB, it's official.... Great ideas on the seed saving bank mavens, and thanks for volunteering Kelley. I am going to stick with being the badge badger, that I can handle and once I get back I will be badgering up a storm:) I don't know if I can commit to isolation cages, it's that whole kid in a candy store thing. I may just have my contribution to the seed saving effort be buying seeds from heirloom suppliers and spreading the word to others - I am growing 11 kinds of tomatoes this year after all ( and yes I do need every single one of them) Okay - I got up at 3 am today and my eyes are literally crossing I'm so tired so this is it for the night, I miss you all, will check in more after the vacation, right now all heck is breaking loose at work so I am swamped and overwhelmed, can't wait for "normal" to come back. I just received an ACRES USA sample magazine I sent for months ago and was surprised to find an article on Organic seed production. It really opened my eyes as to how intense it is to keep up with our crop heritage. There is a site they mention for Restoring Our Seed, I need to check out. There are quite a few requirements for certain seed crops and some must be totally isolated to keep them from cross pollination. Boy do I have a lot to learn. I did like how they said that restoring our seed is a recollection of varieties lost, skills almost forgotten and community once shared. I think I'm in the right place for learning how to get back to a simpler, better way of life. Sorry Dawn, but the "turd burger"? Now that's funny. haha snort
