Good Morning Mavens,
I found myself re-reading through all the posts on this thread this morning. Holy Cow, are we are "force to be reckoned with"? Or what?

Rene - most definitely a force to be reckoned with, I was thinking that when we get our henhouse maybe we should have a topic where we re-define what roles each of us are taking. We have been so prolific as writers - I should say you all because I have been a little absence due to work schedule - that it is hard to go back and figure out who volunteered for what. I liked the idea of everyone having a role. Also should we have someone in charge of the book-club or should we do it by concensus? I would love to start reading and discussing with all of you:)
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle has so much in it on cultural attitudes toward agriculture - the story of her trip to Italy is great!!
Teresa Sue - the Wonder Twins were a pair of superheroes on the Saturday AM cartoon The SuperFriends - circa late 1970s early 1980s. They were actually twins and theirspecial superpower was one could turn into any animal and the other could be a form of water.
Talk to you all soon Amy Grace

Hello! Girls, I am new to gardening and organics. I saw this post and I knew I wanted to join. I have so many things to learn about in this group. I have not joined the sisterhood, yet. I need to go and read about it. I am not familiar because I am pretty new here. We are on a limited budget because I am a sahm who homeschools. Only one income and hubby is in school. I just want to be a part of something as awesome as this. It sounds like we are ready to take this country back in the right direction and not let the big companies push us around. We are a free country but right now they have all the power. Just my 2 cents. Warmly, Ruth

Ruth~ I know the one truth is, that no matter how much we know there is always room to learn more~ and what a group to learn from. I stayed at home and home educated my two oldest (who are now in the military), and re-joined the work force having 2 others at home still. Just this last year I was blessed with the oppertunity to work out of my home and allowing me more of a balance between work and family, SO I certianly can relate. I am so glad that you are here, and cannot wait to get to know you more. Welcome!

Ruth- I can certainly sympathize with the financial crunch. My husband and I are in one as well. We are waiting for financial aid to come in. One thing that helps is shopping at Costco. I have noticed that they are carrying much more organic items there which is a huge help.

Hi Ruth, and welcome. This chapter is kinda like a nuclear power plant, so hold on to your hat and apron and get on the ride, because the energy here is a force to be reckoned with!

Rene, I love it! I'm serious, er, I'm see-wee-us!
It looks like a lot of us took Sunday off to keep from suffering from HMA (Heirloom Maven Addiction). I find mine gets more intense as the week goes on so taking a break for a day helps get me "reoriented." Hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing weekend and are ready for the next wild ride. Don't look at me - I'm not putting the spurs to the horse this morning! I had a couple of thoughts last night but no paper handy to write them down so I'll just have to wait til the wheels get greased again.
It feels like this week is going to be more about digging in for me -research and reading and such. Anyone else starting to feel the same? I'm sure the fall weather has something to do with it.

Annika, thanks for finding the "Seed Savers Exchange" book site. I hadn't wandered that far. My first thought was that buying in bulk means they'll be shipped to one person who will and we'll need to reimburse them for shipping to us (although now that we have Pay Pal - thanks, Alee - that isn't too difficult). So I wandered to Amazon and although the book would be cheaper there, I'd rather have my money go to the SSE. Anways, it's something to keep in mind when we're ready to decide on our first HMBC (Heirloom Mavens Book Club) book. Can you tell I'm getting into the acronym thing?
I forgot what I signed on here about. I was going to post a thought that popped in my head (I actually typo-d "pooped in my head") but it popped (or pooped) right out again.

P.S. The Garden Seed Inventory [B778] looks like it has a wealth of seeds to choose from. Here's a quote from their blurb: "Unique sourcebook widely used by gardeners and plant breeders as a preservation tool to purchase endangered varieties while sources still exist." Sounds like it's right up our alley, girls!

Annika that's a great idea, we can all buy our books for the HMBC and Karen is right on that we should support the SSE. Hopefully our henhouse will be up this week, I know poor Sunny has tons to do though so I'll be calmly awaiting it,lol.

Oooo Oooo Oooo! Joining as a group! I like that idea! Maybe we could get a special rate that way and, even more important, let the world know about the Mavens! Yea, now, we're talkin'.......

Hey Mavens ~ Karen, I had a thought too last night (thankfully I had a pen) and this morning I shared it with our Queen Bee herself who said "go for it"... So if you all want here is what I was thinking...
Once the henhouse is up and going and we have the list of books, the list of sisterhood badges that coincide with what we are doing I will build a curriculum. When that curriculum has been met and approved then we can all earn a diploma from the farmgirl "U", making us a "certified Maven". The maven degree will be like having a "minor", as the completion off ALL the badges in the sisterhood is the "Major"...We will have "graduation" or handing out the minor diplomas once a year at FarmFair as well as on the Forum around that time for those that simply cannot make it to farmfair. The diploma and certificates will come from the farm. So whatcha all think? Ready for Maven School?
Annika~ is there a way as librarian that you can help us keep track of who has what book just in case we cannot find something in the local libraries? I would recommend that everyone use their LOCAL libraries 1st.. But it may not hurt to have a back up plan..
Dawn and Karen~ any thoughts?

http://www.seedsavers.org/membership.asp We can ask about group membership =)
Rene, do you mean where best to buy each book? Sadly, Amazon is the least expensive route for most of them, but I can keep track of which publishers have what book possibly, or where else besides Amazon we can buy them. I'll be working more on books as I have the time, I'm not a fast typist, but I love looking things up and I'll do my best to make the list easily usable.
I'm stoked about farmgirl "U", hopefully I can keep up :P I haven't been to school in decades
I missed both of you too, but I know that you take Sundays off for rest, so that is a comfort

Annika, I was thinking more like if there was a farmgirl that would "loan out" a book if a farmgirl coudn't find one at the local library or doesn't want to purchase one. And dont worry about keeping up with the whole farmgirl U. it is stuff we are already doing or taling about doing, so it will just be a little trophy when we get 'er done.. you will do awesome.

HOnestly. 32 pages? I would've posted sooner, but I had to change clothes. Because they were wet. Because I pee'd my bloomers. I'm serious. I pulled inthe drive, my truck is still packed and I got online and laughed so hard I piddled. So now I'm desperately trying to catch my breath and be 'see-we-us". Oh heck! So much going on I dont know where to start. First of all... HI GIRLS! I had a good time at the show and visiting family. I went to a flea market Sat and got a really cute apron for $3. My daughter is going to Homecoming and we did a little dress shopping. Its a vintage looking dress with black crinolin's and its cute as can be. She is growing up so fast! I also spent a lot of time with my dad who is really excited about what I'm doing here. I really needed a family fix. I waited too long... I missed you and yes: I did suffer from HMA withdrawls. My dad kept harping on me that being on the computer longer than... 5 minutes was bad for my health! If he only knew... so outta respect I kept it to a minimum. The bumper sticker is a great idea. I would just like to request that it be a coated one. I had one on my truck from farmlands.org and one rain shower faded it to white. OR, just put a clear piece of contact paper over it on windows only, otherwise you'll lose your paint. I like the "seed of the future" idea. I was wondering if the word HEIRLOOM could be shadowed behind the actual words so that people know we are heirloom seed savers....do you know what I mean? Alee: Go for the email and paypal. You are pretty efficient in that area and if you can set it up at no cost, then more power to us. ONLY if you have time to deal with it. You can be the treasurer. **Can't remember who suggested the SSE, but if we could join as a club, that'd be the best until after this election and our economy shifts (as it always does after one). **Karen: I'm glad everyone had fun at my expense. Remeber this drea friends... I'm a GOOD practical joker. I WILL be out west next summer. Tread lightly! hee hee! Rene: I am in awe of you. I love love love the idea of Farmgirl U for us Mavens. there is no such thing as bad knowledge....this is really exciting stuff! I'm in.... I found a magazine at TSC this wknd, its called Heirloom Farm. Its amazing. I have been devouring it. I am not much of a book reader, but periodicals, papers, etc, I blaze through. I cant remember what else has transpired. I need to go back and reread some stuff. Oh! I am in the process of finishing up some badges, should they really go on a jacket or can I do a denim bag? I have a jacket, but as I lay them out they dont look right... Alright girls. I need a nap. Been up since 4am. Please, have mercy on me and keep it under 3 pages!!

Playing catch-up now:
Amy Grace, PBS did a special several years ago where they put several (4, maybe) families back in the 1800's and had them live like they did in pioneer days. It was incredibly interesting, especially the family with the HUGE $$$ house. They're daughters were addicted to the mall and their son was hooked on computer games. After living like pioneers for 6 months (not sure about the time frame), they were bored when they came back to the 21st century. It was really cool and a real statement about how we live today if affecting our kids. I'd love to know the name of that book. And you've inspired me to hit the library. Good going, girl!
Speaking of books, Barbara Kingsolver, who wrote Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, also wrote The Poisonwood Bible. It was an Oprah's Book Club choose a few years ago. I haven't read the book yet but I remember when they were reviewing it on her show. It's about a family that moved to Africa to do mission work in the early 1900's (I think, because baking mixes were available then). They took things like the afore-mentioned baking mixes, etc. thinking that they were necessities. During their time in Africe, they learned how little they needed to live with to be truly happy. When they came back home, they went through culture shock of seeing store shelves packed with things people think they can't live without. I may be off on the details but the point really hit home to me. Our library has it on tape. I checked it out earlier this year but didn't get very far. I'm going to check it out again before we leave on our trip to Colorado in a few weeks. Listening to books on tape keeps me awake when I'm driving.
Back to catching up: You all that remember the Wonder Twins are making me feel really old. I in college in the 80's, not watching cartoons - well, I did make sure to catch the Smurfs. They were just too cute!
Dawn, another correction for you - it's Marcy Jo, not Mary Jo. I know, when you're mother hen to so many chicks it's easy to get names confused. My aunt had the same trouble and she only had five kids.
And what did we decide about posting our personal goals? And I don't remember anything about a mission statement but that's nothing new for me. I'm kind of mixed on the idea at this point. Maybe we can see what everyone's personal goals are first, and go from there to form a mission statement. Just a thought.
TS, you are so right about "hearing the rumbling in your 40's, being ready to take on the world in your 50's." It's so important to have the optimism of your 20's and the drive of your 30's, but I had no idea that hitting 50 would feel so empowering. There really is something about being able to look back over decades of your life and seeing the changes and wanting to make a difference, to make the world a better place while you're on it. Ree-wy, I'm see-we-us, it's em-pow-o-wing!
TS, great minds apparently do think alike! I just read your idea of putting it as part of our bio's. Whoa! It's a bit scary how much we're on the same thought wave.
Hey, Lora, when you're ready to start hanging clothes on the line, putting them in the dryer for 10 minutes will get the lint off - or in our case, the dog and cat hair.
Tina, not sure how I missed it on my first skim through the posts, but YOU'RE IN THE SISTERHOOD! How cool is that? We ARE a force to be reckoned with now!!! And thanks for getting the bumper sticker logistics - the winds of change are a-comin'! (I know I'm jumping ahead a few posts but it fits here.)
Annika, how's the water heater situation? Fixed or did you need to set up a bath outpost?
Okay, I think I'm caught up. Whew!
