Dawn~ the answer to the badge this is NO... There is ALOT going on at the farm. The least of it, getting the next issue of the magazine done. We have had some "changing of jobs" and it is just taking a little getting use to. So continue to be patient they will get them sent out. Glad to have you back!

Yea, that would perk things up, Kelley! I'll be out running errands this morning so I won't be phone available. I'm hoping to be able to get to stl tonight but we'll see.
WELCOME, GAIL! I was reading your bio and all of a sudden I thought, "Oh, that's Cheryl's Gail - Yippy Skippy!!"
Ann, I LOVE the weapons of mass creation thingie!
Okay, this is shorted than intended but Gus needs to do his duty and I must tag along.
Dawn, I would love it if you'd pick up a farmgirl cap for me. We don't have that store round these parts - leastwise not so's I know of.

Hi everyone. I feel like I'm breaking in on an important conversation here. But I just have a few quick questions about seeds before I order some.
I was noticing in the Johnney's catalog about the corn I am thinking of getting this year. It says it's open-pollinated. If anyone has the new book it's on page 28 and it's at the top called Double Standard. Does anyone know about this corn?
I am wondering if it's ok to get an open-pollinated variety versus an heirloom. I don't know if that makes any sense. Or is it the same? But it says this corn is good to save seeds from and it was developed from an older corn variety.
I am learning everyday about all this and reading alot. I got the magazine about heirloom gardening and have read alot so far. But have a ways to go.
Thanks for your time. I did join the HM hen house this week. I could ask there, too, but am not sure if this is the same place.

Hi Kris, you are in the right place. And dont worry about breaking in a convo... we all just pop in a say whatever.....
i have heard about Johnney's and I think they are okay.... more time needed to research that...
In my humble opinion, I do believe that heirloom and open pollinated go hand in hand.
Welcome to the COOP!!

Hi Mavens!
Welcome Gail!
I know that Johnny's has signed the Safe Seeds Pledge, so no GMOs if they're following what they say they are - I assume they are NOT a Monsanto company!
Safe Seeds Pledge: http://www.gene-watch.org/programs/safeseed/sourcebook.html
Speaking of the Safe Seeds Pledge, it bugs me that the list doesn't seem to have been updated since 2006. I just emailed them to see if the program's still an active one, and if it's based on the honor system or if there's some way of monitoring the participating seed companies.
Kris, if you can't go for heirloom, go for open pollinated! A lot of times one and the same, and there's no real strict definition of heirloom - everybody has a different one - but if it's OP then it's not a freaky-deaky hybrid frankenfood GMO garbage at the very least.
Dawn, nice to see ya.
Gotta head off and help the BF deal with the mess in my garage, since he'll be moving a lot of his stuff in there for the year that he's stuck in a soulless apartment complex outside of Los Angeles. At least I know he won't run off on me completely - I've got his work bench and several of his bikes! Ha ha!
*hugs* all around!

While we're at it here's a link to the Farmgirl caps. Apparently you can also order them online. Not exactly online, ok, but mail order.

One more post!
Anyone have any idea how I can keep my neighbor's #$)*#! CAT from digging in my raised beds! Don't exactly want to fence around them considering I haven't even planted anything yet. That, and most cats are impervious to fencing.
(Insert more swearwords here)
That cat - I feel bad for it but I hate it - they don't take care of it, they leave it outside all the time, has a big sore or wound on its back and obviously been fighting with the other cats in the 'hood - I don't want it anywhere NEAR my kitties and certainly not messing up my dirt.
Done venting. *whew* thanks! |

Kris, you came! Congratulations on taking the plunge! This is the hangout and don't ever worry about busting into a conversation. There are usually several going at the same time and nothing's more important than hearing from a sista. And I agree with what the others wrote above - nothing else to add.
Amanda, your post about the pledge and 2006 jogged my memory a little bit. It jogged it enough to remember I wanted to post about Monsanto and not seeing any info on them since 2005 regarding something. It's the something that's out jogging on a different track right now. I think it might be how many companies have been bought out by them or what percentage of seed they "own" or something like that there. If this jogs anyone else's memory, please post and help me out.

I hate when a post submits itself without my permission. I was going to write something else but now I forgot. Oh yeah! Thank you, mavens, for not posting 10 pages while I've been out and about today. I picked up lumber to make some seed trays and compost sifting boxes. Also picked up some organic hummus (humus?) since we're a little low on seed-starting soil.
Dawn, loved the egg! How many calories do I burn reaching in the nest to pick it up?

Back again........yes, the question lurking in my mind is about Monsanto-bought companies since 2005. I think they bought out Seminis in 2006 but other than that, I haven't seen anything. Are the buy-outs being kept under cover now or have they bought out all the ones they can or what is up? Am I getting ultra-paranoid? I did find an article from November 2008 about them buying cornfields in South America for................bio-diesel. Yea, in addition to growing corn to feed cattle that are by nature herbivores and forcing them to eat unnaturally and to the great detriment of their health, let's cover the globe with that wonderful monoculture (i.e. corn) until we are totally dependent on it and the world on us (i.e. Monsanto and pals). Let's take up how much agricultural space to propel our need for speed? ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Mavens, I have been reading and baking, cooking and blogging and doing laundry...I just noticed the temperature on my outside the window thermometer adn it is reading 84 degrees.. Directly facing south and in full sun. So i think maybe the garden is thawing? Nah,.. I checked and i can maybe dig down 1 inch in one place and the trowel hits Frozen dirt. So I guess It willbe May or June before my garden is close to being planted.. I know it is only about 52 degrees outside right now really.. (sigh) Going into town in acouple hours to meet with the tax lady.. Got stuff together for her and want to get it filed so I can forget it. HAve a good afternoon & evening gals.. I might pop in later....
