AG you crack me up, hahahah, no pun intended, lol!

Lanna I finished "Cold Climate Gardening" about a month ago, I think it had a lot of great points and I intend to use some of those ideas.

I couldn't sleep last night as well and so I started reading "Carrots Love Tomatoes" again. What I did this time tho, in the section that tells what grows best with what, I highlighted in yellow the plants that grow well with the subject plant, and I highlighted in purple the plants that do not grow well with the subject plant. That way, at a glance I can see what to plant or not to plant. There is a method to my madness, lol. Last year, I misread the part that peas and onions hate each other. So I had a cattle panel and I planted peas on both sides of it and on one side I also planted onions. The onion side only produced a third of the peas that the non-onion side did. I was convinced. Also reading CLT, it struck me was a great Herbal that book really is too.
I have some other big news, but don't have the time today to tell y'all, tomarrow when DH goes to work, I'll spill the beans. Oh and post what seed I have to share.
I haven't told y'all lately what a fabu group of women you are. You are amazing, just amazing and I love ya.

ooooohhhh TS! I love news!

AG: you crack me up too...pun intended.

I spent most of this morning taking new pic for my etsy. I must say, I kinda like photography! But having a dig camera DOES make it easy.

I've had a copy of FA (farmers almanac) now for almost 3 months abd havent even started to browse thru it. Ive been going thru a 'purge' and cleaning out a lot of stuff. Amazing what you accumulate over 7 years. I'm almost embarressed. I took a farmgirls advice and divided things into 3 piles. LOVE IT. LEAVE IT. NEED IT. Most of the stuff I love, I dont need and I really do feel better about giving it to a worthwhile cause. For instance, I have a collection of crayons, markers, watercolors and such that I'm giving to my cousin who is a KD teacher. Then I have a box of sewie stuff, crafty/scrappy stuff and more beading stuff that I've already bartered for. As for my beading I'm thinking I'm about over it. It was a great outlet for me when I was grieving over my mother but I often find myself not interested in beading anymore. So I'm keeping a few key things and getting rid of the rest. I have enough charms to make 2 quilting charm bracelets, and one farmgirl charmer if anyone is interested. I also have a surprise package coming in and will let cha'll know what I'm doing with that.

Well to my etsy for awhile to 'clean house' and put some new stuff up for sale. Got a bunch of new scents in! Waterlilly, Amish Quilt, Love Spell, Monkey Farts and a few others.

Good Sunday Morning!
It is windy and has been blowing all night, The tarp over the chicken yard blew off so I had heavy duty stapling to do this morning so the girls could get outside for some fresh air without getting snowed on later. It is forcasted for the next couple days. But the sun is shining brightly now.
How are you all doing on reading Carrots love Tomatoes? I am about 1/3rd through it finding it quite interesting what grows best with what. I also highlighted sections I wanted to remember. Also drawing sketches of possible garden plans.
After dinner last night DH & watched a good movie too.. "Bonneville". It will make you laugh & cry. Kathy ates & Jessica Lange, two of my favorites. Looking forward to tomorrow to meeting with Gail & a friend of hers to go thrifting..she may be interested in becoming a "charming chick"chapter member. Also I want to take MJ magazine to our Co-op see if they would order the magazine for sale there. Have a great day doing whatever your hearts desire...

Karen, Yes I own a copy of Carla Emerys' Country Living and This new one Country Wisdom is bigger great information, Not written with the personal or humorous touches that Carla wrote but a very good resource I think..Covers Everything! Instructions, diagrams, charts. I am glad I bought it.

Amy, thank you for the email of the list of required books..

Has anyone read "Great Garden Companions" I just bought it too...looks pretty good.

Tina, I can see you jumping up & down. Be careful! You will spill those seeds.

I sure wish I could plant something.. Oh yeah I did., I planted 10 more paperwhite bulbs and bought pretty blue Hyascinth (not sure I spelled that right) but it is cheery inmy kitchen...

Hi girls!

Still laughing over the fake butt from a page or two back. :D

Got my seeds from Botanical Interests yesterday! WOOHOOO!!!! Carrots Love Tomatoes is still on hold for me at the library, I'm hoping my hold books come in Tuesday.

BF and I worked on the new raised beds for SFG a little more today.

Now fretting over what to winter sow and what to start indoors... since this is my first year of growing things from seeds (besides nasturtiums) I am a teensy bit anxious. Would really like to start everything outside that can possibly be started outside. Any advice would be appreciated.

TS that's sooooo cool about the tomatoes!

I have started telling everyone that holds still long enough about monsanto - including an unsuspecting bystander looking at the Burpee seeds at lowe's. She asked if she was in my way and I said, no, I won't buy that brand... on my way back out I saw her perusing the Ferry Morse seeds, so I consider this a minor victory.

Happy Sunday, all.

ooh..so excited...the lady emailed me back and said that she is sending me 4 varieties of tomato that have been in her family for years and years with the names that the family called them. She said these are all varieties not available commercially..she has made it her mission to plant them every year just to keep the seed going. there is some sort of pink German tomato, a yellow tomato, a super sweet big red tomato variety that has yellow striping in it she said she uses this type to make spaghetti sauce...and some sort of giant red oxheart type variety. All that she called Redx, yellow X, and so forth..but she said she'll let me know what the family called them.oh this is really, really exciting to me.I have been so excited about this all day long. She said she noticed that I had a love for gardening and the old varieties and felt to share the tomato seeds with me..according to her I'm the first one outside of her family that she has shared the seed with. O.k...yeah..I feel really special now..:0)honored.Maven high five! woohoo!

Amy Grace ~ I bet I'd totally love a copy of Country Wisdom. All we've got is a neat basic fundamentals-type book with photos that we found at Costco a year or so ago, and I have the Carla Emory book on loan from my neighbor (i.e. it's not mine to highlight or pencil things into).

Tina ~ Oh my goodness, how exciting!! If you want to share any of those heirlooms that may be a shorter season tomato... (that's me panting, btw) So which gal is it? I'm all for drooling on yet another website.

I went and took photos of my current seed collection, without my Heirloom Acres order arriving yet. http://www.xanga.com/LannaM
I'm just shy of 40 varieties of tomatoes. Oops.

Hey Lanna - I saw the Carla Emery book at Costco again last week - I missed out last time it was there so I am going to pick it up this next week
I was just finishing an apron for the apron swap and my brain ceased to function in the middle of making a bias binding. I have done this twice before - last time was two days ago, whipped right through it. Today I stood at the table and stared at my ruler and cutting mat in confusion - my DH asked if I had a cramp in my brain 'cause of the look on my face. This ever happen to you?
Oh my goodness, it just happened again. I was going to ask you all something but in the middle of it it left my brain. Hmmmm
Don't know, will have to try later Oh - Ruth I finally got onto your blog and your haircut is cute as heck!!
And Lanna - sorry, Ruth beat you to the book:) I wish I had three so I could get one to each of you

I can start planting things like peas now.In fact I'm planning on clearing out the raised bed tomorrow..if the weather stays clear, and getting some bean seeds planted and going.
and whatever else I can get planted out there.
Anyhow..yes I'll grow these tomato varieties and see how they do, and hopefully I'll have some to share after trying to grow them.
I don't know yet how many seeds of each variety she is sending.
But she said if I was looking for other things heirloom wise to let her know ...chances are she grows it/has seeds. So..we will definitely be corresponding/keeping in touch with each other.

I am in zone 8 so I have a pretty good year long growing season..for the most part..although we did have freezes last month and will see another cold snap here at about Easter time..we'll have a night of frost about then. But for now I can grow my first crop of peas like sugar snaps up until then. And my lettuces I can get started now.

Good morning Mavens, I want to give a big hug to every one who needs one today.
Things are no easy girls and it seems we are all exploring new territories in our life at the moment. Families evolve, jobs are loosing their ground and kids grow up while we have to tend to our parents. Moves of all sorts are of our agendas.
We are growing more than seeds this year, we are also growing friendship and care and we are nurturing our group in many ways, and for this I am thankful.
Because we are together we can do wonders.
Tina, what a gift, all these truly heirlooms seeds.
Lanna, hope you are feeling better.
Amy Grace, we are making plans to be in Paris from the 4 th to the 6 th, so when you have your program, we can see how and where to meet. I am getting so excited at the idea to give you a real hug.
Ruth and Dawn, you have both beautifull hair cuts. It is so nice to see your faces.
Have a great day,
Corinne

Good morning everybody! Hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was quite busy and full!!

I have had country wisdom for 2 years now, and DH and I love it! we constantly use it as reference, seems like one of us is lways flipping through it!

Out of the 3 libraries in this county, none of them have CLT, so I will have to do a loan...urg, and since we are coming into planting season it could be weeks before I get it...(patience, must have patience!)
Tina, that is sooo exciting about the seeds....If I were you, I'd also be doing a happy dance!!!

Ohhh, guess what I picked up at a garage sale this weekend? One of those cute little "greenhouse" things that you can assemble and disassemble and put away when you don't need it,it has 5 selves and the zip open front door, stands about 5 foot tall. I thought about buying one last year to start all of my flower seeds in, but then I saw that they were $39.95...to me it just wasn't worth it!!! But $4 for one that a lady used 1 time to try to grow some african violets in.....yep...now that's a deal!! Also....a BUNCH of Countryside, Country Life and Country Journal Mags that she only wanted a penny a piece for!!

Anywhoo.....my head is spinning with thoughts...I have so much to do, want to get done, need to get done....and it's not even daylight yet!!

Oh, yeah....I meant to ask....Amanda, do you want to go to SF with me.....you're on the way!!! I could pick ya up! Just a thought!!

Hey, anyone heard from Rene'?

Ok....gotta go, need to acomplish at least one thing before daylight hits, that way I'll feel a LITTle better....ttyl, Kelley

ok...it's only been a hour and a half since my last post, but soooo much has happended in this time!!!

I left all of my seeds catalogues laying on the dining room table last night (i usually try not to do this, seeing as how I have a 2 YO boy and his favorite game is "Seek and Destroy") but I was soooo tired last night that I just left them there and still had not put them up this morning before the kids woke...well, i was outside feeding Mildred and chickens and had a nother cup of coffee, and when I walked in the door, both my babes were awake and sitting at the dining room table playing with the seed catalogues....and of course i RAN!!! but they weren't actually "playing" with them.....instead, Sadler looked at me and said "Look mommy, corn!!!"" and then Emily followed with "and there are my favowites...tomamtoes!" So I just jump right in and go along with them. It amazed me the amount of fruits and veggies my 2 and 3 YO"s already know...and the ones they don't, they ask me what they are!!! So we had "Fruit and Veggie 101" first thing this morning! And then it REALLY hit me....I mean, I've thought about Alot before, but this morning, it just REALLY hit me!!! I may not know all there is to know about about heirlooms and saving their seeds, and I may not have a whole box of seeds that have been handed down to me from generations before me....but what's stopping me from giving that to my own children? It starts with ME!!! It may not have been done for me by my family, but it WILL be done by me for my family!!! And another thing hit me, Kids are NEVER too young to start learning!!! I already knew that part, but it really is SO true! I am so proud that i have a 3 YO daughter that can already track elk and mule deer, and tell the differnce in their poop and their tracks, she also has a love affair with tomatoes that hit when she was just 14 months old!! And even at only 3, she already has 2 previous gardening seasons under her belt where she has actually planted the garden with us.....and this year Sadler helped, him and DH planted potatoes yesterday while I was gone and DH said he actually did very well, just like his sister!! This means ALOT to me concidering the fact that I have a friend with children almost the same age as mine who don't even know what dirt is much less what a garden full of fruits and vegetables is!!! anyhow, just needed to put all of this on here this AM, to share that so much can just HIT you when you least expect it!!

That is so awesome Kelley. Yes, we have a responsibility to hand these down to our children, our grandchildren, nieces, nephews, any child that will listen. So much comes with the seeds, love of land, work ethic, independence, respect for nature, wonder, dealing with loss, Oh, I could go on and on. Why do you think people who are so far removed from the land are feeling so dissconnected with the world. You go Maven!

That is awesome Kelley!! I have heard some things come out of my son's mouth that make me realize I have instilled some of my values in him too and that is so rewarding. What a happy start to Monday AM
Corinne - that is wonderful, where do you stay when you are in Paris?
Tina - Wow - Zone 8. That would be heaven.....We are zone 5 but have had hard frosts the last two years, one in June one in July :( I am really hoping for "normal" (yeah, right, what is that?) this year
Have a wonderful day Mavens

Godd Morning Mavens! It has been another busy week around here. I have been trying to post for the last few days and either get pulled away or distracted. Sounds like you all have been busy. Both Saturday and Sunday were fairly nice days here. Saturday was clean the chicken coop day, my compost bin is nearly full now. Guess it is time to start another one. Dh and I stopped by the feed store on Sunday and decided that we want to get some raspberries back in the ground, so yesterday we walked the property and found a spot for them. Now I just have to go buy them. We had yellow raspberries for about 6 years but the got a disease and we pulled them out before it killed them all off. That is ok because this time I am getting red ones which is what I wanted in the first place. The reason we had yellow is because they were mis-marked at the nursery but didn't know it until they fruited. Now I just have to control myself when buying my starts and not buy to many (of corse you can never have too many in my book).

Kelley- Way to teach those kids! I wish I had taught mine the value of gardening earlier in life. My youngest just looks at me funny and calls me a redneck-hippie, but you never hear him complain when there is fresh zucchini bread!

Dawn-I just wanted to tell you I think you did the right thing with your daughter and I do sympathize teenagers are a difficult breed. When I look back at my teen years, I often think to myself- how did my parents survive me? I was a wild one! She will look back on this incident one day and thank you.

Karen- Once again great job on the newsletter! Did you get your cold frames built! I guess you won't be reading this for a few days, enjoy your media fast.

Marcy Jo- It snowed here last Monday and I was crabby all day-at this time of year snow will do that to you! Hang in there.

Lanna- Hope everything works out for you.

Lora- How is the horse? I don't have a horse (DH won't let me have one- He says I will either kill me or the horse and he doesn't want to bury either one) I am a little (ok alot) danger prone. Any ways I love horses and I have got to feed a friends horses when she is at a show. She had one that had what I call a scrape on its leg, but she informed me how serious it can be to the horse. I can imagine what a screw did to your horse! Hope he is better.

Amy Grace- I have just started reading a book called "Through a dog's ears" it is about music that sooths a dog's anxieties. The book came with a music CD (haven't played it yet) and there is a website that I haven't been to yet it is : www.throughadogsear.com maybe this would help your dog.

Tina- I am so JEALOUS! What a great thing to have, honest to goodness heirloom tomato seeds. You cherish those seeds! I can't wait to hear how they taste!

Everyone else that I missed- a big hello to you! Gotta run and start the daily chores. Have a great day.

Lillian
