Mornin' Mavens, Welcome Lanna and Elinor!! Lanna - I second Teresa Sue's question where in Idaho are you? Teresa Sue - hang in there, the NWS website is calling for considerably warmer temps on Monday, at least they were yesterday. NWS is National Weather Service, and I got to be very intimate with their website during our "snowpocalypse" recently. Question for you mavens who have joined SSE, did you get a confirmation letter for your membership? I am just wondering how that works when you go to order, which I am planning to do today. I made some changes to my tomato order and came up with....11 varieties, again. Plus added a couple of things, of course:) Okay Palouse mavens - do we want to try to get together in February or is it still too crazy and we should wait till March? I know once April gets here you will have to prie the hoe from my cold hands before I get out of the garden, although I do need to vary my routine once in a while Talk to you all soon, Amy Grace

Oh and on a slightly less cheerful note, I could use your thoughts. I am still dealing with this employee situation and it is making me crazy. I am starting to have dreams about it and I can't think about anything else. It is not going to resolve itself so the only outcome is termination, which makes me feel like a horrible person but....I have spent almost 2 years working with this person to try to get them to understand basic things like customer service, respect of others, basic niceness, and work ethic. Okay I'm done, I just hope this doesn't drag on Amy Grace

Hi guys. Just a quick note from me as I'm in migraine land today. It came outta nowhere let me tell ya. Lanna, I posted about companion gardening in the henhouse, under the mavens on the bulletin board. I'm following that plan so hope it helps you out.
We are officially up to a foot of snow with another 5-7 inches on the way. Yes, jerry and I were out driving in it this morning as I was out of chicken feed...hmmmm no anyone that WORKS at a chicken place? I'm a dork, I should've bought it yesterday..... so we drove out and fishtailed a bit this morning and then my head started throbbing to back home where I am about to dive back into bed.
New scents posted the the etsy.... have fun with them. Lora you're gonna love it.
Tata!

Karen - I just remembered when I ordered seeds last year the companies didn't actually charge my account until they had shipped the seeds/plants. One company charged 3 times as there were 3 ship dates so it's possible that your order went through but if it hasn't shipped your card hasn't been charged yet. You should be able to check your order through the website I just ordered from SSE - yay!!!! so excited!!! Dawn - take care of that migraine!! Amy Grace

Amy Grace, congratulations on your order! It's after the fact now but yes, I did get a confirmation letter, along with my card to prove that I am a card-carrying member of the Seed Savers Exchange. Now if I could just find said card........ I was concerned when I placed my order that I wouldn't get the discount without the member number, but no, it's all in the system and went smooth as a whistle. I'm going to call them today. There was one thing from the first order that they couldn't ship (Cherokee Trail of Tears beans) but everything else went out right away. When I sign on to my account the herb/flower order doesn't show up at all - no backorder, no waiting processing, nothin'. Time to call. And since I have to order anyway, well, shoot, I might as well order the Seed to Seed book and some form of food preservation book since I have them on the line and I get that discount.
Dawn, so sorry about the migraine. If it's there like it is here, the weather change didn't help and today the bright sun on the snow.......it's a lot for a migraine-laden maven to deal with. When you're feeling better I posted a Spring Fling food suggestion in the henhouse.

Well, darn it anyway Karen, I hate it when I have to order gardening books!! I am going to have to wait a bit for those, I did just order Carrots love Tomatoes though. While I was ordering on Half.com I checked and they have quite a few of the Lynn Coulter books available. I had no problems with my discount being applied either, although I did forget my password for a minute....so many passwords for so many things I just ordered from Baker Creek and John Scheeper too - John Scheeper was the only place I found shallots so there it is Amy Grace

Amy Grace, I'm for waiting till later March, cause I'm a wuss and don't like to drive in bad weather. By the end of March winter's back is pretty much broken around here. I'll do whatever the majority wants tho.
Oh, save yourself some head/heart ache and cut that employee loose. Sounds like you have made every effort to educate that particular employee about the standards you expect. Some people are just untrainable because of their attitudes. I hope you have documented everything.....? Whatever you decide I support you, it's not easy being the boss, that I know.

Oh yea, in the excitement of posting about the new maven (Nancy aka pathwayforlife), I forgot to mention that our SSE order just arrived! Hubbie said, "Now I can quit my day job!" (So not serious) Now to call about the missing order.............

Update: I just called SSE. Every entry that's made is immediately placed in the system. If any of it had taken there would be at least one entry in my account. So NOTHING that I entered took. An hour and a half of NOTHING. The bright side is that the people there were great to work with and didn't charge shipping and handling. So even though I added a book (that has some weight), it's all shipping for free. And Teresa Sue, I signed up for the Flower and Herb Exchange too. Woo hoo!

One more thing - the curriculum for the Heirloom Maven Minor at Farmgirl U is now available in the henhouse.
Y'all are gonna be so happy when Robbie goes back to work tomorrow (hopefully) and you get a break from me.

There is so much happening here. I am finishing my order for SSE today and hoping to get a membership. Still need to run that by hubby.
Welcome Lanna and Elinor!!
Boy this maven things is really taking off. I don't think people realized what is happening to our food supply. Now we are all opening our eyes. It's a revolution. LOL
It has been busy here. I have another cold. So not fun. Very achy yesterday and a sore throat and runny nose. A little better today.
Amy Grace~You have done all you can, it's time that employee goes. That person will realize how nice they had when they go work somewhere else and end up with someone who's not as nice and patient as you are.
Karen~Yeah! You got your seeds. I hope your computer stops doing magic and making your orders disappear.
Annika~Nice to hear from you. How have you been?
Dawn~Try to take it easy and rest. Take care of yourself, chickie.
Warm hugs to all the mavens!!

Ok, hanging around the computer has its advantages. The Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide is now updated. Please check it out and let me know if you find any typos/misinformation/omissions/etc. Thanks!

On a better note, my head has subsided. I havent had a whopper like that since I got laid off....hmmmmm... coincidence?
Okay off to my nest. I need to scratch around and see what I can peck at.

Karen ~ Thank you. :) But the sisterhood thingie costs money. Things like that are extraneous right now for us, honestly. I haven't even had any magazine subscriptions in 4 years, if that gives you any idea. It's been snug taking care of leftover stupidity from college and then having three kids in the last 5 years (well, technically 6 I suppose, my oldest turned 5yo in October).
Hah, I've got Carrots Love Tomatoes on my bookshelf. My neighbor's in Sweden right now and pretty much lent it to me for the winter since my garden's bigger than hers (she got hers at the thrift store to boot). I've spent way too much time with that sucker trying to figure what I'm planting where this year. Don't need a "Great Bean Disaster 2009" after the 2008 debacle.
Teresa Sue ~ I'm barely north of CdA. Where are you homesteading at? I wish we could get a few acres up near Garwood, but until we win the lottery, suburban homesteading it is here in my little neighborhood. And hey, fwiw, I have family (well, my mom's cousin and such) out in Oakesdale, the rest of them are over in Washtucna/Ritzville.
I am feeling a bit lame that I ordered from 5 different places, but I figure I'm spreading the wealth. And I'm not extremely fond of SSE anymore after the politics that went down last year or the year before. Just, ugh. Talk about high school replayed. I am waiting a little bit here to order more grape vines, apple trees, and I'm going to attempt peach trees. Got neighborhood pears, cherries and more apples that I can scavenge with permission, so I'm good there.
Yup, the food supply thing has had me worried for a few years. Books like You Can't Microwave the Revolution (or however it's titled - by Sandor Ellix Katz) or Seeds of Deception are eye-opening for people that haven't heard of GMO's or anything. Part of why I was out in the yard planting over 100 asparagus crowns at 41 weeks pregnant last year - by golly, I've got 3 little mouths to feed - gotta do it somehow. And nope, didn't garden the stubborn kid out either. I sure tried though. Now if I could convince my hubby someway to get an honset-to-goodness root cellar thing going on, then I'd be ecstatic. It would involve permits and a backhoe most likely though.

Hey, Lanna, not to worry about the sisterhood thing. You can still read what's posted in the henhouse. In fact, if you'll check out the Mavens Beginners Guide you'll see that you can be an honorary heirloom maven. http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=582 Check out the HHM topic. There's even a thread you can post to about things in the henhouse (to keep things kind of organized) but the girls mostly just come back here. After all, this is the place to be!
In an attempt to avoid a Great Tomato debacle this year, this weekend hubbie took out a small walnut tree near the patch. Tomatoes don't love walnut trees.
Tina, yep, it was me and Dawn on the okra.

Woohoo - the more mavens the merrier. Thanks for all the kind words ladies, the paper trail of actually terminating someone takes some time so this is going to be sort of drawn out, our store is not union but goes by union rules so there are a lot of safeguards to keep someone from getting terminated once they have been there 90 days or more. Okay, happy thoughts about seeds!!!!! It was so nice out today, 39 degrees and sunny, I know it won't last but days like today remind me that, yes, spring is coming. Oh, and really cool news about our trip, we get to stay at a B&B that is on a farm in Normandy!! I am so excited to talk to a french farmer, it partly makes up for probably not being able to meet Corinne although I still have hopes. I hope that I can get through the language barrier to talk about some of the issues that we have been talking about here - it would be really neat to have some different perspective. Lanna - I ordered from 3 places to sort of share the wealth too - I will buy some seeds at my work as well, we sell Botanical Interests. Teresa Sue - March sounds good for a meet-up, you never know what the morrow will bring as far as weather this time of year. Karen - how nice of SSE to give you free shipping Talk to you all later Amy Grace

Morning Girls- I agree the more the merrier!
Welcome to our new Mavens!
Didn't get a chance to post yesterday, I had to get all of my chores done because 1. I knew there was a migrane in my future and 2. Went to see the in-laws new house. SIL is so excited, this has been a long time in the making. For Christmas we made a certificate for them stating that when they were all moved we would buy them a tree of choice for their new place. Talk about perfect timing by the time they get moved in and such it will be almost tree planting season here. I do have a migrane today so I will probably be away from the computer today.
Karen- I think the problem was on SSE end. When I ordered my potatos I had to end up calling them because my order wasn't processing.
Amy- Sounds like your trip is going to be the break you need. Which tomatos did you change your mind on? Maybe we can swap a few seeds- can never have enough tomato varieties.
Lanna- I am with you on the food suppy thing. DH and I pretty much grow and put up all of our fruit and veggies for the year. I ordered fom 3 different seed companies this year and will probably pick up a few from the nursery when I stop in there this spring. We have chickens and would like to eventually get a dairy goat.
Ruth- hope you are feeling better.
Dawn- Hope you are feeling better too. I received a chicken catalog in the mail yesterday, Hmmm......wonder where it came from. Thanks, I tried to call you about 5 times and each had to listen to your voice mail. So I gave up. A little suggestion to your company- Deleware chickens are not prone to go broody. I wish they would, but they are rather busy girls and don't have time for that nonsense. I have to use my Orpingtons when I want to hatch a clutch of eggs.
Gonna go everyone have a great day.

Hi Mavens!! Well, we got a bit of snow yesterday and the kids didnt have school! Morgin made herself a new handbag...cute but she does use crazy fabric combos!! We have a new member of the family....Batman! He is a boston terrier and beongs to Morgin, but who takes care of him? You guessed it..me!!! THe house is crazy with two dogs running around..like having two toddlers, but I looovvveee nap time!!!
Welcome to the new Mavens!! Glad to have you and jump right in!!!
Corinne~ not knowing where things are headed next can definitely bring some misery....it will work out and will probably be even better than you expected!! Hang in there!!
OK I fixed my strawberry jam...ok redid it is more like it. Originally I didnt use any pectin. I think I was trying for the authentic farmgirl something or other. If you have 5-6 quarts use 2 boxes and boil it a bit longer than a minute. It set up and now I don't have to use it all for strawberry sundaes!!!
I did get my SSE catalog and MEN this week..so exciting!!!
Thank you Lynn for chatting, and I am sorry I missed it. I will get over to the hen house and get the notes!!!
I hope everyone is keeping warm or enjoying the sunshine if you have it!!!!
