Karen - thank you, thank you for transcribing the chat. I am a big dork and have never "chatted" and got to the website and couldn't figure out where you all were - I spent 15 minutes trying to find the chat then figured out it wasn't going to happen. I am so sorry i wasn't able to be there after Rene, Teresa Sue, and Tina put the work into making it happen.
So, here is my question, how do you join a chat?
Corinne - I am so sorry to hear about the turmoil and being up in the air, that must be a very unnerving thing to be dealing with. We will just hope that a miracle will put you in Paris that week or that we will somehow meet elsewhere - either when you are here or on my next trip!! I am so excited about this trip I am already planning another one. I am so grateful to my parents for this - it is my birthday present - I never would have been able to afford it this year/decade etc.
Hope everyone has a marvelous day

Good morning Mavens,
It is so cold here , The chickens water had Ice on it.. Poor dears, I am sure glad they have their warm winter feathers on.. I am thinking of making them booties..I am sure their feet are cold.. Mine sure were when I went out there to check on them, feed them fill their water container. (nice warm water) & clean their floor..I made my second loaf of bread this morning. letting it raise now..Corned Beef for dinner tonight with yummy sourdough, can't wait.
The chat last night was great. I am looking for Lynn's book this week.
I also went out front checked my lavender plants they are all tucked in for the winter.. I was reading about lavender this morning and put some on my blog for todays herbal wisdom. Also an Ice cream recipe..Yeah I know Its WINTER.... but I was thinking Summer...when these flowers will smell so nice. I am going to get some herbs planted here in the kitchen window also next week.. I need to see that Spring is truly coming. A bright sunny spot awaits those babies..
Corrine I am sorry to hear that you are left hanging as to where you will be... I suppose that adds to the adventure..Africa sure sounded good. I pray whereever you land you will be happy.
So its off to the shower for me..after I have a piece of chocolate cake.. (Breakfast treat) will pop in later...HAve a great day ladies..

Amy Grace-You and I can be Dorks together. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out where I should be. Between that and slow internet, I just about gave up. Finally I found everyone under the "chat" button. It did take about 2 minutes for it to load (my internet). I thought I was the only one out there not knowing how to chat.

Hi everyone! I only stayed in the chat room for 20 minutes last night because DH and I were all alone in the house for the first time in about 2 weeks. It was so peaceful.

All that coordinated and printed last nights caht THANK YOU!!!!! You girls ROCK!

Corinne- Hope you find where you are going soon. Just think what an adventure you are on!

Tina, Karen & Ruth -seeds are going out today.

Off to the post office, talk to you all later.

Good morning Mavens, How fun it wa to be in on the chat last night and thanks to all that attended. it is a BIG deal when we can wrangle someone like Lynn to come chat with us....SO thanks for honoring her in the chat as well as the reading of the book and the reading of the notes from the chat that Karen so wisely nabbed.. we are a well oiled machine "together". I still say to those who havenet purchased or checked out her book, please do yourself a favor and do so............there are so many amazing "pearls".

You are so right about the book, Rene'. I love that she comes from an anyone-can-do-this-just-throw-the-seeds-in-your-pocket point of view. Even though I have books on gardening and information about specific plants, I learned so much on the sections she has after she highlights some of the heirloom varieties. It's general info about growing say beans or corn or cosmos or zinnias (that's for you, Dawn). (No okra tho' - oh, well.) Just incredible stuff. The woman is good. What else can I say.

God bless -

Thank everyone, especially those wonderful Mavens who instrumented this chat, and Thank you Lynn!. I was not here and so reading the transcript is very helpful (Thank you Karen!). We Mavens are a lucky lot!

Corinne, I hope that you have a place to land and that you will look back on this adventure with fond thoughts....May God bless you and keep you safe and happy.

Sorry I've been and continue to be so busy...Mavens Hugs to you all.

Rene, I have Lynn's book as well as Seed to seed, just haven't had time to read them yet...I am hopeful for more time tho'

How are my sisters, besides antsy for spring?

I am looking into seeds that are not only drought tolerant but short season as well...we have a weird climate and weirder micro climate where I live, so this is a must!

Looking forward to spring!

Annika - we are in a weird micro-climate here too, hoping for the best though - sure is good to hear from you:)
Okay, I did click on the chat button but all I saw was an empty screen, didn't want to just start typing because I was afraid I would end up interrupting, what did I do wrong?
Question - I remember seeing the glassine envelopes somewhere but now can't find them in a catalog, anyone know where to buy them? I would like to send the seeds I am giving in those, seems like they would be more weather proof, although I suppose zip-locs would work too.....
Tina - do you want bush beans or pole beans?
Karen - thanks again for transcribing the chat, I read every bit of it and I am so sorry I missed it

I know I've asked this before, but can I still put my garlic bulb in the ground this spring? I also need lavender in bulk. I need edible and whatever else that I can use to make some muscle wraps. I dont know where to look.

I will try to post a little tonight. I am so tired of talking/typing and phones that I am about to go postal. Cheryl, please remind me to check out that ice cream recipe, and I still need to post the cheesecake one. I'm beat. later gators.

Is this one of those threads I can just jump in right in the middle? I missed the whole chat thing, but believe I snagged Lynn's book from the library last time I was there, oddly enough.

For those kinda nearish me, have you heard or seen of Irish Eyes? They're near Ellensberg, and have a ton of shorter season seeds for stuff. Some organic, some not, no GMO. My local grocery store carries their seeds in the spring (which is how I learned of them a few years ago). :)

This is definitely one of those kind of chats! Glad you're here, Lanna. If you haven't had a chance to really look through it you will love Lynn's book. The chat is posted in the heirloom mavens henhouse. Here's the link: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=729

There are several girls here that are cold climate gardeners so they'll be happy to hear of Irish Eyes (if they haven't already).

Again, welcome, and make yourself at home!

HI Lanna! I love that name, it sounds sooo lavish.

HI girls! How is everyone today? We are in the midst of another blizzard here in grand OhiO. I am sick to death of it. I was so excited earlier this week to see brown grass in places that the snow had melted and here we go with another 12-17 inches of the stuff.... oh well I dont have to work tomorrow so I wont complain too much.

I so wanted to say/ask something great last night but words failed me. I was doing well to keep my eyes open much less think. I hope that I can make it to the library tomorrow to check that book out.

I'm in the throws of planning the SF (Sping fling). I feel like I've bit off more than I can chew, but that's all good. It keeps me on my toes. I've secured a food tent and tables. Thats it. I'm going with popcorn and herbal iced teas. Chillovers and some granola and organic yogurt. Stuff that is easy to walk and eat with. I'm limited with seating so I've decided to use straw bales for seating in some shaded areas. If anyone that is coming has an air popper for pop corn, may I borrow it?

I'm hoping for the bonfire and cookout on Friday still. We will all meet at my house Sat morning around 8:30. SF starts at 10am.

I'm off to try to design a poster and postcard flyers. Will talk with you later.

Hello again Mavens,
Busy afternoon, Just returned from town.. well the lake,actually.. The lake is in the city limits. Lake Euwana. Buster wanted to go for a walk so we had to take him.. he loves it there.... Gathered the eggs...Going to Library tomorrow to see if Lynn's book is there..Anyone hear of a Jostaberry bush? Friend told me about it being a great addition to my jam fruits. Got my sourdough ready to put inthe oven.. It looks really good.
More later...

Oh Lanna, bop right in! we are a chatty bunch of hens and love a new voice I am a cold/drought climate gardener here on the outskirts of Moscow and will give them (Irish-Eyes) a look-see. Thank you!

To all of you planting a half dozen or more tomatoes, I'm with you, I want to try anything that might have a chance of survival here

Last year I bought a bunch of seeds from Pinetree garden seeds, and I am not sure at all about them being non-gmo safe, tho' they are a wonderful company to order from. I hope that we can all convince them to go the safe seed route, they have a great seed book and are a small company in Maine. But I may have some seed to trade/give away once I count everything up....been super busy, so this may take a month to sort out. I'm sure, even with hoping to plant a bunch for the local food banks, that I will have left overs.

Denise? ~ haven't heard how you are doing?
Brenda, we miss you
Ruth, how are you? and Karen? Goodness! there are so many of us, this is wonderful!
Mama hen Dawn, you hang in there, you are our guiding light
Amy Grace, Teresa Sue and all of my near neighbours...Hello! Spring will be along eventually, we can but plot and plan and dream now...I hope that when we DO meet up at the coop, we can have one heck of a swell time, sooo looking forward to it!

Hi All,
I popped into the chat last night but wasn't able to stay long. Very hhelpful info. I'm going to look for Lynn's book at the libray. It has been busy here and will continue to be so until June I imagine. Not sure how much of a garden we will do as dd is getting married and right around planting time too.
Lots to keep me busy. Plus, work and those sweet grandbabies of course.
Hope everyone is well and having fun planning.
Corinne~ I hope you are doing fine with the move and all. Miss hearing from you.
Tina~ Hoping all is progressing smoothly for you and your adventure in moving and buying and selling.
Annika~ Feeling better now I hope.
Dawn and Karen you are doing a great job keeping us all up to date and informed.
Take care evryone and hello to all the ones I missed.

Hi, I'm new to all of this chatroom stuff and I have a question. What is a "maven"? and how do you become one?

I am getting my seeds from "Pinetree Garden Seeds". Most of them will be heirloom seeds. I am so glad about this thread and am learning from it. Even though I have gardening for over 50 years it is always fin to learn new things. Also my daughter and 2 granddaughters will be using some of the heirloom seeds.

Thanks for the help.

Hah, what do you know, it was Lynn Coulter's book that I got in my stack from the library last time. I do like the photos.

Dawn ~ Well, not really lavish... my name rhymes with banana as I learned when we moved when I was 7yo.

Annika ~ Yup, know the area well. Grew up in Pullman, and *gasp* crossed the border for college there. My mom still can't grow anything in her yard, it's the curse of where her house is. So she just comes up and I send goodies home with her. :)

Half dozen or more tomatoes? You mean varieties or plants? Because now I may be a little embarrassed about my little production here...

I've ordered from Irish Eyes several times the last few years, and have been happy so far. My order from them has shipped before any of the other places I ordered from on the same night, too (Heirloom Acres Seeds, Bountiful Gardens, Baker Creek and Territorial if you're curious). It's going to be like Christmas here in the next few weeks. Too bad I can't start my seedlings for another two months. But I'll be having fun sorting and resorting my seed collection. I'm incredibly excited about a supposed 40-day tomato IE has... if I can get a plant or two going in a big enough pot, I may have tomatoes in June/July this year! And that makes me do a happy dance.

Hey, anybody have the whole companion planting thing down to some degree?
I wouldn't mind some fresh eyes taking a look at my tentative (heehee, in pencil) garden plan for this year. Last year I almost planted potatoes next to my raspberries, and ended up planting the pole beans next to the garlic, oops. That crop was a sad, sad thing. Almost need a separate bed for garlic with how many things it doesn't do well with. And since my goal is to grow as much possible in my backyard, I really need/want the best yield I can get for canning/freezing/eating/whatever.

Elinor, welcome! You will so fit right in here. If you read the first couple of pages of this thread (don't try to read this all!), you will see Rene's (prosserfarmgirl) initial 'Danger of Extinction' post and the fire that was lit in us. At the top of page two you'll see where the name comes from.

How do you become one? You come to the DOE (done!), introduce yourself (done), express and interest in heirloom gardening (done) and you're a maven. We also have a henhouse, MJ's Heirloom Mavens (clever, no?), which all the farmgirls can read. To be able to post there, however, you will need to be in the sisterhood. You can go to the home page, click on "Become an Official Farmgirl Sisterhood Member Today" for more information.

Lanna, I'm bringing you in here too. Here is a link to the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide. http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=582 This will give you a lot of information about the mavens. It needs to be updated so I'll be doing that later today. Also, if you go to the Chapter Chatter forum you will fine The Mavens Haven newsletters. They give an overview of the topics discussed on the DOE for that week since it can be a pretty big job to read through them all when we have an active week.

Lanna (and Elinor), the mavens have a book club and guess what our next book selection is? "Carrots Love Tomatoes" which is a book about...................companion gardening. Lanna, you came on board at the perfect time. It is an excellent book. Dawn (deeredawn), our mother hen, has read it already and posted in her nest in the henhouse http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=724 .

Okay, that should be enough to keep you busy for a little while this morning! I know I speak for all of us when I say we are so-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o glad to have you both here!!!

God bless -

Good morning/evening Mavens,

It's a balmy 26 degrees here this morning......"topical heat wave, we're havin' a tropical heat waaaavvve, ta da ta......."*giggle* Sorry, I have spring fever,*sigh*. LOL

Welcome Lanna and Elinor!!!!!! You're gonna love it here, and I'm warning you, it's/we're addictive, lol.

Lanna, what "little" town in Idaho are you at? I'm about an hour's drive north of Moscow/Pullman.

I've been working on my seed/ plant order. I am going to get plant starts from SSE, simply because I don't have any place to raise viable seedlings where we are now. I'm also going to order seed from Baker's Creek(trying to divide my money between these two very worthy businesses)for my food storage. Very, very small garden this year because all the time is going to be spent getting our Idaho homestead ready for us. I'm starting to get excited!

Annika, I'm looking forward to meeting with you, Rene', and Amy Grace. Hey, maybe if Lanna is close enough she could come too.

Dear, dear Corinne, not a day goes by that I don't think of you. I am thinking good thoughts for you and Raymond. You will land on your feet, like the proverbial cat. Take heart dear friend.

"Hi"*waving* to all my dear Maven friends.

Hey, TS! Mornin', Ralph! Goodnight, Corinne! (Haven't typed that for a long time..............sorry )

E & L, I forgot to mention that Teresa Sue is our book club coordinator and does a fantastic job. So be watching for more info about "Carrots Love Tomatoes" in the henhouse....and here.

Guess what I discovered last night? My herb & flower order from SSE didn't take. Yesterday afternoon I went online to see if the two orders had shipped and only the veggie order was listed. It wasn't charged to our Mastercard either. The same thing happened a few weeks ago when I ordered the study materials for our small group at church. I went online to check the status and nuttin' - nada - zippe - the big goose egg. Okay, maybe one time it was my fault (even though hubby was right here with me both times and watched me place the orders), but twice? I don't think so. I'll be calling SSE today. Dad burn slow-speed dial-up internet service............Argh!

God bless -
