Good Afternoon maven friends.. I have been lazy today.. made a trip to town to the library & Bank, our Library did not have Lynn's book so I am ordering it from Amazon..I did find a couple others I thoguht sounded interesting though..."This Organic Life" Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader.. Barbara Kingsolver had endorsed it.. Also "Gardening when it counts".. Growing food in hard times.. SO I have some weekend reading to take with me to SIL for a SuperBowl party ( I do not watch Football) It will be a trip for Dh tovvisit his Brother. We will be leaving Saturday morning to return Monday. I may or may not take the laptop so It may be Tuesday before I post next week.. You all have a great weekend.

Dehydrating link?!? What did I miss?
My Christmas present from hubby this year was a dehydrator - complete with 8 trays, 8 screens and 8 fruit leather trays. Can't accuse the guy of not knowing me (and his "present" was a new-to-him chainsaw to purchase when he found a good deal or found one he wanted - I don't shop for those). So I'm quite excited to take that dehydrator for a test run this year.

I really like "Gardening When it Counts." To me it had a good amount of information. Rain barrels or just more land (just 1-5 acres, nothing too extreme) are definitely on my wish list, but not in the very near future (oh, like dreaming of a greenhouse to have things year round despite the feet of snow).

Last year was my first attempt at saving seed. Some on purpose, some by accident/luck/happenstance. Like the carrots and parsley - I just wanted to see what would happen when they flowered up (and holy moly, they got *huge*!), and lo and behold I had a boatload of seeds. Saved way too many varieties of tomatoes - I think I only had something like 15-17 varieties (and maybe 75-80 plants?). So we'll see how that all works out this year. Really need to get my hands on Seed to Seed again - need to figure out when I need to plant my corn so they don't cross (well, or maybe not, we'll see...) and figure out the lettuces since I believe you can only do one variety at a time.

I got two of my seed orders today, yay! My 5yo is so excited about sunflowers this year, so he's almost as enthusiastic as I am. Every time I come out with a packet of flower seeds he partially explodes with happiness.

Hey, Lillian - saw you posted to the Garden Gate thread. (You must've done it within the last 5 minutes because I saw it on "What we're talking about" on the home page....okay, later than that now cuz I got interrupted.)

I'm fighting back from the flu that Robbie had the beginning of the week. It finally got hold of me last night and I've spent most of the day in bed. Since I couldn't do much other than read I started "Carrots Love Tomatoes" and "The Omnivore's Dilemma." Rene', I figured since my head already feels like it's in a vice, this is the perfect time to read Michael Pollan.

Back to the Garden Gate.......the original post is from 4 years ago, as is the article Clare references. It's pretty cool when she wonders if anyone will take up the cause..............and here we are!!!

Tina (and anyone else interested in dehydrating your harvest), here's the link: http://info.ag.uidaho.edu/Resources/PDFs/PNW0397.pdf It's a Pacific Northwestern Extension article, "Drying Fruits and Vegetables" from one of the MEN articles (per the CD set). I was going to post it here and then forgot. Sorry, guys..............

God bless -

Lillian, still didn't see what you posted but I thought I'd better clarify a bit more. I decided to go back to the beginning of the forum just to see what was out there. I just didn't have the energy to make the trek across the hall to get back to bed. I should've been more descriptive but just didn't have it in my.

Don't have much left right now but want to let Lanna know you didn't miss anything. TS posted about getting a dehydrator the other day and I e-mailed her for more info. Then I found this article in Mother Earth News and sent it to her. I meant to post it in the henhouse but as I said, I forgot. Nothing new there, heh heh. Anyways, I'm getting a dehydrator for my birthday this year. I bought several years ago to dehydrate apples for Christmas decorations. That didn't happen but I finally took it out of the box this summer to use for tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and maybe other stuff, can't remember right now. Anyway, I loved it and I'm sure you will too. Yours sounds like a great one. More details, please? Does it have a temperature gauge? I'm looking for one that will go down to 115-degrees so it won't kill the enzymes. Enjoy your books too - sounds like you got some good ones.

Okay, mavens, I'm done. Taking the box o' tissues with me and heading to bed. Sleep well.......'night, Ralph.........mornin', Corinne (hope things are going okay as this is the big weekend).........

God bless -

It's a Nesco/American Harvest Gardenmaster, and the temps go from 95*F-155*F. It does sound a bit like an airplane taking off so it needs to be down in the den or basement when it's going, but it's fun. Hubby just did his research and found a killer deal with all those extra tray addition thingies. Plus apparently I can put up to something crazy like 10-15 more trays on it and everything will still dry groovy. I dried herby noodles in it a few weeks ago on the lowest setting for the fun of it. The kids were sure excited. I can't wait to be able to dry strawberries and peaches as snacks for dreary January/February next year...

Lillian - I switched to Amish Paste on your recommendation, so probably you won't want to trade there:) also got a variety called Marmande from Baker Creek and a french cherry tomato from Baker creek. The Marmande is supposed to do well in cooler weather, thought I would give it a shot.
That's funny, we have a dehydrator on our project list this year, we are going to try to make one

Hi Mavens,

Hope everyone is well and good. I need a favor from one or two of you. As DH and I are making plans to work on our property so we can move there next year, I'm realizing just how intensly busy we are going to be really soon. I am afraid I'm just not going to have the time to be the Maven Badgebadger and Bookclub coordinator. At least not for a while. Are any of you interested in taking on one or both of those?

Happy birthday, TS, you marvelous maven! You share your birthday with someone very special, my dad. If you have as much fun on your birthday as my dad had in life you will have a fantastic day!!!

You've done a fantastic fabu job as badger/coordinator. Go where you're needed with our blessings but don't go away. Not that we'd let you - we'd track you down, woman! For my part, I have my hands full with the newsletter and getting our own garden and house in shape. I know there's a maven or two out there that would be a great fit though. We have such a diverse and talented group here. Right, Rene'?

Back to bed for me - still not 100%. I'm probably at about 50% heading toward 60 at the moment.

God bless -
