I just popped in, Returned from Medford, Bypassed the Costco trip as we really didn't need that much.. had a nice lunch in Jacksonville, Oregon. Fabulous clam chowder & Dh had a suoer turkey sandwich on hearty white homemade bread w/ cranberries baked in it.. Yummy.. Won't need a big dinner tonight.. Left overs for sure. I have been making a lis tof the veg seeds I wnat toorder & will probably order from Seeds of Change... Checked the chickens, Refilled their water and checked the temp inside 40 degrees so they will be warm enough tonight. So far two of the 4 are laying and I am thinking the buff Orphs are the ones doing it..2 nice eggs today.. I had a little egg talk with the Ruby & Dottie The Rhode Island Red & bardred rock.. They didn't even look at me.. Guilt ridden I am sure..

our gals have been on strike now for a couple of months..not enough sun light even here in Florida..they have to have 12 hrs of sunlight in order to lay.
figure by next month they'll be back to normal...I hope anyhow.

Well these girls are getting about 12 and I am leaving the heat lamp on all night.. I know once the days get warmer too it will help. It is to be in the low 40's over the weekend. but gets doen 18-22 at night. Winter is far from over, but as long as we get these all day Blue skys & no clouds or snow or rain I'm happy.

Surprise! The newsletter is posted! I have a scrapbooking thing tomorrow morning and didn't want to make you wait. I also didn't want to get up at 4am to get it done!

Happy birthday, Ms. Lilly! Hope it's your best one ever!

Lora, hope you're doing okay with all your bumps and bruises - although if you got the arnica gel, there shouldn't be too many of those. Do something special for yourself this weekend. You deserve it, girlfriend!

Welcome, Julie!

Hi, Diana!

To all my sisters, especially Ruth (WOO HOO!), hope you're warm and sunny, inside and out!

God bless -

the collective farm women melon sprouts are doing good..some are starting to put out the little serrated leaves in the middle of the first two initial leaves that are round/but they are doing good/yes I have been babying them. Amazing how fast the peat pots dry out indoors when the heat is running. Also..the pride of barbados sprouts are doing better..silly me..when I found that they had sprouted..I accidentally set the seeds back into the soil upside down! the root end was sticking up and the seed husk was down in the soil..poor seeds!LOL..silly me! so..I switched them around the other day..ha..and finally..they are starting to push the seed husk off and develop a set of leaves to push the husk off.
gee whiz..you'd have thought I'd have gotten that right..but I was just so excited that the seeds of this particular plant were even doing anything.
As the seeds are real hard seeds and about the size of a pinky fingernail.(the catalog when I bought them said that they were a bit hard to grow, and do best in a hothouse..so I'm delighted that they have done anything at all)I had to cut into the seed with a knife and then soak them for about 3 days. So yeah..I have been babying those too.Now that the root part of the plant is actually in the soil now..I expect these ones to start doing much better..ha.(yes I crack myself up sometimes)
Note to self: I NEED!!!! a greenhouse! waaah.
-----------------
We had a hard freeze last night here..temps got down to about 20.I did cover the plants I had in pots outside with a couple of throws. The canna lily plant I had by the back fence took a beating, but has some nice green left down near the base..so I will wait though to trim it back as we are expected to have more freezing nights through the end of the week.
At least the day time is a bit warmer.about 54 here today.
----------
Hope everyone is having a great day.
---------------
Anyone else want any heirloom okra seed?
Karen was the only one to email me so far. I have about 5-6 more packets of them.
They are the Dwarf Green Pod variety.
email me if you want a packet.
----------------
hugs to everyone..stay warm.

Happy belated Lillan and so very sorry to hear about kitty. I had to have my Salem put down this past summer. He was 9. I don't really know what was wrong with him, but he had tummy troubles his whole life. There towards the end, he was VERY grouchy and would attack for no reason. I miss him, but I do have a whole herd outside to take care off. Currently there are 2 sitting the window above my desk wondering why they can see me, but can't get to me.

My week just keeps getting better (sarcasim) With the bitter cold temps - our pipes froze then burst. We had the plumber out this afternoon $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and he has to come back on Monday. We will have no water for the whole weekend. We currently have a rented salamander blowing hot air under the house to keep it from getting any worse, but the water is completely shut off. I can't even water the horses. I am going to have to dump some snow in the tank and hope the heater melts it.

My bruises are doing fine except when I "bump" them again. Lliam fell in the carport and has a bruised elbow - Bobsy Twins!!

I am going to an auction tonight just take a me break. I listed a bunch of patterns on the etsy site if anyone is interested. I am cleaning out the craft room so I can have room to sew those aprons!!

Welcome to all the new Mavens!!! Glad to have you here.

Diana, Yes, I am that truck inspector. I know everyone thinks we work for DOT, but we are actually a division of the Indiana State Police. Make sure you pay that UCR fee!! We are supposed to write citations for any that are not paid from 2008 and 2009. I have only had to write one so far.

I worked a crash on Thursday - one truck ran into the back of another. No one was hurt, but the guy who hit, was in America from Canada looking for work. I felt so bad for him - his truck was put out of service because of the damage to the front end. I didn't cite him for anything and neither did the trooper who took the crash report. We both just wrote warnings.

Anyhooooooo,

heading to the auction now. Have a great evening, gals.

Good evening y'all, I'm in Cheney at one of my daughters, babysitting my granddaughter. I've missed y'all, I just needed some time, haven't been very chatty, starting to feel like my old self again.

Got a couple a great things to share, one, I was able to buy a food dehydrater for $25. I've had one like it before, it only had three trays tho, used the heck out of it, until I just wore it out, lol. This one is like new and has about 6 trays. I can't wait till I have a surplus of something to dry!

The other thing is my DH got me a spinning wheel for my birthday!!!! I'm so excited, I learned on one that was made from pvc pipe, so this one will seem like a dream to spin on.

So many new Mavens, WOW!, welcome to all of you.

Sounds like our eastern Mavens are getting the weather we've been putting up with for the first part of the winter, my condolances!!!!!!! It's still winter here, but at least it got up to 32 degrees here for about an hour today. The fog is really bad though and is supposed to hang around till Tuesday.

I need to go back and read through all the posts so I can remember whats going on, lol

Oh, Tina thanks for the offer of okra, but I'm gonna pass. I'll eat it if it's dipped in cornmeal and fried, but it's one of the few vegetables I'm not too crazy about. I don't think it even gets hot enough here to grow it any way.

Hello Mavens!!

We have another cold one here today. We woke up to snow. It was supposed to turn to rain but didn't. We have quite a bit and it's still snowing.

I am hibernating today and working on the orders for the owl hats.

I am still waiting for my seed catalogs. I may just go online and order from there.

Just want to let you know~Hubby has a paypal account~I don't~he got an email that was pfishing. It said there was unauthorized activity on his paypal and asked him to follow the link and sign on immediately. The link wasn't for paypal, though. Just be careful if you get one.

Good Morning Mavens,
It was frosty here this morning too. The chickens have just come out of their cozy studio and are now sunning on the lawn. It is only about 34 degrees right now. Brrrrrrrr I hav e been waiting for 40 degrees to spread some straw on the garden. Dh is going to help me, we decided to spread a couple bales (A). for the good of the garden & (B). to keep the feet of the chickens from caking with mud. We will haul in some sand later before we prepare the garden for planting. Definately when it warms up.

HI ladies! I hope today find you well. I"ve been researching and reading about companion gardening and I've posted in the henhouse. Me thinks that I will def try that out this year.

So what's on everyone's agenda today? I'm going to try and clean up a little around here. I have to repair a page in Audrey's scrapbook and finish a couple of small projects. I sure dont have any ambition, but I feel that once this weather breaks around here I will have more. When its 20 below and blowing cold, you dont feel up to anything. I want to bake some bread, but with the woodstove being in the kitchen its around 100 degrees and I seriously cant take the heat, so I stay out of the kitchen....pun intended. So there goes all my baking ideas.

I went to the bulk food store and got some sun dried tomatoes cuz they looked good, but I have no idea what to do with them. I also picked up some buttermilk powder....no what? haha. I need to go back to get some organic cream cheese/sour cream so I can make some Valentine Cheesecakes. I make mine in a blender and pour in a springform pan. Perfect everytime. It even makes its own crust. My kinda baking!

Welllllp, I'm gonna git. HAve a great sunday and i will talk with ya'll later.

Diana - I usually make it to Moscow to the co-op once a month or so but it has been about 3, I am having withdrawals even though I work in a similar type store!!
It must be a grandbaby weekend - ours is here visiting overnight. We got my old crib from my mom that my son also used so she has her own bed now. I forget how tiring a little one is - she is 8 months, it hasn't been that long since my son was little but man am I out of practice. You should have seen me trying to pay for a crib sheet at the JC Penneys yesterday, squirming child, stuff going everywhere....
Try and stay warm everybody!!

Amy and Diana~ It would be fun to all meet up at the Moscow food co-op on day a month. I would so be up for that.
Dawn, I woke up this morning not feeling well, so I am laying low, working a little on my lap top and catching up on the stack of reading I want to get done. We have a new prosserfarmchick that teaches RAW food living... she is so bright.. what is that saying "when the student is ready the teacher will come".. certainly seems to be true. I love that she has shown up in this amazing woman. She is also having, "the class" read AVM.. So here we go again, I feel like it is the common thread.
