Thanks for that website, Rene'. It's always fun to see the face behind a book.

I've been out shoveling the mailbox out, wonder if there is an apron in there somewhere?

It's 1 degree out. I still have to bring in wood and get the mail before I take off my insulated overalls and snowpacs. I thought I'd warm up a few minutes before I undertook those things and I have found out something. It's really quite cozy sitting here in my freezing office wearing insulated overalls and snowpac boots, LOL! Beats freezing in here in my jammies and robe!

Well the mailbox is shoveled out, the mail in, the wood in, the bird feeders filled. Now I can get a few other things done before I head up to my sewing room.

But first I have to tell you my "big red truck" moment. I have outdone you Dawn. Ruth rec'd the moniter today. Oh joy! But, I forgot to put the SECOND cord in, the one that connects to the electric. I feel so bad. I made sure I put the cord in that connects printer to computer. I am a simple woman. I understand simple tools. Like shovels, hoes, rakes, even pointy sticks, but anything more complicated than that, I'm lost. I think I'll go eat a piece of fudge before I throw the rest away, sigh.

My Cold weather gardening book from Amazon is supposed to ship Mon I think, or I'm supposed to get it Monday, I can't wait for it though. We can compare different things to try to get our plants going.

Cold weather gardening? So does this mean you start your garden in the winter. What about frost. This is all fairly new to me. We have not taken much time on our gardens in the past. I feel like I am moving in slow motion here since the holidays. I either need more sleep or my blood sugar levels are getting messed up from all goodies that were out and about at the holidays. Think I need more exercise....maybe.
Hope all you girls who have been getting the snow are able to clear a path and if not may you be keeping warm and busy.

while everyone is busy talking gardens..I'm busy tearing my house apart getting things boxes up..and sorted out..waaahh!
but..I do have some melon seeds that have all..yes every one of them that were 5 yrs old! have sprouted in a baggy on top of paper towelling.!! yikes..but this is good information to know though..I can now attest to the fact that melon seeds do indeed keep their viability for 5 yrs after the "plant by" date.So...that was good to know.
oh my gosh! I have collective farm woman melon seeds to get planted asap..but today it is so overcast and yucky.icky outside.
have to hurry and weed out the one raised flower bed and get the seeds put into little peat pots then let them grow a wee bit..then into the ground.
-----------
but..yeah..things are in a bit of disarray here..and I'm trying to keep order here...sigh.
If any of you have moved before you know how it feels when you want to be gardening..but the reality is..you won't hopefully be in the house long enough to really seriously plot and plan out things like you have before..in a way it has a bitter sweet feeling to it..strange..but at the same time I have to keep telling myself that at a new home I shall have a totally new slate to work with and can be creative with..if I miss one growing season it isn't the end of the world.
But..I will "try" to grow a few things..when I can find the time to slip them in amongst all the other things that simply "must" be done around here.
-----------
I can at least look at my big stack of seed catalogs and dream eh? :0)
----------
Have a great day Mavens!!

Cheryl, I don't have any first-hand knowledge about the book but it's written by an SSE member and is recommended by MaryJane so that speaks pretty highly of the book. It's next on my list to get. They say the second edition takes you full cycle from saving to planting to saving. TS, do you have this one?

Hey everybody - no garden news or ideas today but I had a really cool thing happen. I was thinking about one of my best friends from high school recently, she has lived on the other side of the state for years now, then saw in the newsletter from our Local Yarn Shop that her sister was now working and teaching classes there. Then today at work one of my employees was talking (endlessly) about her boyfriend and his family and mentioned that they had lived on the same street as my friend which got me thinking about her again. So I'm getting ready to leave work, go charging out of the back room and there she is - just moved back to town. Seems like serendipity sort of.....Funny how people you need to see or meet always seem to turn up right when you are ready to learn the lesson from them. Kind of like you guys - I was really ready to be part of a community of like-minded farmgirls and voila!! There you were....Sorry, getting all mushy and teary eyed again.
Anyway, it reminds me to not take things for granted.
And speaking of that I started my gratitude journal on the first, really good exercise of the positive thought muscles
Talk soon,
Amy Grace

Oh and Tina - my sympathies, I absolutely hate packing/moving. My son is now 16 and this house is the 14th place he and I have lived, and we have been here 4 years. We moved a lot for a while, no more!! Is your move going to be to someplace where you can stay put?

Hi,
yes the move will be to somewhere where I see us staying put for oh..about 5 yrs in one house I'd think...then eventually transferring to another house in the area at some point in time.but yes..in that area for a good while. We stayed in this place for 9 yrs..but prior to that we moved 10 times in the space of 10 yrs..oh my!yes...I hate moving too..but..the good thing is..I am really really looking forward to this move(although it is hard work to pack things up..and some days I wish there were 2-3 of me..ha..I'll get it done)..and starting afresh with a clean slate, a new yard to garden in/a new home to make homey..and the area we are going to is known as the "horse capitol of the world"..(sorry Kentucky..but this place just may be beating you out on that claim now..ha)..loads of horse shows/events and lots of horse farms..including the Gypsy Vanner, Arabians and such.
Anyhow..the area is very green thinking, and has very nice agricultural type programs for both children and adults.
And..the county just had a meeting to bring in a large farmer's market to the area..they have one already and want to bring in more.
I am hoping to be able to be involved in some capacity with at least one of the farmer's markets in the area..and of course many more plans for my children and our family in general.(a very nice community college for the kids/my son wishes to eventually study the culinary arts..even at age 8 he has been mentioning this for 4 yrs now and has it set in his mind that he "will" be a chef..usually kids that age do not keep talking about something like this and keep it in their minds and have it firmly rooted in their thoughts that this is what they will be..but he is determined that no one will change his mind..and I don't aim to/he's had it firmly planted in his mind for 4 yrs now..so I think it is there to stay..ha... my children have always been encouraged to "go for it" whatever they want to do we try to see that they have the means to obtain their goals...and the community college there has a very good culinary department..so that will be nice.
Also they have very nice 4-h programs and youth livestock events that the children can be involved with.
And for my oldest daughter..a few ballroom dance studios so that she can continue with her ballroom dance classes if she wishes to.
So.. yes..we are all really looking forward with anticipation at what the future will hold.
But yes..I need 2-3 of me about now..ha.

Morning Mavens- Today is catch up day at the house. It is amazing how fast it can become dis-organized! So a quick catch up and hello then I am off and running again.

Cheryl- I have Seed to Seed. I haven't read it all of the way through, but have read bits and pieces. What were you wanting to know about it?

Tina- I agree packing is the pits. We are hoping to re-locate in a few years and I am not looking forward to packing everything!

Amy- How wonderful, I hope you can renew that frienship.

Dawn- I have been trying to stay away form the chicken catalogs because I really do have enough chickens, but I wouldnt mind having another "color" to add to the flock. I am finding it really hard to resist that phone #.

Rene- A big Thank you for the Famgirl U info. You put in so much effort!!

Karen- As usual great newsletter!

Everyone else- you are in my thoughts.

I am getting ready to place my seed orders, and I am hoping someone may be able to locate tomato seed for me. A few years ago I grew Lillian's Yellow Heirloom tomatos, they are huge. Any ways I am looking for a source for them and haven't found any yet. I am still waiting on a few catalogs to arrive (bountiful garden, peaceful valley) yet. If there are any ideas please let me know. Thanks.

Lillian

Morning my dear little Mavens!

It is Sunday and I am sitting down to request a few more catty's and talk to you a bit. I would've posted yesterday but my husband surprised me with a trip to Berlin, Ohio the largest settlement of Amish in the USA. I've been there a lot but we back roaded it (stayed away from the 'center' of town) and enjoyed the sights. I saw many young girls selling Amish Baskets and as much as I wanted to purchase one, I had to remind myself that Mattie and her clan would be coming around soon and I can get one off her. We had lunch at a diner that rivaled any oragnic, gourmet cooking I've ever had. Porkchops, tater and gravy, homemade bread, apple butter, coleslaw, and hoho cake. I would like to eat there everyday of my life until the day I die. I went to a fabric store and found a pattern for a Santa and pumpkin/acorn pinc cushions.... Lora, you would've died and gone to heaven at the amount of wool felting stuff! The quilting section made me homesick for Corrine and TS..... I would love nothing more than to share that place with all of you at once! We also stopped at an antique store that gave me nothing but sticker shock. I swear, the only thing I found in there I could afford was a yard stick. All the pieces were old German pieces upwards to 15 grand...... I swear, just cuz it's "amish" owned.....We came home to hungry puppies and fed them, laid on the couch and fell asleep. Well, after I read the last of this book I'm reading with CabinCreek Kentucky Frannie and cried myself to sleep. Oh, sometimes I really miss my mom. My mom and I used to go to that craft store in Berlin and spend hours and money!
TS: the basket does not have the plastic dividers. Sorry.
Lillian: just order the catalog. Either that or I will just send you one! I wrote all the captions to the breed descriptions and I'm even "modeling" a hatchery shirt!
Well ladies, I have work to do. I have catty's to request, and projects that need finishing. I have seeds to bundle up and whatever else. I will be at work tomorrow 9-5 EST. fun fun.

Tina - wow it sounds like a lot of opportunities in the new place, that should help when you get bogged down with packing:)
Dawn - thinking about you missing your mom, just know that we all love you!!
Just checking in this morning, not much going on today so I am hoping to get some things done - not optimistic though, house is still full of boys, too cold to any outdoor projects other than basic survival, like sweeping off my car that I can't drive yet, and starting it up, shoveling, etc.
I am going a little crazy, just looked at the calendar and it has been 4 weeks since I have been alone in the house, what with the holiday, the weather, the work/school closures, the carpooling......
I was starting to organize a little sewing project this morning and there is DH, "hey let me show you this (fill in the blank)"
Oh well - I have Thursday and Friday off work and weatherwise they should be at school and work so maybe I can find my sanity:)

Happy New Year, Mavens!!

Sorry I haven't been on for a bit. I have been on vacation (didn't go anywhere) for the last 2 weeks. We CLEANED house. I have been working on badges and trying to finish the book AVM. I still have 2 chapters left. I am also looking into enrolling at Clayton College of Natural Health. I had been taking classes at IvyTech, but I need something I can do on my schedule, not theirs. Distance learning seems like the best bet.

Lliam's school has called for a case conference on the 8th. We may be taking him out of Hoosier Academy and putting him back at his home school in Alexandria. We'll see.

I got a disturbing phone call last night about a friend of mine. She has cancer. It started out as a small spot on her liver about the size of a fingernail. That was in early December. She went to the doctor last week for a biopsy and it has spread to her liver. She is only 50. Please pray for her. She needs all the help she can get right now. She is staying with her daughter while the doctors decide what they can do.

I took the first load of "stuff" from my step-dad's antiques business to the auction Friday. Had the back of the truck full. The wind was blowing like crazy and mom didn't even try to help me hold the door. I wasn't a happy camper. After that was done, I had my son help me clean up the yard from the ice storm they had a couple of weeks ago. Instead of carrying all the debris to the burn pile, I made stacks around the yard. I had to move 2 huge limbs from against the house (one I swear weighed more than me!). Instead of saying thanks, she wanted to know when I was coming back up so I could move the stacks out of the yard. WHAT!? Really? I know she's going thru a rough patch right now, but dang.

I am so ready to start gardening. I have been soaking up the Baker's Creek cattie for days. It's the only one I have right now. Lance is itching to order bee's. Those won't ship until late spring or early summer, but he's ready now.

I had a get-together with a few friends today. I spent most of yesterday in the kitchen. I made blueberry cream muffins, banana chocolate chip muffins, chocolate peanut biscotti, chicken salad, meatballs in cranberry sauce, lil smokies in barbeque sauce, cheddar fondue with organic bread for dipping, honey butter and a strawberry cheesecake trifle. Most of it was or had organic ingredients. I tried really hard to make as much as possible from organic or all natural products. I purchased most of it at Meijer since our little grocer's don't really carry anything organic or local. I am going to find out if they are willing to sell organic produce in the summer if my garden produces well this year. Wish me luck. I am also going to try to get my friend's produce in there as well. They have 30 acres that they are trying to turn into an organic farm. Last year they went to a bunch of farm markets. I do hope they have more success this year.

love and hugs,

Wow Lora - I want to come to your house for a snack, that all sounded delicious. I will keep your friend in my prayers, and your mom and you too, sounds like she is having a hard time looking past the immediate and you are the one who is having to take care of it all.
Hope all goes well with the school:)
Just a little stir crazy here, I'm afraid to get too excited about gardening yet, last year we had so much snow and it just kept going. I was ready to work outside at the beginning of March, but we had snow at the end of March.
I did get a fair amount of stuff done today, although I dragged my feet the whole way
Happy Sunday evening
Teresa Sue and Annika - I hope you both can stay home tomorrow, more snow on the way
