Yea, it's so embarassing/infuriating living less than an hour from Monsanto headquarters. I'm going to stop there or I'll get too worked up to nap!

TS, one of the guys in our small group was talking to Robbie and somehow they got on the topic of seeds/gardening/who knows. Greg was saying how amazing it was that scientists can now modify seeds to make them stronger. I know my eyes got huge and Robbie said, "That technology isn't all a good thing. It's got some scary sides to it." And off we went on heirloom seed education 101!

No, I was confused, I thought Robbie and Greg were chatting in Tina's chat room with the Mavens, but I re-read your post and I get it now, I get it now, LOL.

TS, re: getting it now. Did you have that morning cuppa yet? Maybe you're due for a refill. Or a nap.

I only had 1/2 a cuppa this morning before I had to go to the cafe and fry chicken all morning. I had another when I came home, but, methinks I could use another. That and I need to build a fire in the stove. It's pretty bad when you think 30 degrees is warm, lol

Isn't it so cool? Just when the gardening chatting gets revved up again we get three new mavens! Four counting Sue but Corinne said she needs to wait til the first of the year to jump in as she's been swamped during the holidays.

We've been playing with the temperature in our house since getting the last propane bill - almost $800! Our wood supply is lower than we'd like it right now too. One of our neighbors up the road cleared some land to make room for a shed and cut the trees up for firewood a couple of years ago and we were the beneficiaries. I think we got lazy - used up most of it last year without cutting more. Oh well, live and learn.

I think at this point they're HHM's because they are definitely interested in gardening with heirlooms but I don't think any of them are in the sisterhood - yet!

We have no choice but to heat with wood. My husband is really good about keeping us in wood, we have about five years supply, but he says you never know when you might have a year you can't get wood.

Even if they are HHMs, four is quite a jump for our chapter numbers. Well, that's what we are all about, right, informing as many people as possiable.

Robbie has pretty much used up all the dead wood near the house. He's going to start cutting down on the lower land when we can get the beater down there.

A jump of four is 25%!!! It's just darn exciting!!! I'm hoping that as farmgirls' minds turn to gardening we'll keep getting more interest in the mavens. You're doing a great fabu job over on the Garden Gate by the way.

Okay, TS, either you're posting a novel or you've gone for coffee and forgot to come back. Either way, Robbie's home and I need to sign off. Loved chattin' with ya, girlfriend! Let's do it again sometime.

Good afternoon, mavens!!!
I can't wait to get started with planting. I only have the SSE catalog from 2008. I'm not a member so I will call and try to get a new catalog. I also need to get moving on the other catalogs.
I have picked only a few seeds I would like. Last years garden was a dud but I didn't plant heirlooms. I don't want to do more than I can handle. I have a small greenhouse~it's the one from MaryJanes magazine. I wonder if I could start my seeds in there.
I have missed all my friends. I am still waiting for the monitor so it is hard to get on here and chat with my friends. Hopefully, it will be here soon but I'm not sure because our mail has been so slow. They held a couple of packages for more than 4 days for processing. I'm not sure why. Hopefully it will be here soon and I can check in daily. Teresa Sue~Thank you again for sending it out for us. We really appreciate it.

Welcome to all the new girls in the group. Can't wait to get to know you all better.

Blessings,
Ruth

My Henry Fields and Gurney's just went in the recycling too - I'm a little behind because I just now got the mail for the last few days. The plows dumped 12 plus feet of snow in front of our mailbox so the regular letter carrier was holding our mail, then there was a sub who took it out, then they were optimistic and took it out so every time I have stopped by the PO the mail was out on a run but couldn't be delivered.
Karen - I will be applying for the Pantry badge. If I ever get a day off when my DH actually goes to work I will get caught up - I know I'm qualifying for a bunch of badges - however he is stir crazy from missing so much work so he is making me crazy. He just spent about half an hour following me while I cleaned the pantry.
