Rene, you are AWESOME! You make such good points. I'm always so excited to read your posts. Men and women are wired differently (back to the endocrine issue) and that's a really good thing. If we were the same, how would we grow? The magnets don't attract when the same polarized sides are brought together, why should we be attracted to someone that's exactly like us? That's redundunt (my favorite word). And to quote (sort of) Stephen Covey "When two people think the same way, one of them isn't necessary."

Dawn, the fact that Jerr came back and to mention that means he was thinking about what you said. That's a very good thing and means he values your opinion. (And you value his even though in the heat of the moment you'd rather just wop him up side the head.) People don't like boredom but they hate change, especially when it's forced on them. Just do your thing, let him do his, then just talk about how it's going. Enjoy the journey.

And enjoy the weekend. We'll try to hold down the henhouse without ruffling too many feathers.

God bless -

Thanks Karen. I have just been "on the farm truck" a while...I also know that when we are trying to "bust out" things always seem to show up to trip us up. We can choose if it stops us or teaches us to push through and become more clear. This is a great group of women....

Wow, Mavens, to paraphrase the 70's, that's some heavy stuff.
Okay, Dawn, my husband, who was raised in a small farming community in Wyo, has been telling me since the early 70's , whilst I was reading Organic Farming & Gardening, that it was impractical to farm that way. I love my husband. He is a good man. Comes from a Mormon background, can work anyone under the table, as honest as the day is long. Given that, I will say he is wrong, wrong, wrong about organic gardening not being a viable way to feed people. The agriculture community of this country has been so brainwashed by the USDA, our land grant colleges, pesticide/chemical/insectide/seed companies, not to mention all those people who sell all that great big equipment that they only believe what they have been told all these years. Farming 8000 acres is not the american farm dream, it's a nightmare. Small family farms, diversified farms are going to be the salvation of our agricultural system in this country. If they can do it in Europe, we can do it here. It is just going to take education and willingness from people like us, MJ's Heirloom Mavens to start making the inroads. Believe me, for any of you in my age group- I'm 53- Organic HAS come a long way baby. There just is so much more to do. I agree that we have to start with ourselves and just go from there. Who was it who said "Be the change you want to see in the world" Was that Ghandi? Don't remember but it is the truth.
And Rene is right by the way, about being what you are supposed to be. Far better to have the courage to be your true self with your convictions that a pale comparision.
Last but not least, I for one would rather eat less organic, natural food that a whole lotta chemical laden fake food.
Well, again, I got People to Mow. I'll check in later.

Okay, one more thing before I go mow, hey, they're not going anywhere.
Yes, I can do a t-shirt design.
This just hit me tho, once our henhouse is up, let's have each of us say exactly what our commitment to this group will entail. Exactly like Dawn stated earlier. Each of us will have a different take on it for sure, depending on our circumstances, but it will be in writing, kind of like our own personal misson statement. Any thoughts on that?

I think I already said mine back a page. This has been a pretty heavy time as we realize what we are doing. I'm proud of each and everyone of us for having the guts to stand up and say what they feel and think. If we can't weather a few storms, we ain't going no where and I'm tellin' all of you we are a bunch of hot chicks and can do what ever we set our minds to. Teresa Sue I'm 48, not too far behind you here and it all HAS come a long way. I've been casting about for a life of some kind, been complacent but not happy for too long, and it's time to do something important with my life. I want to save heirlooms and start my own nursery one day soon as I said. I hope that we can all respect each others commitment to the group and continue with this wonderful energy that we've started. I've been lovin it!

my comment about organics/heirloom growing/back to the basics and so forth as some folks state it "not being a viable way to feed folks"
well I just want to say.."however in the world did our ancestors make it then?" Some of them grew quite large gardens that more than sustained their families, with some left over.
I think that too many... sad to say... have been indoctrinated with a lot of hokey thinking.Perhaps the chemicals have frazzled quite a lot of brain cells over the years?? hmm?

Teresa Sue,
I really like that idea. It gives us the oppertunity to each put our goals out in front of ourselves and shift them as we learn and grow... Great Idea...

Hullo Rene! I'm working on this massive list of links and after that a book list, is there any idea when the hen house will be up so that I can post them there first? It would be easier to post them there first, because I have better editing functions...I'm not a blog goddess unfortunately, and I'm not so good at editing my boo-boos on blogger

Not a pressure, just a curious Annika thing

As a side note, I think that posting our goals and expectations will help everyone in the long run and I look forward to reading them all.

Edit : Thank you Tina!

me personally I have never liked chemicals..I hate how they smell and gosh darn it there are too many chemicals used on everything and anything now a days. Why do I want to keep putting things like that in my body? Everything from meat that is treated with steroids and who knows what else(I now buy most all meat products from an organic farm..bison that is grass fed and chicken that is free range..and my what a difference! the chicken actually tastes cleaner! you would just have to taste it to know exactly what I mean..the meat does not taste "dirty" like what I had tasted from the grocery stores..now grant it every once in a while I /we still flub up in our household and eat what I'll call 'trash food" it is hard to go 100 percent sometimes when our nation has been inundated with the "fast food movement")
I also don't like the thought of loads of chemicals being sprayed on all the fruits and vegetables we eat.I believe the bees and the bats situation are proof of what too many chemicals can do to our environment..as well as many other animals and plants in danger.
And things being dyed or waxed to "look pretty"..Never have agreed with that.
For as long as I can remember I have had a love for growing things..and like to grow things as naturally as possible...controlling weeds the good old fashioned method..by simply pulling them up or tilling them under then raking them out.
I have always had an interest in what is known as the "pass along plants"..those old fashioned varieties that are passed down from one old timer to a new gardener/friend and so on.In fact I now have an heirloom rose(Tuscany Superb) that was acquired this way..as a 'pass along"...as well as probably a few other plants I have forgotten about.
It is my thinking that preserving heirlooms is simply something I need/want to do.
How to exactly put that into words that are eloquent or exactly explain my thinking behind "why"..I'm not so good at that..but it is the right thing for me to do..and I feel a strong desire to do so.
I was interested in this even before I became a member of this website or even heard about Mary Jane's Farm.
Anyhow..sorry to be long winded.
I will try to help the best I can by finding information to share with others, and as I find seed/save seed along the way I will share what I learn, and will share the excess bounty of seed when I have it on hand.
Now..because I am in the process of getting this home ready to sell..I do not currently have a garden(the plants I am keeping are all in pots are are mostly flowers/roses (and some of those yes are of the hybrid variety/but some are hearty old fashioned types as well), but will absolutely have a garden as soon as I get reestablished in Central Florida..how long it will take to sell this home is anyone's guess..I hope it will be soon because..well..I'm itching to get growing again. In the meantime I will continue research on this cause and will start finding seed to grow/save.
thanks for allowing me to be a part of it.

ROFL!! Oh Tina!! Exactly!! You are so right!

I think that we as a world have been "Contaminated" with the idea that bigger is better in everything. Our finances, our lives, our food! And at least one result is bigger debt and bigger waistlines!

Wouldn't it be interesting to see how healthy we all were if we all had to supply our own food and maybe a bit more for barter for those who can't grow their own food?

You know what I would like? This is a bit off subject, but I would like fruit and vegetables that I don't have to peel a tag off of it. I mean what does it say about our society when the checker can't tell the difference between a turnip or a rutabaga, or that the piece of fruit that is being bought is an apple or plum. We as a society, are so far removed from our earth and that my dear friends is why were are in the predicament we are in. I firmly believe the human soul needs, needs to play in the dirt and make things grow. Without chemicals.

I love the earth, and playing in the dirt is one of my favorite things in the world. I don't need a sticker to tell an apple from an ear of corn, like apparently, some people do. LOL! I hope that we can all have the best of times and become dear friends through the Mavens and grow some stupendous gardens while we are at it. I'm working on getting all of the links at least in categories and alphabetized with descriptions for those of slow connections. I want to have MJ's Heirloom Maven badges or something to be able to wear to BB&B.

Oh, we will my dearies, trust me. In fact, I'm going to go take a bath and wash off all this Palouse topsoil and then I'm going to work on our badge. I don't have to cook tonight, DH will be home late so I'll grab an avocado, organic of course, for supper and draw away.
I think we are all going to be fast friends, we are so united in cause, truely a sisterhood.

Count your lucky stars. Explorer just shut down on me and I lost my whole post so this will be short.

Theresa Sue, I just about bust a gut every time I read one of your posts. You can do the stand-up comedy routine at the first Maven get-together.

Annika, totally understand about drifting and ready to do something significant with your life. I've been thinking about how much time I've "wasted" not acting on what was really important to me. But then again, a lot of the good things that happened during that time wouldn't be in my life and I think things come to us when we're ready. (Sometimes they've shown up when I should be ready but I'm just slow sometimes. I was telling Robbie last night how scared I was about getting married because most of the stuff in my life I've had to do twice - once to learn how, the second time to do it right - and with marriage, that wasn't an option for me. Sure glad I picked the right one!)

Mavens, I'm signing off. So much I'd love to post about to each of you but there's only so much time in a day and so little energy in this body right now.

Love you all - sleep well - dream great dreams

God bless -

Oh crumbs.........yea, it's me again. I realized I forgot to comment on the "where we're coming from" topic. I definitely agree that we should do it. It's been such a help to me to read the ones that have posted along that line already. Until Sunny gets the henhouse up and clucking, we can post here but I was thinking that we should also include it in the Member Bios section of the henhouse. It would be a convenient place for them and anyone new Mavens could learn about us there instead of having to read through a long thread..............not that we'd do that or anything...............

Okay, Mavens I'm going to throw this out to you and I need yeas or nays. I've been working on the badge. One of the ideas in my head was a woman either harvesting or sowing. Oh, btw, I am not an artist by any means, okay, now I'm scaring you'all, lol. Anyway, I found this cute image in one of my old quilting books and I think I can rework it to work for us if you'all like it. Picture this: A woman in peasanty type dress(with an apron of course!)and she's holding the apron up like it has seed in it with one hand and she's sowing the seed with the other hand. In the background are gentle, green hills with a huge harvest moon(or sun)behind her. Along the arc of the moon(sun)are the words, MJ's Heirloom Mavens. Oh, and down on the bottom of her dress is a little badge that has GMO in a circle with a slash. Now we could also add some plants in the foreground. My drawings of hands are not so great, but it would be simplified so we could embroider it. We could all do it in the same colors, or we could all pick whatever colors we wanted.
Another idea was a militant woman with a sharp(a very sharp) hoe over her shoulder with the GMO in a circle with a slash in the background. Okay, I'm off to bed. I'll await your verdicts.

what about simply a hand holding a newly sprouted seed...
something like this perhaps?
http://www.midwestcampusministries.com/landscape/images/Hand-holding-Sprout1.gif

but of course a line drawing /simplified version?
of course the gal in the apron sounds cute but for a machine embroidered patch..how difficult would that be??

wow - I hate that I have to work all day and catch up with you all at night, feel like I forgot to show up at the Yalta summit or something. Teresa Sue - I think I like the "gentler" logo better - especially since some of us have issues with people close to us. This is a very fraught issue for many people. We are lucky with the community we have in MJF and the example she sets but there is a lot of ingrained feeling about conventional agriculture. I don't think that organic and heirloom necessarily have to mean the same thing for our purposes, although I believe strongly in both. To me preserving heirloom seeds is akin to rediscovering family history - it would be a real shame if the knowledge of all the fruits of the earth was lost, like losing the story of your family.
I think a lot of us - if not all - feel strongly about both heirloom and organic. There is, however, still alot of work to do. I think the number one thing we can do is educate ourselves, hence the reading list, and then try to lovingly explain our positions. I love that in Barbara Kingsolver's book she talks about her concerns for tobacco farmers - none of us want to see people get lung cancer but the people who grow tobacco are real people who need to earn a livelihood too. I think the heart of all of our concern for preserving heirloom plants, is a concern for a better earth and all the people in it. I am sort of sleepy and not sure if I am expressing myself well - I will try to do better when I write my bio:) At any rate Dawn, in the long run I think things will have to change and shift away from current conventional agricultural methods but that doesn't mean that farmers have to lose their way of life or livelihood. There are lots of concerned people working on this....
Better close, just got home and have to get up at 4 am. Don't solve all the world's problems while I am at work tomorrow - I'm starting to feel left out:D Just kidding - it is exciting to see this project growing.
Amy Grac

Francis Moore Lappe has some good books about food and feeding the world too....
