Corrine,
I received your beautiful card! Thank you. Sorry I haven't been on much to post. I have been rather busy around here. I bought my own copy of AVM last night at Barnes and Noble. I let the one I had from the library get a day overdue so I renewed itbut thought as long as it's taking me to read I had better buy one.

Good morning Mavens,
Hi Denise so good to hear from you. I'm glad I bought AVM because I know I will use it as a reference book. It truly is an inspiring book.
Brenda, where are you?
Annika, maybe the Mavens motto should be what you said, "I know enough to know I don't know enough" LOL Glad to hear your father is doing better. That is so cool about your Grandmother's aprons! It reminded me of the princess and the pea fairytale, only with aprons and a farmgirl, lol. Yea, Yea, I know, work with me, I haven't drank my tea yet this morning, hehehe.

Mornin Mavens...busy day lined up for me as well. I guess I didnt share my thought process ont he potatoes well. I figured if we divvied them up by "variety" then we could all go in together. I had already thought about the cross pollination thing. Its all good though.....
Have a good day. Stay warm for those of you that need to be warm. I am going to "try" to do my Chirstmas Cards today....Corrrine, thank you for the card....your kind words brought tears to my eyes.....
Annika: I am usually the Christmas Grinch here.....but to follow along what Karen and I were talking about in an email..... I am not as melancholy this year as I've been in the past. Karen said she owes it (her happiness) to the Mavens, and I follow that suit. I am actually looking forward to the holidays at this point. And maybe its because I dont have the means to go overboard this year....most of my gifties are under $10, after all presents are just a bonus on that day! Okay frineds, have a good day. Will check in some other time.....

Not only is the motto, "I know enough to know I dont know enough", good got the mavens, but the story of my life. It seems the more I know about any subject the more I know I need to know....

Good morning to you Mavens, I am glad the cards are coming in.
Busy day here too since I am leaving night after tomorrow. Thanks for all your good wishes and kind words. I will be in touch from France since we have a computer at my mom's and we will be only 6 hours apart on the east side and 9 on the west side. Not so bad actually.
Happy day to these of you working outside, happier day to these of you working in their homes.
So glad to know that the Maven are keeping ya'll warm and fuzzy inside because of the love we send to eachother. The holidays will be more peaceful for everybody.

Good afternoon, mavens! If this post sounds tired and disjointed it’s because I’m tired and disjointed. I’ve done two shopping runs in the last 24 hours – some to catch up after the trip and some Christmas shopping. All of it wore me out……twice!

Dawn, it’s good to see you popping in. I know I want to have potatoes next year but haven’t had a chance to think any further than that. Probably won’t be able to until Thanksgiving is over. Some of my shopping was to buy material for two aprons – one each for my mother- and sister-in-law. Did I write about this already? Anyways, I would like to get them in the mail before Thanksgiving Day and I’m hoping to make one for me first so I get the hang of it and don’t screw theirs up! So that’s what I’ll be doing for the next week. I haven’t used my sewing machine for quite awhile so hopefully it still works!

Annika, so glad your father is regaining his spunk. That’s a good sign. Now you take some time and rest. I would think dealing with your father’s surgery while you were sick has you run down so be good to yourself.

To those of you who feel more comfortable keeping your phone number private, no problem with that here. Just know that if you ever want to talk, you have my number and you can call anytime. It always makes my day when I get a jingle from Dawn. I especially like calling her and listening to the clucking chickens while I’m waiting for her to pick up. I fully expect her to have chickens clucking a Christmas song during the season (like the barking dogs of years ago – remember them?).

Marcy, I am so glad you made that trip Sunday safe and sound. A snow storm is nothing to mess with, even for an experienced driver. And did you find yourself in the MJ mag too?

Corinne, your card arrived in the mail yesterday. Your note was so sweet. I have to tell you that when hubbie brought in the mail, he said, “Well, there was some interesting things in the mail. One of them was a letter to you from……..Kuwait?” I said, “Yay! It’s my card from Corinne!” He thought it was really cool that I have a friend in Kuwait. It is!!! And I think the postal service rushed your cards because they know it’s maven mail and not to be messed with! I’ll be working on mine the day after Christmas while I watch Christmas specials on TV and/or listen to Christmas music.

Lillian, in the house I grew up in (we lived with my dad’s parents) there was a gas stove and a woodstove in the kitchen. I only remember my mom using the gas stove for cooking but I do remember my dad always stoking the woodstove in the wintertime to keep the front of the house warm. It was so cozy!

Annika (part 2), what a treasure to get your grandmother’s aprons! And you must be feeling better if you’re joking about wearing them all at once! I read that and thought, “Annika is back!”

Denise, you will not regret buying the AVM. Last night I looked at mine and thought how worn it looks already. I thought “I need to take better care of my books” but then I realized it was worn because DH and I are constantly referring to it. Although he’s taking a break from it right now and burying himself in the organic gardening book I checked out at the library.

To all, by far the best gift I have received this year is your friendship. Finding all of the farmgirls was amazing but still doesn’t compare to what I’ve found with the mavens. I am truly blessed to have you all in my life.

God bless -

This isn't an HVM vortex story, it's a farmgirl vortex story. After I submitted my last post I thought I'd wander around the connection awhile as I haven't the chance to do that lately. I'd been on a long time apparently because I heard one of the cats getting into something out in the front of the house. It didn't sound like anything broke so I thought I'd check it out when I was done. Then I heard the sound again. Then Gussie started barking. Then he came in the office to tell me about it. I couldn't get him to settle down so I thought I'd better go check on whatever it was that had him worked up. When I got up I realized that all of the cats were in the room with me. So what was making that noise? Gussie showed me. It was the pot on the stove. I'd put some eggs on to boil and was going to check on them after I read the DOE. Then the vortex hit and the rest is history. Guess I'll have to break into that box of cookware that I was saving as a reward for getting the kitchen organized!

God bless -

Karen hopefully you didn't explode any eggs! I've burned up two teakettles while I was spinning wool, it's like the MV, you just get so engrossed in it! lol.

Mavens when you get your list from Corinne, (Corinne don't worry about this, my email doesn't show my complete name)you need to ammend my last name. I have a hypenated name, it is Hoke-House.
oh, you know how I keep my much loved paperback books from getting the covers all ripped, I take that clear wide packing tape and stick it to the edges of the cover, front and back. I'm telling you this because my AVM is a paperback and I did that with it and it does help keep them from tearing.

Hey everyone!!
Teresa Sue - that is funny, NCIS is the only TV show I watch, except this year with baseball lasting as long as it did my husband wouldn't let me turn off the world series so I missed all the episodes except last week's, then yesterday was at a soap-making class so missed that one. Your husband doesn't fish does he? I was just laughing because you said he is a carpenter named John and sometimes lacks follow-through; my husband is a carpenter named John who sometimes(most times) lacks follow-through. Weird hunh?

Annika - what a cool surprise, getting your grandma's aprons. Last year right before Christmas my grandma moved into assisted living and I got a dresser from her that I didn't know my name was on. Well my parents were in Europe when the move started and my dad's two older brothers "helped" grandma move by throwing almost all her stuff out - vintage cookware, you name it, grandma never threw anything away. When my folks got back the only thing left in her apartment was this dresser - my dad was mad. Anyway, they got the dresser to my house and we opened it up and my uncles hadn't got to it. I got all grandma's "good" linens, her sewing stuff - including bias tape from the 30's, and all the family snapshots. It was a huge gift and allowed me to know my grandma a lot better. She has been really careworn all my life due to health and family issues and I have never thought of her as a happy person but in all the photos she was so happy. Wow - that story was longer than I thought it would be.
Dawn and Lora - glad you had a good time, I am jealous.
Those of you who homeschool have my admiration. I always wanted to homeschool Randy but he and I are too much alike, plus when I start talking he just hears the Charlie Brown grown-up voices.
I agree we have a lot to learn - I figure even if I do my part for Heirlooms by buying from heirloom companies I am making a step in the right direction.
Talk to y'all soon (y'all were probably wondering if I was ever gonna stop talking)
Amy Grace

That is so cool about you getting the dresser, the part about losing the other stuff, not so cool, I have an old friend that calls relatives, "relatics", sometimes it really does describe those people in your life that are your kin, lol.

too funny Teresa Sue - relatics as in lunatics? That would cover my uncles - my dad's oldest brother is seriously getting nutty - a cousin had sent him all this genealogy that she had done including originals of birth certificates and he was going to throw it away!!
And judging from our husbands we may be living parallel lives!!

Yes to the working!!
As you know from your time in the grocery business Thanksgiving is huge and to top it off I have a "one-day sale" a week after Thanksgiving where all my cheese will be 30% off. It is a pretty cool event - there are 15 vendors coming to sample cheese from all over the world but....it means a lot of prep work, and I am short staffed because with sales being slightly down we have had to cut hours so I am pulling some major time. I am salaried but I do get "comp days" when I work more than 40 hours, I just don't have time to take them

ahhhh, the grocery business. I have to say I don't miss it. Most people don't know how brutal that business is. I used to work some long hours, sometimes 80hrs a week, I don't envy you girl. I might have to come to your cheese sale, tho. lol it is for the public?

Yes the sale is definitely for the public - Dec. 6th!! Be sure to say hi if you come in - I will be the one running - that is my holiday gait, full on run. Actually this year will go much better - last year was my first time doing this event and I was way over-prepared. I can take it a little easier this year, probably just work 64 hours that week, last year was 73. My husband was working out of town that week and I got home every night to tired to think so my son offered to make himself dinner all week - he ate bacon every night, nothing else, just bacon. There is another one of my "mom of the year" moments.....ahhh, memories

Hey, my grandson loves bacon. In fact my daughter and son-in-law, used to have this joke about the kids visiting their grandparents, when they went to son-in-laws parents house, they came home smelling like cigerettes, but when they came from our house they went home smelling like woodsmoke and bacon, lol! Charming, eh,lol

I get a vacation in March - going to France with my folks to celebrate their 40th anniversary (April) and my 40th birthday (november). That will be worth the wait and the holiday craziness. Okay, I gotta go drive into Spokane to pick up the soap I made at the class last night, talk to you later. I'm glad we got to chat!!

Man, I wanna be in Washington with you guys. TS & Amy Grace, I loved reading your chat.

Amy Grace, I inherited my grandmother's dresser also. I was 9 (almost 10!) when she passed away and I got a few little things. When my aunt moved out of her house she gave me grandma's dresser. I didn't recognize it because it was black when Grandma had it but my uncles stripped and refinished it so now it's oak. I remember playing with the dresser drawers but most I all I remember when I was really little I would take naps in the bottom drawer. Grandma would pull it out and I'd crawl in and sleep. As far as relatives pitching stuff, Robbie's aunt told us that his mom pitched the family pictures. Grandma had given them to her since she's the oldest, but she didn't know any of the people so she pitched 'em. Yea.

TS, yes, about half of the eggs exploded. That was the sound I heard that I thought was Chessie. It was the exploding egg making the lid on the pot rattle. One eggs had the guts blown out of it. Nothing spewed in the kitchen though, thankfully. Robbie got home and said, "It smells like smoke in here." K: "Uh, yea......eggs." R: "Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! That's right! Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, you struggle with that." Well, can't argue with him there. Too much evidence to the contrary today. But I do learn from my mistakes sometimes. Right now I have supper in the oven BUT I set the alarm to remind me to take it out. No HMV effect tonight! No, siree, bob!

God bless -

aaaaggghghghghghgh!!!!!!I know my DH was trying to help, but he shrunk one of my favorite linen blouses aaaajajajjajahfhfkdsfjfsdkjhfj;klfja;skdlf! Or should I say, he shrunk a_n_o_t_h_e_r blouse. I have told him so many times, my blouses do not go in the dryer! I have been thinking about not using the dryer, I have a wooden dryer rack upstairs. I guess I am going to have to bring it down. Okay, thanks Mavens for letting me vent, dryer vent, that is, lol

Good evening to you Mavens, it is morning time here.
Annika and Amy Grace, how cool you have inherited these aprons. I only have a couple from my grand-mother and my mom doesn't wear aprons.

Amy Grace good luck with the sales for Thanksgiving, hope you won't be too tired. Are you 40 yet or is it coming in 2009 ?

Teresa Sue, corrected your hyphened name, sorry for that.

Karen, I had a bout when I kept forgetting what was on or inside the stove, eggs, bread, cake... the smell of burned egg is just awful. Am glad your husband is bringing in the mail, mine does too and he is always so interested in what the girls have to say. He sometimes asks me what has been happening in the coop.

Last night I got my sewing machine back from maintenance and have finished a quilt for Raymond's grandnephew who is 7. It is in primaries colors with a bright green display of frogs. Still have a bit of work to do on it before I mail it but that is the last of my hand made gift for this year so I feel good that I could finish it before going.

Hope all the coop boarders are fine and ready for a good night before another good day,
Corinne

No problem Corinne, there was no way for you to know and it was fixed easily, lol. Thank you for doing the list, I am so happy to have mine! It is good to finish a quilt project, a very good feeling.
Yes, Karen linen blouses in the dryer is too much follow through, agh.
