I had a great recipe for dog food that was made in a crock pot. It had ground turkey, lentils, rice and a can of veggies. . . I lost the recipe but am thinking of just winging it. . .
I've heard that garlic isn't good for dogs and I've also heard that garlic is a natural flea repellent. Does anyone know? My little dog will jump for joy at the answer.

I thought garlic was OK for dogs but onions are a definite no-no. Something about the onion causes an anemia. I have a friend who cooks for her dog, her recipe is similar to yours but she uses whole chicken and then cuts it up (and bones it) when it's through cooking.

I thought garlic is okay, but onions are bad. I make similar recipes for my dogs. They had sweet potatoes, carrots, swiss chard, and chicken earliers this week. I have used cut up chicken and cooked it down till the bones turn to mush...so they have calcium.

How long did you have to cook the chicken for the bones to get mushy? Did you do it on top the stove or in a crock pot.
I knew to avoid onions but I'd like to try garlic but before I do maybe I can track down an "internet vet" and ask.

I didn't realize onions were bad for dogs. What does it do to them?

Ok here's the poop.
Onions are more toxic than garlic. Onions contain or release a compound called thiosulphate that clings to red blood cells and causes them to burst which in turn is what causes anemia. Basically The RBC can't carry the oxygen needed for bodily functions. The effects can be from large exposures or multiple exposures...both from raw, cooked and dehydrated onions.
Other baddies are macadamia nuts which cause tremors, and muscle weakness and paralysis
Grapes and raisins
of course chocolate and its compund theobromine. The darker the chocolate, the worse the toxicity. hurts liver and kidney
And a really bad one is XYLITOL! This is more commonly found in sweetners. It's great for human oral health and is why it's in so many chewing gums these days. I have seen it sold in bulk at our natural food store too. Like granulated sugar This stuff causes liver and kidney failure
This ought to go under the farm yard buddy heading....but please
Read labels and protect our pets
AND should any of our dogs get into these foods good 'ole straight hydrogen peroxide is a great purgative. Never have had to use it, but have heard of other dog owners who have.

I never heard about the macadamia nuts, grapes or raisins, either. I can't afford macadamias and I don't think my babies would eat grapes or raisins even if I gave them to them. I'll have to be more careful and watchful about the onions from now on.
