When dealing with houseflies, I find that Windex works wonders. Simply spray the offending winged creature with Windex until he falls to the nearest flat surface, and quickly wipe him up with toilet paper(being sure to apply a little pressure to finish him off) and toss the paper into the trash. This makes your room smell lovely, gives the windows and sills a likely needed washing and doesn't throw ones arm out as does the violent slashing of the disgusting fly swatter. In our house we use Clorox green works all natural window cleaner with great success. Try this tip the next time your house is woefully overrun with houseflies. P~

Okay, that's one I hadn't tried! When the flies are really bad around here we put a basin of cheap soda on the sidewalk and they dive in like B52 bombers! Susan |

We do the soda thing too, except we add a little dishsoap to it so that the soap coats their wings and they cant fly anywhere. Works for bees too, although with the bee population decreasing it might be a good thing to keep somewhere inside just for the flies!

We are for sure having fly season right now...this time of year they get really bad for a few weeks..their last Hoorah I guess before freezing...and I am fighting them constantly. I hate the fly swatter. I hadn't though of windex for the flies...I do use it on ants when we have had them (not much here, but in Calif..wow!) but here I hadn't..thanks for the tip!

I use windex to kill wasps and spiders (especially those really fast ones that jump). Never thought to try it on the flies. They don't seem to stay at the windows very long. They're buzzing around here like crazy lately.

Wow! I never heard of using soda or Windex. The flys get so bad at my house that I simply can not stand it. Once we kill them, my little dog will dispose of their carcasses!! Thanks for the ideas! |

Thanks for the windex and soda tips! I've never heard of either one and since I have four horse, flies are just part of the package. I'm going to try this ASAP!

The Windex doesn't kill the fly, it just seems to stun it and make it drop, then you are ready with a toilet paper wad and squoosh him good and dead... P~

If you don't mind spending a little money, there's cluster buster traps. You stick them to the inside of your window and when the flies fall inside a powdered substance (eggshells) sticks to their feet and they can't fly. www.lehmans.com |

What was that movie where the dad used windex on everything? The In-laws or Meet the Parents, something like that?! :) |

I am so glad that I read this! I've never heard of Windex or Soda and I feel like I'm being invaded right now! Here's one for fruit flies that works though...apple cider vinegar and acouple drops of dish soap in a small clear glass (I'm not sure why the glass has to be small and clear but it works like a charm!)

A really inexpensive way to keep flies out of your house is to fill a ziplock baggie with water and hang it over your doorway (outside). My mom did this and it works! The baggie just has to be hung with taks.
