OH happy day! Kathy and Eddie and Mark came today ... we had yummy pizza from Papa Murphy .. Murray .. well! someone's PAPA! (the BEST we've found in Kentucy .. well .. except for brad and cindy simmons' pizza! that is trooooooooly "THE BEST'!! But for store bought' .. papa does a reeeeeeeeely fine job! they prepare it .. you bring it home to cook it!

then we all went down to the 'trees' to measure out the dimensions and place for our tree house. we went this-a-way and that-a-way ... we went larger and smaller and in-between.

finally .. i jus' said: "Kathy .. what would YOU do? She told me and i said "roll em'!!"

we've decided to go for a 16 by 16 square tree house (remember .. UNDER the trees .. not IN them! I didn't want to lose any tree limbs which would have occurred if we went bigger..

and this way .. we'll have more room for a bigger 'fire pit' and some 'comfy' chairs surrounding the fire pit. I'll be taking lots of photos as we progress .. to share with you.

the sixteen by sixteen will still allow me to put the furniture i want on it too!

the larger size was starting to look like an 'airplane landing strip'!!!

this is eddie and mark digging the 'post holes' .. they will be back tomorrow to finish up and perhaps 'sink' them.

"Mark"
WHAT A CUTIE PIE ... A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL .. AND GURLZ .. IF YOU HAVE DAUGHTERS' .. HE'S AVAILABLE!

at first, i thought we would go very 'rustic' with tree posts and such .. but for 'longevity' and strength .. we've decided to go with good pressure treated wood . that we will stain 'forest green' ... will use our 'signature' BARN RED tin roof over it!

travel along with us on this fun journey from start to finish .. then come visit and we'll camp out on it!

i spied this butterfly on a large thistle bush on the path to the tree house:

THE BEES LOVE IT TOO!

XOXO, FRANNIE

ohhhhh .. kathy will 'work her magic' to make it look rustic by surrounding those green-tinted posts with vines and branches from the forest!! she said that will be her gift to me. xo

oh honey .. it will be OPEN .. we wanna' be in the 'outdoors' on there ... will have 'railings' around it so that the grandes don't fall off the edge .. will probably be about 4 or 5 feet off the ground on the 'down-slope' ... AND .. we will have a 'gate' so when we do sleep on it .. our 'dawgs' can be with us and not go racing off into the forest in the middle of the night in pursuit of 'critters' they hear in the woods!

our idea is to have a 16 x 16 foot wooden 'platform' .. probably two or three 'railings all the way around it (for safety .. HA! and 'dawg' contol .. as mentioned above)

at first i didn't want a 'roof' .. but we decided we could sleep there even in the RAIN if we have a tin roof.

we will most likely have them build a sturdy 'pole' running at the roof line .. all the way around .. from pole to pole so that we can put up a sturdy (tent-like) canvas cover in case of BIG storms .. or a little added warmth if we decide to do a little 'winter camping'.

My plans are to have a wonderful primitive 'cupboard' of some sort out there for 'camping' storage things .. a table and chairs for meals .. and a hammock or two. (we can put up COTS when we have friends over to camp-out for the night). I think i've decided to put our 'comfy chairs' at the far end around our 'fire-pit'. making it 8 feet shorter than i was going to .. gives lots more room for a larger firepit and 'sittin' area. ohhh .. i jus' get chill bumps thinking about it!

kathy and krew have built us 4 porches .. and it is almost hard to remember what those plain spaces looked like BEFORE.

keep watchin' .. cuz' they are gonna' build some more TOMORROW! xo

kathy and krew (her honey-man, eddie and son michael) arrived bright and early with a truck fulla' wood!

posts and concrete!
i told them to take down some of the log fence and back the truck as far as they could .. they still have quite a ways to carry it down to the edge of the woods!

eddie and mike workin' hard in this hot kentucky sunshine!

eddie doin' the 'happy dance' .. i swear .. he is so sweet and funnnneeeeeee .. i told him yesterday that he 'missed his calling' .. he should have been a stand-up commedienne .. his one-liners are PERFECTLY timed!

they had to manually dig post holes through heavy ROCK earth! this is ONE of 8!

will take some pics at the end of the day ... xoxo

i get 'exciteder and exciteder'

so sort of like a porch, with a roof and railing but away from the house. A yard porch...???
That sounds neato!

that sounds like a pretty good description ... a porch is more 'out doors' .. enclosed with walls and windows sounds more like a 'sunroom' (we have one of those porches too .. but rarely ever sit on it .. toooo 'enclosed' ... i use it mostly to collect my gardeny things and my BOOKS!

i think a yard porch is pretty much the same as what some of the girls call an 'outpost' ... to me it's more of a 'tree house' cuz' it's surrounded by trees .. if you didn't know you were on the ground .. you'd think you were actually IN the trees.

ohhh .. and if you surround it with 'canvas' .. it kinda' becomes a big TENT .. i love the idea of a nice strong TIN roof .. i think one of my fav sounds is rain on a tin roof. (we have tin roofs on our cabins .. and when we get a big storm and it is pitch black outside .. that sound just lulls me to sleep like a lullabye.

i had to leave before they were finished .. but hank said that FRIDAY they will be back to do the FLOOR! then the railings (so the kiddies don't fall off) .. then the 'trusses' and 'tin roof' .. and a 'gate' to keep the dawgs from runnin' into the woods at night when we are all out there ... chasin' critters!

can hardly wait t'il morning so i can go take a peek! xo

Looks and sounds great KY Frannie. You got yourself some good helpers too.

Say on that drop off, whats that like? You live on a mountain? Are they any springs close by? Will you have an outhouse? Bathhouse? Is it a trip to the tree house to your main house? Any swings? Whats the view like. Oh I wish I could come and see, but your pictures are nice to see what your doing : )

Oh how I love the sound of rain on a tin roof when sleeping.

This is fun watching a tree house being built. More pic's

linda .. i think the highest point off the ground (at the back) is about 4 feet .. the front of the tree house is just ONE STEP up. noooo .. we actually live in a little 'valley' all to ourselves. our cabins are at the dead end of a small (what people around here call 'goat trail') .. actually it is a small, paved (until you get to the top of our hill) one lane road that is about 1/2 mile from the main road. there are only 5 homes back here .. you only see three of them on the road .. and none from our house. we are in the 'rolling hills' part of kentucky ..

we have a 'creek' that runs through the woods just into the trees of the forest. i've been told that the surrounding forest is between 1 and 2 thousand acres. (only deer and critters live IN the forest .. but all the homes are on the 'edge' of it.

No . .no outhouses for me!!!!!!!! not needed .. our home is only abut a hundred steps from our treehouse .. and then .. there is the WOODS! (i'd piddle in the middle of traffic before i'd go into an OUTHOUSE!!!)

We have a wonderful outdoor shower deck between the cabins and treehouse with HOT and COLD running water! the shower itself is to the right outside the photo .. we have a nice sitting bench for 'after your shower' so you can sit 'nekked' in the sunshine if you are so 'moved'.

couldn't find a picture of the whole shower deck . will keep lookin'

no swings .. just hammocks and comfy chairs and benches placed here and there under trees for relaxing in.

HAMMOCK

this is ONE of the tables and chairs sets scattered throughout .. this one is near the hammock

our view is TOTAL forest.

this is our BACK porch (which is similar to the TREE HOUSE that we are building ... (only SQUARE) .. this is attached to the addition between the two cabins .. you get to it from the kitchen .. or back yard area. it has LOTS more furniture on it now though! if some of the gurlz at the gathering want to be closer to the house .. they can skootch the table over and set up their cots here. it's under a tin roof too.

will take some more photos in the morning.. i got home after dark and couldn't even see how it all finished up today.

Just beautiful KY Frannie, beautiful. You mention cabins, no you rent out to vacationers? I bet you have a blast going shopping for things to put in your cabins.

I love valleys as much as mountains. The fog that settles in them. And how the fog is over the creeks. My very favorite.

Ah Frannine, what can i say about an outhouse. You set there with wide open before ya, watching critters playing, birds singing, read or don't read a magazine. As long as you get the spiders and other critters that like the outhouse, they are pretty nice.

Oh hot and cold outside shower, now thats nice. Never sat 'nekked' in the sun before. Might save on towels

Thats my goal here on our homestead , to make all the surroundings a place to just sit and relax. Benches on the trails, in the gardens, down by the chicken Hen Den. A spot to take in the beauty.

You might have them all wanting that porch w/ tin roof. That looks like a peaceful and inviting back porch.

Can't wait for more pic's

Have fun

LINDA ELLEN: Just beautiful KY Frannie, beautiful. You mention cabins, no you rent out to vacationers? I bet you have a blast going shopping for things to put in your cabins.

The Cabins are our home:

what we call the Upper Cabin .. circa 1864.

we call this one the Lower Creek . circa 1876.
this one is just like the other one .. only this is the BACK of it .. the front of the cabin faces the woods.

I love valleys as much as mountains. The fog that settles in them. And how the fog is over the creeks. My very favorite.

when i first saw a photo of our home .. there was a magnificent fog covering our little valley .. if you get up early on some mornings .. it is delightful to sit on the front porch midst it.
i'll post that pic to ya' soon!

Ah Frannine, what can i say about an outhouse. You set there with wide open before ya, watching critters playing, birds singing, read or don't read a magazine. As long as you get the spiders and other critters that like the outhouse, they are pretty nice.

HOMEY ain't goin' (literally!) there. i envision spiders and snakes hiding under that 'settin' place. i won't even use a 'porta-potty' .. carry some depends .. jus' in case .. cuz' i'd rather poop my britches! jus' can't make me be THAT country! (when i was a very young child .. for a year in Georgia .. we lived so poor .. we didn't even have an outhouse .. YEP! right on the ground! i was only about 6 or 7 .. only have ONE vivid memory of that!

Oh hot and cold outside shower, now thats nice. Never sat 'nekked' in the sun before. Might save on towels

you'd be surprized (i know i was) at how many of my frenz jus' let it "all hang out" after an outdoor shower ... (as long as my honey-man isn't home!)

Thats my goal here on our homestead , to make all the surroundings a place to just sit and relax. Benches on the trails, in the gardens, down by the chicken Hen Den. A spot to take in the beauty.

i'll post lotsa' SIT-UPONS in another thread under Across the Fence .. that shows the sittin' places we have SO FAR!

You might have them all wanting that porch w/ tin roof. That looks like a peaceful and inviting back porch.
the 'tree house' will be the same .. only tucked slightly into the woods.

Can't wait for more pic's --- Have fun

comin' soon sweetie! i just ambled down there with my cuppa' mornin' coffee and took some more pics of 'where we are' now! xo

wandered sleepy-eyed down to the Tree House this mornin' ... cuppa' coffee in one hand .. camera in t'other .. here are a few photos of where the kids ended before night fell yesterday:

you probably have to know the 'lay-out' of the cabins and outbuildings to really understand this .. but this might give a 'little' perspective:

above is what i call BUTTERFLY ALLEY .. cuz' of all the beautiful butterflies feeding on the purple thistle bushes along with walk.

i'm standing under the 'cherry' tree looking into the forest here.

===========

standing under the same cherry tree .. i jus' turned around and took a photo of the CABINS .. sooo ... you can see they are not so far away .. that you can't go from one to the other without too many steps. we started to put it deeper into the woods .. but i jus' KNEW i wouldn't go down there as much if we did.

======

a little 'sling-swing' nearby

++++++++++

the little 'red shed' about half way between the cabins and the tree house

===========

i'm standing slightly uphill rom the red-shed .. looking over the fence (we usta' keep cabin and creek in here before we had their BIG yard fenced in) .. looking towards the tree house in the background

=====

i turned around in the same spot above and snapped a photo of the back of the cabins

========

took about ten steps closer to the tree house here

===========

turned around in the same spot for another 'back of cabin' view

=========

Tree House is finally coming into almost-full-view!

===============

VOILA! THE 'BONZ' OF IT! ohhhhhhhhh ... i can barely wait!

THIS FRIDAY .. the floor will be down!

============

in the next three photos .. standing in the 'tree house' i aimed the camera up into the canopy of trees and sky

it will also be so beautiful when the autumn leaves fall and show even more sky .. and the lacy limbs of snow in wintertime .. and ohhh .. the budding of springtime leaves!

these photos show 'how high' off the ground it will be at it's four corners:

ONE STEP UP. we will have 'railings' all the way around (kiddies and puppies!) THIS is where the 'gate' will be .. and the ONLY entrance/exit of the tree house.
LEFT side of the 'front' of the tree house (uphill)
====

the RIGHT side of the 'front' of the tree house (uphill)

====

LEFT back side .. DOWN HILL. the FLOOR will be laid on TOP of the wide board .. looks to be about 3 feet off the ground.
remember .. there will be fence rails all along four sides of the tree house.

=============

this is the RIGHT back side .. downhill .. probably 4 or 5 feet off the ground. will feel like we are really IN the trees!

===============

looking BEHIND the tree house into the forest ... making it a tad smaller is going to give us a MUCH nicer and bigger area for our FIREPIT and sittin' places! beyond this .. it falls off into the woods!

-----------

well ya-ya's .. i'll keep the pictures and journey coming as we travel upon it. hope you will all come 'camp-out' with us soon!

xo
