Well, here we go again! Ike is already up to a strong catagory 4 from being a catagory 1 just last night. It looks like our Florida farmgirls will get the brunt of him. You can never really be 100 % sure about these storms though. I hope everyone is already preparing.

Yes, November is the end of the season. Ike seems to be pretty strong at the moment. Everybody stay on guard. First Gustav, now Hannah, Ike and let's don't forget Josephina. Sheesh!!

November, come quickly!!! Although, the worst hurricane we ever had in these parts came on Thanksgiving week-end in 1985. Half of each year is spent watching the weather channel.

Brenda you took the words right out of my mouth. Here we go again. This mornings computer models make it look extra scary.
Sounds like a broken record doesnt it? So many havent full recovered from the 2005 storms.

My thoughts are with you gals in the Florida, Miss., AL, Louisiana region. Take cover. Hope I don't see much of that stuff in Central GA. Although, we did have a tornado come right over town a few weeks ago. First time I had ever been subjected to one of those. Almost made me have to change my pants!!! I was soooo scared.
Thank God I live in the country! |

Lorij,
We did just fine. Some folks in the area lost trees and were without power for 3-4 days, but that was the extent of it. Oh, and NO groceries. We are just a small town (3500) and when we have thousands passing thru and needing groceries to either hunker down with or move on in case they have to stop unexpectedly and weather the storm, it makes for very bare shelves.
I love my little country cottage, but it sure makes me consider moving north. I am getting too old for all the preparations by myself. With my husband in Tunisia 6 months out of the year, it seems he is gone when the weather gets crazy. But then again, I am feeling a bit whiny and missing him a lot. I just dumped my extra rain water yesterday so, I suppose in the next day or so, I will get back out my buckets and fill them from the well. Just in case. I have bottled water for drinking but like to have water I can boil to wash up or flush the toilets. When we have no power, we have no running water.

Susan- Will your town get groceries delivered soon? This is probably good for your local grocer, but I can't imagine going into a store to see bare shelves like that.
Everybody stay safe! I will be hoping that Ike downgrades rapidly!

Alee,
Actually during something like this our local grocer where both my girls, Hannah and Rachel work, donates almost as much as he sells. So what happens is he has all his employees on the clock nearly 24/7 and frankly making half as much on the groceries going out the door. My girls have only been working there a few weeks and WOW did they get broke in! Volume of customers was probably times 10.
So whats the housing market like in Montana??????

Lorij, I think you have every reason to be concerned. So am I. I did something today I hardly ever do. I cried over the phone talking to my husband. We live by the George Eliot quote: "What do we live for if not to make life less difficult for each other?" and therefore I do my best, no matter how difficult a time I am having, to sound brave and capable on the phone. After all he is 6000 miles away what can he do but lend moral support? The thought of it all over again makes my tummy hurt. And we didnt even have it bad, I just know many of my friends and some family did and are certainly not recovered enough to take another hit.
We will just watch and wait like so many.

It's amazing the logistics that a storm like this needs to keep people safe. *hugs* Hopefully there will be a chance for refueling and restocking before the storm rolls in.

My son was on the coast when Gustav hit, Here in MS we was lucky, sure there was some damage but nothing like they had thought it would be. Jon Brandon has been put on alert and may have to go back if Ike does take the path they are expecting. It seems like every step we take to recover from Katrina we take several backwards. Hope you all stay safe. Laura www.2lmzfarms.blogspot.com |

These are the reasons why I am so concerned about Marly. If she has no power and no way to communicate then she may not be aware of the path that Ike is taking. I hope that she does not get caught unaware. The church I go to in Bossier City is a volunteer shelter. If ANYONE needs a place to stay, please go there. The phone # is 318-746-2645 and the address is 2125 Airline Drive, Bossier City. We cook 3 hot meals a day, have shower facilities and lots of big hearts and open arms. Lori, girlfriend, you come up this way. Okay?

You know Brenda, I have been thinking the same thing...what about all those still displaced from last week? And how far inland do they need to go? My husband wants me to make reservations somewhere in Arkansas but I am having trouble finding a hotel. Seems people are taking this seriously. As well they should. And planning ahead.

I'm here in Southeast Texas (on the Texas/Louisiana line) and I'm a bit concerned about Ike's path as well!

Well I just made reservations in Mena, AR (anyone close???) and if it looks as if it is headed this way I will honor my husband's long distance wishes and leave. YIKES!

You are very kind Laura. I look at your blog often and your place and family are beautiful. I am so amazed at the giving spirit among the farmgirls. I have never been to your part of Mississippi though I would love to some time...maybe under better circumstances. I do have reservations but maybe someone can take you up on your generosity. May you be blessed for your kindness.

What wonderful farmgirls who offer help on this site. I wonder where our family would go if we had to leave because it is hard to decide which direction to head in. This hurricane season is making a lot of us weary. Just yesterday, big trucks came through the part of our city to take away the huge piles of logs and downed trees that were piled at the curbs from Fay. Every morning when I wake up, if I sleep very much, I wonder what the "cone of uncertainty" is going to hold today. Will we be in it? How many days do we have to decide what to do? It is crazy!!! We are becoming professional weather forecasters. I pray that Ike will weaken and not hurt anyone, no matter where it goes, very badly.
Two nights ago I dreamed I met Dwight Eisenhower, and he was young and strong. When I woke up I knew "Ike" was really weighing heavily on my mind!!! :)
I pray for Susan and Lori, and we can only wonder what the final track will be. Love to you all...
