Thanksfully we live on a road that's just us and 2 1/2 other "neighbors". I say it this way because we are so spread out.

The folks below us are never home. The boys who rent there now (the house is still in the family but my FIL rents it out). work 10 hours at their glass blowing shop. They hope it get it up and running, so these days we hear the cars come home late at night.

The middle house is the one that stood abandoned for so long. Preacher man is refirbishing it just on the weekends, then goes home to SC. So again, not much action. The "good 'ole boys" at the top of the road keep to themselves. We hear engines runing from their trucking repair shop. We'll stop in to visit a few times a month. And since the son of one now works 3rd shift (halleluia!!!) the woods are quieter and less polluted w/ beer bottles.

So most days all we hear are the natural sounds and chickens.

It's nice.

So we have decent neighbors. I really miss our friends who were down the road at the last house. They moved this past spring. The wife was a great organic gardener and most excellent bread maker. The husband rode bikes all the time w/ my hubby. And our dogs were best friends who would stand at the edge of the field and woof to one another to come play.

Not a month after we moved in, one of our heifers gave birth to her first calf. DH & I had already left for work in town, and a neighbor (one we hadn't met yet) spotted hooves and a nose sticking out as she drove by. An hour later, as she came back by, she noticed the exact same thing. She went home, got her son to come over and see what he could do, while she started calling other neighbors. This was 8 in the morning. We finally got a call from someone who knew someone who THOUGHT someone knew one of our clients -- and found out what was going on at the Plantation around 2 in the afternoon. We rushed home, and by the time we had gotten there, we had a new calf, and a new mom who wanted NOTHING to do with the calf. Another neighbor went and got some colostrum (that stuff isn't cheap!), yet another had rubbed down the calf, and the rest hung around to see what needed to be done. Mr. Jasper, another neighbor, helped us to get the calf in the barn, showed me how to bottle feed, and showed DH how to pen up the mom and get her to start feeding. Yep. I'd say we have wonderful neighbors. I wrote a Grapevine Gazette article about it (that's a newsletter for the women at my church), and the tail end was "That love thy neighbor thing? These people take it seriously!"

What a wonderful story. We had a much similar thing happen this spring when one our heifers was having a problem and none of us were home....not that I would have had a clue anyway but....and this woman wasn't even a neighbor. Just someone driving by. That was my expensive little, well not really little, that was the problem, heifer calf that the vet had to pull. That was an experience. But all's well.

On one side, there is a sweet old couple who are great. On the other side, well lets just say perhaps they are too nice, I think they are (swingers) I'll just say they invited us to a party, but THANK GOD we didnt have a sitter for the kids, anyway they had a hot tub party 2 weekends in a row with the same group of people, and uh well we know what they all think of each others bodyparts and such.............cause they werent shy about yelling them out. Until 2AM. yucko, I totally had to stiffle giggles when they asked why we didnt come over.

My neighbors are mostly family. But my closet neighbor is not and they are so rude most of the time they are city slickers and why they moved to the country is beyond me. When they moved here we already had chickens which we let roam well when they moved in if he saw them in his yard he kills them. So I'm not to pleased with my neighbors. So enjoy the good ones!

I lived in the country most of my life, on the same farm I was raised on. Then my uncle decided to put a subdivision on the property my grandpa left him. I thought it would be awful, but it's really been fine.

Just today, my neighbors that I share a wall with invited me over in case this hurricane gets bad. They are so nice. They have food, water, flashlights, etc and are so worried about me and Charlie. They are so nice.

My neighbors are great!! I live in a small town of about 200 and most of the people are great! I first met one of my neighbors when our house caught on fire! About 2 weeks after we moved in, 4 years ago at Christmas, some wiring shorted out and started a fire at the breaker box and I remembered being told that our neighbor Vas was the Fire Chief so after I could not get a signal on my cell phone and we didn't have a land line, I ran next door banging on the door and 2 minutes later he was back with fire truck putting it out! What a way to meet your neighbor!!! His wife Karen sews and does other crafts and we have gotten to be great friends! My other neighbors are Ruth and Billy. She runs the Post Office here in town and they are really nice so I guess I have really lucked out!

Our neighbors are just wavers. I know the names of the people on each side of us but we never talk, just wave back and forth. When we moved in a few people came over to introduce themselves but that's about it. I guess it is better then hating our neighbors...everyone pretty much just leaves everyone else alone. Our daughter does play with the neighbor girl all the time though.

We have been in our home for 22 years, and our neighbors are like family. I do not know what I would do without Nancy next door. We have had so much fun, shared prayer, and the sickness of our kids, and fearful medical results, and decorating ideas......she leaves me magazine on my back porch, and we take her dog to the vet. It is such a blessing to have good neighbors.

Well, having been in our new house for less than a week, I have a whole new group of neighbors to evaluate. So far, everyone is AWESOME. We have received such a warm welcome, it's really hard to believe. Lasagna the first night...pumpkin bread this weekend...offers to lend us tools and such like a lawnmower (which we don't have yet)...an invitation to the neighborhood womens' book club... and it goes on. I never imagined the sense of community would be so strong. We totally love it.

I have land in KY but don't live there yet. We owned one parcel and the guy that lives next door (we share a drive) I have a feeling is up to "no good." Too much in and out traffic if you know what I mean. This spring we bought a parcel that adjoins our other one but doesn't share the driveway with the other guy. Well I was there alone (dh and kids in FL) in March and I met 4 of the men-folk neighbors who stopped by to see who I was and what I was up to. Really nice fellas. Most of them are in their 60's I guess. One in particular is just the nicest guy. There was a lot of "junk" laying around the place, old dryers, etc and he told me he knew a scrap guy that would come and clean it up so he could sell the scrap. I said that'd be great. Well the next day the guy was there and my new friend, Carl, told him what he could and couldn't take and made sure he left the tin for the barn roof alone as well as a metal ladder that he thought we'd be able to use. He referred to me as the "boss lady" and told the guy any diamonds or gold he found belonged to "us." I asked him if "us" was him and me and he lit up real big and said "yeah!" I told him I didn't realize I had taken on a partner and he just giggled. He even ran the scrap guy off a couple of days later because I was gone and the guy tried to take the tin for the barn. I think their friendship ended over it unfortunately. He promised to look out for my place and got upset when the guy tried to take my stuff. I am looking forward to meeting his wife when I'm up in October. We joke because his wife can't believe anybody from Florida can be nice LOL! Later in the spring I came back with my dh. DH needed a tool to do some work on our RV and I took him over to meet Carl. Carl took him to the tool shed and fixed what needed fixing. My husband is quite taken with him too. Truth be told, we were worried about being outsiders but he has really put that fear to rest.

oh yeah, I forgot to say that Carl said when we live there he expects to be invited to all our big parties. I told him that when we lived there I would invite him and the misses over for a nice dinner of Baked Ziti. He screwed up his face and said "baked what?" I repeated Ziti and he said "it don't have blackbird in it, does it?" I cracked up and explained it was a type of pasta dish with ground beef, noodles, sauce and cheese. He looked relieved and said he went to someone's house in LA and they served him a stew made of crow, gave him the creeps.

I had almost forgoten what neighbors were way out here. I live in the middle of a hay field and we are the only ones on this side of the road either way for a few miles. Across the road up the hill are I guess our closest ones. They are very busy people. I've talked to them a few times when I've needed animal help. They've got chicken houses, horses and cattle. She mows their huge front acres about every other day and we wave.

The other neighbors are across the road, too, and they own the hay field that surrounds our property. They let me use the 2 acre pasture next to us for extra animal space. They are very busy people, too.

Mostly this is big farm families that have lived here all their lives. Lots of daries and hay fields.

But I will say that if I ever need help, they are here. But kind of hard to feel like we belong still after 4 years.
