Does anyone have a cat that tends to get several UTI a year? The vet told me it is often due to the pet food and the high ash content. For about a year I was feeding her Good Life cat food and she only had one UTI while on it. Last month I switched to Diamond cat food and now she is dealing with another UTI. I wonder if it is the new food or just time for her to get another one? She is horrible to get medicine into and I'm not controlling this bout very well. I can't give her pills because she spits them out and won't eat them if I stick them in food. The liquid is just as hard to get into her and she has been spitting most of it out. I tried mixing it in milk, tuna, etc. but she leaves it for hours and won't touch it and then our other cat gets ahold of it. Ugh!
So, has anyone found a food that works for a cat like this? Or another supplement that I could give her daily? Sometimes when I notice her going to the litterbox a lot I can ward off the infection by putting opening a capsule of cranberry into tuna and she will eat that. Is that maybe something I should be doing for her daily, whether she has an infection or not? I also just put some apple cider vinegar in her water since that is supposed to help get rid of the bad stuff in her bladder. Should I do this all the time? Any help?! Thanks!

My cat Max had a UTI last year. I did some research and found out most people think it is because of the dry cat food. He still gets some dry, Prescription Diet C/D but now he gets his share of canned food. He loves it and it also gets water into his system. He doesn't drink much water. So far, no reoccurences of UTI. You have to get moisture into them. Try chicken broth.
There is a syringe type thing you can get at the vets to help you give pills. It works.

I agree with the moisture thing. Cats who are fed dry cat food need more water and sometimes they just don't drink enough. Canned cat food has more moisture and is not so tough on their systems. This is especially important for neutered males. My Siamese (r.i.p.) got them as well and it can be a very serious thing. Dry cat food tends to cause struvite crystals (sp)in their little systems. At least that is what the vet told me. I wish you the best with your kitty. Let us know how things work out for you okay?

Good luck with your kitty. I tried the syriunge thing. OMG!!!! My cat showed me who was the boss!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for the replies! I did some research on the internet last night and came up with the moisture thing as well. So now to supplement their dry food I will feed her some canned food each day as well. I'll update you all in a few weeks to see if it makes a difference. She seems to be doing a little better today. I've been wrapping her up in a towel and trying to get some medicine in her mouth. She still spits most of it out but there must be some of it getting into her.

Elizabeth, I have the book titled Natural Pet Cures by Dr. John Heinerman right here. Let me share an excerpt of what he says about uti's in cats:
"An animal with urinary tract discomforts should be placed on a liquid fast and given no solid foods for several days until the condition shows indications of clearing up."
He goes on to give a recipe to use. I will post the recipe for you in case you wish to use it.

Here is the recipe for UTI in Cats by: Dr. John Heinerman
Kitty Broth:
1/4 cup cooked brown rice
2 inch slice of carrot
2 inch piece turnip
2 inch piece celery with leaves
1 cup clear fish broth, boiling
5 drops of liquid Kyolic aged garlic extract (see health food store)
3 drops of liquid ConcenTrace (see health food store)
Add ingredients to Vita-Mix blender (or your own blender) in the order given except for the brown rice. Run the blender for 2 minutes. Stop and add the rice. Run for an additional 25 seconds. Let cool, if necessary. Serve your cat only a small portion of this, refrigerate the rest. An ailing cat should be fed only once a day, and the broth should not be allowed to remain in the dish for longer than an hour. Let the animal get a little more hungry before setting another hellping out, so nothing is wasted.
