I'm getting some in the next week or two. We are so excited. I grew up with chickens but haven't had any of my own. Any tips?

Warmly, Lara

We usually get our chicks in early spring. Our biggest problem is keeping them warm. It needs to be 95 degrees the first week then drop 5 degrees every week after. Feed and water, that is about all we do.

Thanks for the reply! These have been in a brooder for a week or two already..I am thinking that I may give them two more weeks before I pick them up and forgo the hassle of those first 4 weeks. Does anyone know if there will be any growing concerns with getting chicks in the fall?

Thanks in advance!

Check out Backyard Chicken's "Chick Raising 101" guide for good info, and their forums as well:

Thanks! I have been reading Storeys Guide to raising chickens and Practical Poultry. I will check this out as well. I decided to pick the chicks up this sunday, I got a heat lamp and made a brooder, we can't wait :)

If they're layers, start collecting egg boxes. If they're not, that shows you I know nothing about chickens.....
