Today was the big day. My oldest leaving home to spend a year in Europe. We had a 2 hour drive to the airport in Louisville and she was nervous worrying that she was going to miss her flight even though we arrived 2 hrs early.
My youngest Miss K (aka. the drama queen) kept telling her sister that she was going to miss her and how awful it was that Miss A was leaving her for a whole year. So there were tears, but that was a good thing because the TSA folks took note and seemed to be giving Miss A special treatment when she went through security.
I've already rec'd a phone call from Miss A because her flight was delayed in Philly. She was a nervous wreck again (I think I'll suggest valium next time around). Right now she should be flying over the pond headed to Munich.
I'm just ready for her to be there so she can call and let me know she made it.

Yes, she is an exchange student. Miss A will be studying at a German University first semester and will be teaching English as a second language in Slovakia second semester.

I wish I had done something like that at that age!! I hope she has the time of her life and creates memories to remember forever!!

There is an interesting contrast between how girl children and boy children leave home. Has anyone else had this experience? Friends with daughters report how girls when they go off are all in tears and they call every other minute and continue to stay in touch with mom. they share stories and adventures, fears and hopes and exciting news.
Then there are the boys. Take mine for example. My youngest boy, my baby, my little blond headed angel (well, ok that was 16 years ago, but only yesterday!) left to go to college on Saturday. Doesn't want mom to bother driving him, or being there, or even knowing the schedule for fear that I would show UP. (would I do that?). Well, I let him go, I was upset not to be there for this momentous day, upset that he didn't want me there (He CLAIMS that he didn't want to trouble me). No tears...just walks away. I heard from him once for about five minutes that evening. Havn't heard a peep since. Is this NORMAL?
In fairness to boys, my older son wasn't quite as independent. He wanted me to go with him but five minutes into the day, it's bye mom, catch later (in about ten years!). They hardly call. My girlfriends girls call...why don't boys call...a mother misses her boys....when they are gone. When they are home...well...different story!

Donna- I not big on flying! So I use Nerve Tonic by Hylands its homopathic melts under the tongue, it helped me fly from Los Angeles to NYC. Also LA to Puerto Rico and when we went to Hawaii (all this flying was this year!!) I am gonna use it in 2 weeks to go to Maine. I like it cause it is not "drugs" so I feel okay. I use it to when I feel really stressed out or have to drive the LA freeways!!!

| She is teaching in Slovakia? Wow how neat! I was born in the Czech Republic and the Czech and Slovak Republics were Czechoslovakia until about 1991, almost 2 years after communism fell. If she needs any help translating anything let me know, Slovak and Czech are kind of like northern and southern dialects in the states. How neat for her. I would be curious to hear about her time there and what she saw/experienced. You must be so proud!! |

Hello Donna! What an exciting experience for your daughter! I am in college myself and just returned from studying abroad in mexico for 6 weeks. It was the longest time I have ever spent away from home...even though it's nothing compared to a year. She is going to have so much fun and meet new friends and learn new things. I am excited for her! I missed home a lot while I was gone, but I had some great experiences.

Pavla, I am so happy to meet someone who knows where she is going to be living. Well her "boyfriend" who is from Slovakia lives there and his family helped her set up the internship and secured living arrangements. I will keep you posted on her adventures. I'm thinking of visiting her while she is living in Slovakia, but I have a few months to decide.

Donna, Its hard to let them go, I know , my kids umbilical cord can stretch.....My youngest is going to France for spring break next March. My oldest left for college in 2007. But at least their doing what we raised them to do, grow up, have wings and fly.....
