I saw a penny mat in a catalog today and thought it would be nice on the table. Does anyone know how to make a penny mat?
thanks!

I am not sure but is that the same thing as a penny rug? I haven't made any but I believe they are made out of wool felt and the images are cut out and then appliqued on the "rug" using a blanket stitch. Being wool, the colors are so warm and rich, they really are works of art. Sorry I'm not much help.

I have done a few if what Audrey described is what you mean. It is really fairly simple. I will attach a picture of one I made a couple autumns ago. Mostly embroidery stitches...which I love anyhow. Wool felt is so nice to work with. There is a quilt shop north of here that sells patterns, felt and all to make them. I bet if you do a search for penny rugs or mats something will come up (instructions I mean)..meanwhile what exactly did you have a question about it?

I felt kinda funny posting that picture here..but didn't take one without the ribbon that I could find. It is about the size of a big placemat.

I just sort of figure out the design I want, and then cut out the wool felt peices and arrange them until I like it. I use two layers of felt for the backing and then pin the pieces on and applique them on using a blanket stitch, usually, with embroidery floss. I tend to like things primitive or simple so my designs are simple...I know there are alot more complicated ones but the idea is the same..just applique them on. Do you embroider at all Laura? or if you can handsew you could certainly learn to do this..not a hard craft.

Laura,
Here is a website to a local quilt shop specializing in wool/penny rugs. You can order kits and patterns from them. Hope this helps!
