We changed the way our bed is setup and I can no longer use the bedskirt I have that lies inbetween the box spring and mattress (traditional bedskirt). Does anyone have other creative ways of adding a bedskirt to a bed?

Is the bed set up in a way that prevents you from inserting something between the matress and box spring? Not sure . . . or are you just changing up the bedlinen colors, etc.?

Yes, it's now setup differently and I can't insert the skirt between the matress and bed! Sorry, I don't think I worded the original question very well.

Can you do something with velcro on the inside of the bedframe? Because I like the look of a tailored bedskirt I used a metalasse spread (found for $5 at the thrift! made by Ralph Lauren), and it has the right weight to hang very flat and looks great. Mine is just put under the mattress and hangs down on three sides (no footboard). You might be able to do something similar, making long straight pieces and velcro-ing them onto the bedframe or something?

what about taking a length of elastic that is about 2-3 inches shorter than enough to encircle your box spring, then cutting and sewing fabric (with hems all around) that is about twice the length of the circumference of your box springs (if you want it ruffled- if you want it to hang straight then make it only minimally larger than the box springs)
Then sew the fabric to the elastic. For ruffling, just stretch the elastic tight as you sew. As the elastic relaxes, it will automatically ruffle your bed skirt. Then stretch the elastic around the box springs. Because you cut the elastic shorter than the box spring circumference, it should stretch to fit and be tight enough to stay up.

Thanks so much Katie and Alee! Those are great ideas that I wouldn't have thought of....The bed has a wooden frame all around and I could make either technique work....I just checked the bedframe and I think the elastic idea would probably work best but I'm going to look at the fabric I have before I decide.

When we got an old iron bed from my great-uncle, we couldn't use our bedskirt anymore. I just bought a sheet, measured the two sides and the foot of the bed, then made 3 separate skirts (one for each side). I added about 2 inches to the length, then attached velcro to the box springs (I put it on top of the springs to make sure they didn't show at all), and added velcro to the skirts then stuck them on. The whole project cost less than $5!

You could cut an existing besdkirt above the gathered fabric all round and then put elastic on it. It would save you the time of doing the gathering and hemming yourself.

Thanks...I'm thinking after looking at the different options and the fact that I have a bedskirt already and don't want to buy another one, that this is my best option. I like the bedskirt I have and it would be easy to convert with the elastic.

I saw a great idea using tea towels stitched onto a length of elastic. I also did something similar to that with my dauighters room when she was littel using LOTS and LOTS of tulle! In pink and purple no less! UGH!

You're a brave woman to sew all the tulle!! I like the dishtowel idea though....it would look great if I used linen dishtowels....great idea!

My husband hates ruffled bed skirts, so when I made the one I mentioned above, I didn't gather it at all. But, to add a little femininity, I found an old lace tablecloth that had holes in it (the holes were all in the middle section), and put that between the box springs and the mattress so that there's about 6-8 inches of the lace showing all around the bed over the bed skirt. Looks really pretty, if I do say so myself!
