What brand of embroidery thread do you use?

I use mostly DMC, but also usually at least one or two colors of Sulky in almost each of my projects.

I usually look at my pattern and go through all my thread trying to choose the perfect colors for each project.

Well, for this latest project, I have ONE and only one JP Coats bobbin of thread. I noticed it is slightly faded on one end (end of the bobbin). I'm not sure why. It's never in the sun. I keep them in a plastic DMC embroidery thread box. The lid is always closed.

I have NEVER noticed this with any of my DMC.

Granted I've probably had this bobbin of thread for maybe up to 20 years. (I don't remember when I bought it, but I started X-stitching when I was around 10 years old, I'm now 32. That's when I began to collect thread. Once I buy a color there's very FEW colors, I have ever replaced, just cause I rarely run out of that color. Only a very few that are used a LOT that ever has had to be replaced.)

However, at the same time I've had a LOT of this DMC floss the same amount of time as that JP Coats, and I have NEVER noticed it to fade like that.

As for the sulky I will admit it's only been in my collection the last two years, as it's a new discovery for me. It's not the sulky thread for sewing machines, this is the kind for embroidery. And it's varigated. So I don't know if it will do that or not either. But, I've only heard raves about sulky so I'm not too worried about it.

Well, looks like I have to make a trip to the store! And I have no gas money, so maybe soon. I was planning a trip to a cross stitch store I just discovered a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't had the gas money to go. So I'll have to wait till pay day. *sigh*

Has any one else noticed this with their threads? The fading, and if so what brand was it? I want to avoid it!

I now use only DMC but have used JP Coats in the past and still have a basket full of it. I haven't noticed any fading yet, and some of the Coats has the 5 cent price tag on it and is at least 40 years old. I've never heard of Sulkey embroidery thread; where do you get it?

Sulky for embroidery is only sold at quilt, and sewing machine and vacuum stores, you will not see it in regular chain stores.

Go to http://www.sulky.com/thread/thread_cotton.php

I mainly use the blendables. The 30 wt is supposed to the same as 2 strands of DMC in weight. But, I still like to double it. As I don't like it that thin. It doesn't seem to me to really be the same thickness of 2 strands of DMC in my opinion. But, a lot of people just use one strand of the 30 wt and is fine with it.

I get it on sale usually. They don't have official sales on it. (The stores).

But, for instance the quilting store in Wichita, Kansas where my parents live, had a radio station deal, where from the radio station you could buy 50 dollar gift certicates for only 25.00! I bought them! Then when I went into the store she was having a sale where you choose a lollipop off a tree, and opened it, and that told you what percentage you would get off your entire purchase. I happened to get the 40% off lollipop! So First of all I only paid 50% off for the gift certificate then I got a additional 40% off that! I couldn't beat that! lol I was able to get like 30 bobbins of the blendables for 25 dollars! They have so many yards, that it comes out very cheap per the yard, compared to DMC.

My "local" quilt shop (30 miles away) only has machine threads, but once a year I take a trip to Laci's and it's almost that time so I'll look there for it. I stocked up on DMC when WalMart decided not to have embroidery stuff anymore and sold it for 10 cents each; I think I bought about $20 worth, which will last me several more lifetimes.

Do you have the number of the JP Coats that you need? I could look through my stash and see if I have it.

I use DMC mostly, but have recently discovered size 8 perle cotton, it is lovely to work with and looks so nice. It is the weight maybe like 3 strands of floss, but it is easier to sew with (and easier to thread). Jenny, I just looked at desertsky, you are right, she does have some lovely stuff.
I have an old Chinese sewing basket I bought years ago, filled with thread, all of it the same color, kind of green brown, I expect if I ever sew with it, it will be rotten, but you never know...

I do use the DMC of course...I do love however enjoy using mostly the lovely varigated/hand-dyed threads. 2 brands that I like to use are Gentle Arts sampler threads (that are made here in the Columbus area - in New Albany)....http://www.thegentleart.com/ga/home.asp and Weeks Dye Works http://www.weeksdyeworks.com/ ....I will also use silk threads that are included in the Shepherd's Bush kits http://www.shepherdsbush.net/

Perle cotton is nice to use sometimes but I have to use shorter lengths of it than 6-strand. I'm currently using perle cotton on a cutwork dresser scarf. My first attempt at cutwork; it's very time consuming and I have to do it using a magnified lamp. Finding it locally in colors other than black, white, and ecru is a problem so on my annual visits to Laci's I get a few new colors each time.

I use DMC. I also stocked up when Wal-Mart quit carrying XS supplies. I spent lots but got lots too! I even had my MIL in IA stop at her store! I have enough to last, but find I am still needing other colors. Oh well, I don't mind buying more floss ;)

Oh yes, it was fun! DH even helped and told me 'Get more than one of each color!' How sweet! lol
It was so neat to see all those color together.. and the cashier had a heck of a time scaning them. Had to do each one seperate...

Course it was bad in a way because now I have to travel farther for XS supplies.. I have a Ben Franklin in town but they only carry floss. I've bought the last of their fabric and towels and I don't know if they will be ordering any more :(

Awe, I thought Ben Franklin was the same as Hobby Lobby. I hope they don't stop selling the stuff! UHG!

You can get the towels at ColonialPatterns.com but I don't know if they are any good. I plan on trying them out though.

Oh and yes the casheirs. lol That was funny with me too. Boy was it difficult. It was too bad they had to scan each of them. Grrr. She would be scanning and scanning. One time I bought over 200! lol hahaha That took her a while! lol hahaha

However, once at Michael's I got a whole bunch! But, after she rang it all up, it wasn't the price I thought it should be! It wasn't the price that the ad I had said! And her nor the manager would let me have it for the ad price that I had! So I told her I didn't want it. You should of seen the anger in her face! Cause Michael's wasn't out of any colors, so I had went with a HUGE list! And got a LOT. All the colors I had been waiting to get! Cause I do XS too. And so with XS a lot of my patterns call for specific colors, so I had went through all my books and made a list of all the colors they listed that I didn't have......and off to Michael's I went. lol Boy were they upset! lol But, hey.....it was like 4X the price that the add said it would be! I could of afford the like 15 dollars or so I thought it would be. But not the like 45 that it had came up to! lol Awe well! lol :)
