Hi Amy!! Yep! We homeschool too! I have been doing this since the very beginning and I have one in 7th grade and one in 5th grade. I love CM! If there is anything you need that I might still have or have any homeschoolie type questions email me. It is nice to meet you! :)

Hi Amy! I'm in Lilburn and have homeschooled for 13 years! (and still standing!) My kids are now 26, 20 and 14. Only the 14 year old remains at home. I never thought the day would come! I have used Calver, Oak Meadow, Classical Education, and unschooling. I know each child learns differently so we used whatever worked. We have gotten into colleges and so far so good! I love homeschooling! It is lonely as the mom if you had a career or "life" before kids. But there are many of us great moms out there like Brenda and me and more to discover!! Maybe we need our own henhouse! Maybe "The Hens at Home"! Anyway, it is wonderful to meet you.

Hey Dana!! Nice to meet you as well. My kids are getting on up there and I might be picking your brain when graduation years roll around. I hope you don't mind. :) I really like your henhouse idea. "The Hens at Home" sounds perfect! I am new to the farm here and am curious about the badges, but sort of feel intimidated to try. I'd love to one day though.

Been homeschooling for... uh... 24 years??? Well, that's how old my oldest is anyway. Have only the 16 year old (she turns 16 on the 26th) left under the homeschool program. The 24 yo is out of college and working, the 22 year old is headed to the university this winter, the 21 yo is working and testing to become a career firefighter, the 18 yo is headed back to college this fall. I have 4 of the 5 living at home. I have used canned curriculum, "gathered" curriculum, straight up workbooks, un schooling, life-schooling, part time high school/homeschool programs, college classes, etc. Our 21 yo used the basic firefighter curriculum for school for most of one year as his "foundation". The thing I love most about homeschooling is that we have been able to focus on the needs of the individual child. Homeschooling, not always easy, but definetly worth it!!

Hi girls,
I don't have children but my sister has three little ones (1,3 and 5)and she is starting the homeschool "process" with the 5 year old. She just recv'd those counting blocks (which do look very neat).
I can pass them along to her....any words of wisdom, links of interest, etc....would be great to hear. I am actually trying to get her onto the Farmgirl Connection too.

Amy, www.starfall.com has a free online phonics program that she can use to supplement or even use as a stand alone. www.mathusee.com has free printable worksheets as well as free online drills starting with simple addition. A really nice one is www.enchantedlearning.com this is a pay site but they offer some freebies as well. www.sitesforteachers will keep her busy for a long time just looking! I hope this helps. There are literally tons of helpful homeschool sites available.

I have 2 children, 16 and 12.5. We started homeschooling prior to my daughters start of 4th grade and my son has always been at home. We have used a ton of Oak Meadow, Saxon Math and some Switched on Schoolhouse. Overall we have always been pretty eclectic and have learned to just go with the natural flow of things. One child is very hands on and the other has a memory I would love to have. He sees it once and it is there for good. When they were little it was so much easier but now that they are older it can definitly have its challenges. Althugh we wouldn't change it for the world. I have always given my children the option of public school so that they could never come back to me and say they hated homeschooling and why did I make them do it. They always choose home thankfully because I would cry terribly if I had to send them to our public schools.
I love the idea of the hen house. Keep me posted if you get one set up!!

I have always homeschooled our children. We are using more and more Charlotte Mason's methods. Do you get The Old Schoolhouse magazine? this issue are several articles regarding the CM method. I did 2 reviews on my blog- 1 on the Old Schoolhouse magazine- digital version and the other on the Schoolhouse planner which I just love. Click on the link in my sig line for my vintage home.

What a great group of HS sisters we have! When is everyone starting? My Ivey (14) will start thinking about educational things (math and german) after Labor Day. She goes to Dragon Con each year with her uncle over Labor Day weekend. That is my favorite weekend! My husband is back teaching at Emory University, my middle daughter is back at college and Miss Ivey is away! The only downside for me of homeschooling is always having someone around! This woman needs a little alone time each year! How about ya'll?

Well I have to say, horray for all of you who Homeschool. I am sure there are ups and downs. I never did it, although when the girls were younger I thought I wanted too. What stopped me? I am a clean freak, I would probably say something like, 'lets do the dishes then we'll do math'. I did however do a nursery school preschool where my daughter went to school 3 days per week, I worked 3 days per month and paid 30.00 / month. That was informative to me as a parent.
I used to give tours at the local sugar factory and the ones I liked best, were the homeschoolers, they always asked the most brilliant questions, such as time of processing, % of sugar content, while other shcool age kids mostly asked what does it taste like.

I'm up for the challenge of a "Hens at Home" henhouse. Don't know what all I need to do, but I can figure that out. Any one interested?

Hey Kim, We actually have a class like that! I call it Home Ec. One day, I told my kids, "today we are gonna start a new class." They ask me, "what kind of class is it?" and I told them, "it's called Home Economics class." The kids said to me, "what do we do in Home Economics?" and I said, "it is where you help me clean up the house!" They about fell over from shock! LOL!! :) I thought you'd get a kick out of that. Really though, they honestly do need to know those sorts of skills for when they have their own own.

I just had to check in here to see if Mom (Levisgrammy) posted. She valiantly put up with us...I mean homeschooled the three of us since my baby brother (20 now) was in 2nd grade. What a great chance to instill in your children the value of home and education and (even for some us who choose that of christian ethics)from the very start. My poor Mom had so much "Unteaching" to do before we could be really taught! Hubby and I are planning on homeschooling our younguns' when they get of ages. We have a couple of years, but its never too soon to start gathering up materials and getting into the routines right now. So glad to see other schooling mommys on here! hugs jess

I homeschool 2 of mine and have done this for 3yrs this makes our 4th yr. I really like knowing whats going inside their brains. Also keeps alot of bad influences out of the way as well. Hope you will have a great 1st year!! Blessings, Karen

We are going on year five. It has had up and downs, but I/we love it. I would be proud to be part of a Hens at Home chapter. We start back on the 25th. We are with a charter, but do much along CM lines. We have a wonderful teacher who understands that learning takes place everyplace! She's very supportive of "alternative methods". Sharon

Bless all you homeschool mothers. And double bless anyone teaching PHONICS. My mother taught me phonics before I went to public school. It was one of the blessings she gave me. Makes spelling and pronouncing words so much easier. My ex was sight taught and it was interesting to hear him reading aloud.
Keep up the good work Mom/Teachers. I also hope that manners are part of your curriculum.

Manners are sorely missing from our world these days! Our family has always had tea in the afternoon since my first kiddo was 6 or so. That was a perfect time to stress manners! Even tho the early teas were casual warm beverage with animal crackers they run the gammut now that they are all grown up. It is important to us that the kids know what is expected in any social situation - not to be snooty but to feel comfortable no matter what they are doing. And manners really do make working with bosses and coworkers easier! Plus growing up in the south means you learn the manners of the place you live. That means "ma'm" and "sir" as well!

I was homeschooled from sixth grade to graduation. I am now a second gerneration homeschooler since we will be starting homeschooling next week. It's hard to believe that I already have a duaghter old enough for Kindergarton! We will be using a lot of Rod and Staff and Pathway workbooks for her. -Elizabeth |
