Dawn, I wish I could help...I tried many herbal remedies and ended up just giving up and giving in to what my doctor recommended (a pharm). I did acupuncture, I did meditation, but nothing worked and I missed work often. A lot of my issue was stress, and now I have ended that issue (sortof) I don't have them nearly as much--maybe once or twice a year.
I wish you luck and I hope you can kick these.

Dawn The neti pot only makes mine worse and gives me a sinus infection. I used a product call A.S.A.P. I know that it is available under a new product name. I haven't use it for a year or so. It is taken 2 at on set and then 1 every hour afterwards up to 6? Blue box. Awesome stuff! All natural!!!!!!!! Worked just as good as any of my RX's and I had the heavy duty stuff. Try some Camille or red tea, lavender aromatherapy, sleep. My Zen thoughts are with you. UMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm111111

I would also try Rescue Remedy and cold ice packs. Other than that, the only thing I can think of is the over the counter pain meds or prescription.

My doctor told me about a drug (prescription) for severe migraine patients that they give to people who have seizures. Mine weren't severe enough to try it but he said that in severe cases this is a God send. I'm so sorry but I can't remember the name of it. The doctor has given me a prescription for Phenergan (vomiting pills) and yes, they knock me out, but when I wake up it's not as bad. I can get really sick from migraines. I'm praying you get rid of them or find a rememdy that works. God's grace be with you. Susan |

Dawn, I'm so sorry to hear you are in pain. I know all about migraine issues. I have done just about everything as well including cafregot suppositories, imitrex, feverfew, acupuncture, shots in the spine, biofeedback, and massage.... Ice baby...ice and sleep...oh, and dark.
I know when you are in the throws of a full blown migraine, it's hard to de-stress, but you really have to. Remember to breathe! Try this too...a little tiger balm on your forehead (do NOT get it in your eyes!!!!!!) and at the base of your skull (or on the bones right above your ears)... also see if you can get someone to pinch the fatty part of your hand between your thumb and index finger. This is a pressure point that can relieve some of the pain. It's not as effective on yourself but you can do it.
Over the long haul, I did seem to think that my migraines were related to hormones. This might be something to talk about with your doctor. I also now have learned to distinguish between what is a migraine and what is a tension headache...although the latter can trigger a migraine.
When they were at their worst, it was a trip to the ER for demerol or some equally knock-you-out narcotic. Vicodin is a staple at my house for the really bad stuff these days, although I rarely use it, being able to get the ice/sleep/dark that I need. I can sorta function on 1/2 tab at work if I have too, but not too easily. It just makes me "dull". I have had a shot of Toradol at the hospital before. That worked well to get things under control to be able to get home.
I really hope you find something that works for you. I know how debilitating those darn things can be...by the way, I think the seizure med that Susan is referring to is Topamax.
BTW, all of these hard drugs come with their own side effects and you should have a hearty discussion with your doctor about the pros/cons. I know when you are in that kind of pain...it all sounds fine but really some of them have some nasty consequences that you may/may not find worse than your migraine!
Take care! |

Try takng 2 magnesium pills right at the onset of a headache. Do NOT WAIT for it to get to a full migraine. Take when you first notice the pain. This doesn't take away my headaches totally but usually keeps mine from progressing to a migraine. If it is particularly bad I will also take 1 BC powder. I used to pop pills like there was no tomorrow and took Imatrex for the migraines. Other than a BC maybe once a month I am now pill free! Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant and slight blood thinner so of course don't use it if you have other health issues that this can effect.

Dawn, I suggest that you see a specialist and actually find out what is triggering these headaches. It could be something as easy as a food alergy, a deficency or even hormones. Yet there could be something seriously wrong. I have almost completely taken processed foods out of my life and found that this made a big difference on the intensity of my migranes. My migranes are mainly hormonal now and I usually only get 1 a month unless I get sloppy with my eating habits. Good Luck with this and I hope you can get it figured out.

Went to doc today, I have drugs. Although I am going to try the magnesium pills. Some other stuff going on too...thank you for all your advice. I have ice, dark, phenergan, and quiet. Luckily, today is not as bad as yesterday.

I too am aware of the side effects of drugs for migraines and every other ailment. I have a friend who never had a headache let alone amigraine in her life until she hit about 50 years of age. Her doctor told her that it was the change of life. She's almost sixty now and though not as often = she still gets them. She can be in bed for days. I am praying that you are feeling better real soon. I wish I could visit you to help you through this. Susan |

I get migraines every once in a while where my vision goes out on me. I drink a bunch of water and that helps mine. Also, my boss had a migraine one day and she stuck a chunk of organic DARK chocolate against her cheek (inside her mouth lol) and her's was gone in about 20 minutes. Probably something with the caffine I'm guessin'..... I always knew chocolate would fix everything!

I have been having problems with migraines this week. I always get headaches easily but these have been migraines..huge difference. I have just been taking Excedrin..my pain med of choice. It helps, but then quiet and dark help the most..which is in short supply here in the summer with 4 kids home. I may try that chocolate thing too!!

Awww...Susan that is so sweet of you to want to visit me. I am doing really well today. I honestly think i have allergies to certain perfumes. We have a girl in the office at the hatchery and I swear I can TASTE it. She doesnt spritz it, she bathes in it! I actually went to the ofice manager and asked if he could put a memo out that no one could wear perfume--he didnt want to offend anyone so he put out a memo that no one could wear perfume for a week. Well its day 2 and no headache! I did get the magnesium pills, which i have heard are good for fibromyalgia sufferers (which I have). I am also going to skip done the candy aisle for some lucsious dark chocolate....Mmmmmmmm! Jenny, I have also gotten relief from dabbing eppermint oil on my temples, and locking the door to keep the kids outside..haha, just kidding on that one! Last but not least, I AM going to have some tests done at teh docs. Just to be sure....

Dawn...I'm so glad you are feeling better. Sometimes it just takes a while to figure out what works. That whole perfume thing is a hard one. I have some sensitivity to stuff like that too. There is a woman in my office who smokes and when she comes in, the whole office smells! I get used to it after a bit but at first it's really strong. I don't do well with perfumes on me either. A tiny (and I mean dab) of lavender or jasmine is about all I need, and both seem to make me feel better, not sick. I've never tried the dark chocolate thing but I have slammed a coke or two for the caffeine. BUT only after I've held the icy cold can to my head for a while!!!! |

I keep mine at bay by going to the chiro, Imitrex, Excedrine, no caffine and lots of water. Mine are caused by stress and tension. If I feel pain in my neck, I go to the chiro. He has even stopped at my house and fixed it on the way to play golf. I didn't take my excedrine soon enough and it was agony. He adjusted my neck, and I went right to sleep, woke up with no headache.

My daughter is taking Topamax (it's the anti-seizure medication someone mentioned before)and has a VERY expensive new migraine medication because Imitrex just made her sick. The neurologist also has her taking extra B-2. When she gets a migraine, she can be sick for a week even after the initial headache subsides. Thank heaven for homeschool.
For me, I have combination headaches. Mine are mostly chronic tension, with a migraine thrown in for good measure. I have spent the last year trying different daily medications to try to get rid of them once and for all with not much luck. Imitrex made me sicker than the migraine. I use Fioricet for most tension headaches now as I need it, usually if I can catch it early enough I can knock down the intensity of the migraine. Depending on what I have eaten, what time of day it is, and a few other factors, things like pressure points between the thumb and first finger work, feverfew, a few sips of Dr. Pepper with some ibuprofen and tylenol, lavendar on the temples, cold compress over the eyes, and a general stoppage of activity......
My heart goes out to those who suffer from headaches. I can honestly say... I know how you feel. I have headaches for weeks at the time and it becomes so very exhausting because a mom still has to function!!

Lillian, I have the same problem with food additives. For me, the trigger is MSG. Not only does it give me a headache for days (no noise, dark room and a/c) but it also give me nasty mood swings. I will have to try the peppermint oil thing.

Thank you Angie! Topamax is the medicine I was speaking of in an earlier comment about migraines. People who don't have migraines don't understand the full knock out that happens in our bodies. If somebody told me that eating live fish bait would work I would do that just to relieve the incredible pain! Even after the headache is gone I still feel wretched. I hope you're daughter feels better and I am glad that she is homeschooled so that she can just take it easy without pushing herself! Susan |

I'll tell you I NEVER have headaches and I have had 2, 2 days in a row now usually at the end of the day after being outside most of the day and my nose gets stuffed up ...I think I heard them say the pollen count here is really high right now and I don't even have any allergies! Well...I didn't have allergies but they say as you age you can get them...anyway...whatever is aggravating me who never gets headaches could REALLY be causing yours to blossom big time! I haven't taken anything because it usually comes late in the day and then I go to sleep and it's gone in the morning. Could it be AC??? I have the AC on in the house. I hope you gals are feeling better SOON... a migraine must be just awful!

I heard that if you take a tea made from the feverfew plant and drink it everyday it is suppose to help with migrains. It doesnt taste very good so had peppermint to it.
