I also have the book Vintage Crochet and love it! I like to make shawls and wraps. I've made a few sweaters but I'm not crazy about making things with sleeves. And afghans take too long! I'm getting ready to start a shawl in natural blend yarn that will be lightweight for Fall.

Kim, I was looking at your photobucket crocheted things~I love the striped sweater nevertheless (since it has sleeves, I'm WITH you there)
I think that's something I might be able to make. ;)
Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks Bonne! That one I would make again. The sleeves are made right along with the top of the sweater. It was very easy and quick. It's from the book, Big Hook Crochet by House of White Birches. It uses Noro Iro yarn which was just amazing to crochet with!

Speaking of yarns that are good (or not) to crochet with, I'm curious about how many of you use craft store type yarn (Lion, Caron, etc.) and how many use fancy schmancy yarns. I wish I could afford the really lovely hand-dyed yarn but at the moment my stash is full of Lion. I have a ton of Lion's homespun, which I really don't like to work with, and some Caron Spa yarn that I'm planning to use for something cozy for fall. Any yarn recommendations from those who shop off the shelf?

you know that homespun is tuff...my sister made sweaters for 4 kids out of it..knitted, but i could not do it, it was too hard to work with.

cotton has been nice to me lately.

i am currently using a lion brand called micro spun that is ooh so soft but tends to be too easy to split if you arent careful. i have no clue how it washes but i would assume very well. it is "an ultra soft microfiber sports yarn. i havent used any in so long i cant remember what oens i have liked the best. lately i can only stand the feel of a super soft yarn no matter what! peace connie in alaska

I can't afford "yarn shop" prices by any stretch, so I'm an off the shelf buyer. Mostly Hobby Lobby store brand and only then when they have it on sale. I pay 99-1.99 a skein~never more. I wait for the weekly sale flyer and decide what I can get (or not). their online store is www.craftsetc.com They sometimes run sales too. The "I Love This Yarn" by Yarn Bee is really nice and soft~just loaded up on some last week.

Hi Kimberly:
I crochet afghans and hats. I work on crocheting hats all year long, and before the cool or cold weather hits, I donate all the crocheted hats to the homeless. I can't just sit and watch TV, or whatever. My hands have to be busy. That's what I do.

bonne, dont feel lonesome. while i go to the yarn stores and dream i buy at walmart, micheals or joannes. i just got 100% cotton (10 skeins!) at micheals for $1 each. thats my kind of price lol. occasionally i will splurge and pay $2.59 for a skein of somethign really special but thats not often. i woudl give my eyeteeth (if i had any lol) to work with some of that soy silk but whoaaa that stuff is pricey! peace connie in alaska

I heard Homespun in easier to knit with than to crochet with. I only use it if I double it with another lightweight yarn. I love Patons yarn and Bernat...both off the shelf. Lion WoolEase is great and Patons Washable Wool comes in great colors. Have you tried any of those?

Just wanted to say that I buy my 'expensive' yarns on sale! I'm a bargain shopper and find great deals on Ebay. Also the local yarn stores have a 20% off everything in the store sale about every 3 months. That's when I get Noro and the other more expensive stuff that I've been wanting to try!

I am currently joining 54 squares into a 6 x 9 arrangement--getting an afghan finished that I started last May. I'm a new crocheter, and I'm very pleased with this project--it's a Maggie Weldon pattern. But, I have so many ends to weave in, as each block changed colours about 6 times! It sure looks pretty, though. Pastel pink, blue, yellow and lavender flowers, with mint green leaves, and ivory background. Once I get the blocks all joined, I have to go around the outside about 4 times, then it's all done!

I was able to visit the Spinrite factory outlet (Bernat, Patons, etc.) in Listowel, Ontario last spring, and got all the yarn for 35 cents/ounce. I love to dream in the fancy shops, but am a bargain shopper, too, like most ladies here!

For Fall, I am planning a few smaller projects for our charity craft sale coming up. (Hats, mittens, dishcloths, etc.)

try weaving ends in as you crochet saves hours at the end and the monotony of weaving in ends plus the will be better incorporated in to the afghan and less likely to pull out and unravel.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

Yea, I can finally join this post! Last night I started on my first washcloth. It's a stitch I hadn't done before - front and back posts - so I'm hoping to use it to get my first badge.

Marly - what a great idea to crochet hats and then donate them to the homeless. I'm going to have to do that. You are so thoughtful!

God bless -

Well ladies,

My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was about 7 or 8 years old and I never learned to do more than a single chain until this year! Can you believe that! But now that I'm figuring it all out, I can't stop! I've just started making baby items for my soon to come etsy shop and I only wish I had babies again! My three are all too big! I just finished the cutest little newsboy cap and am working on a blanket to match. I too have to shop off the bargain shelves but I don't mind, not yet anyway. I just got started!

Speaking of monotony, how do you all handle finishing patterns that are really repetitious? Or are you smart enough not to start one! :) I'm working on a chevron blanket now that I like but wow is it ever the same stitch over and over and over.

I usually also have some type of small quick project going on the side so when I get tired of the big project I just go back to the small one and get some satisfaction that way. I've had up to 4 projects going at one time because I get bored real quick!

That's great!! You can also make dog/cat blankets to donate to local shelters if you have alot of extra yarn to use up.

with big projects I work on them while watching movies so I do something else at the same time. Also i have side projects to distract me every now and again. Usually big projects I do for myself so I don't give my self a set date when they have to be done.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

I am working on two very different kinds of squares for afghans. I have lots of leftover yarn amoung the new yarn and what I have is great for the squares. I think it is so neat to hear what everyone else is working on. Wishing everyone the best of luck with their projects!

Have you checked out www.smileysyarns.com they have fantastic internet sales. You have to purchase a minimum of $40. But they have some great stuff. One of the gals on HAIN told me about it. I about choked the other day when I went looking for a ball of self striping yarn to learn to make a pair of socks. It's 15-25 bucks! Holy cow. I am a cheap yarn user for sure.

I LOVE nice yarn, and whenever I have money, that's usually what I buy! Recently, I bought $15 a skien sock yarn, and a few months ago, I bought $10 a skien organic color-grown cotton for shawls. I have been called a "yarn snob!" I do use WalMart yarn (booo!) for making rugs.

Right now I am crocheting a lap throw for my aunt in the hospital, an afghan I've been working on off and on for the past year, a bunch of dishcloths, and a doily! I always have a ton of projects going on at once....those I just listed don't include my knitting! I love making doilies, but I usually don't have time to just sit and crochet, so most of the time I work on stuff that I can do while watching a movie, or something like that. With that said, I worked on a doily last night while I watched a movie....no telling if it's right or not!
