Well, I've been offline for a week or so, as we have been busy doing some renovation planning and shopping for the house we are fixing up at the farm. Everything takes time and money, doesn't it?

We are at the point of choosing new appliances, and DH (bless him!) and I spent ALL DAY Saturday at Lowe's and Sears looking at kitchen appliances. Of course, we are now more confused than ever. So, I thought - Farmgirls! THE resource for everything from soup to nuts!

Has anyone purchased new appliances recently, or heard any good/bad stories about particular brands? We are leaning toward Kenmore, GE Profile, Kitchenaid or (unlikely due to expense and newness in the US market)Electrolux.

The good news from our 9-hour adventure is that we know that we do want:

1. Fridge with bottotm freezer; with single door or french door model. No external dispenser.
2. Duel fuel (gas range/electric oven) drop-in range.
3. Over the range microwave (serves as range hood/venting)
4. Dishwasher with delay-start, no other fancy features.

Thanks for the input, good or bad, on your experiences!

Jo

I have a dual fuel range/oven. It is a Jen-Aire. I absolutley love it. It was the one thing that I was insistant upon when we moved into our house 4 years ago. It is the one that has 5 gas burners on top and two ovens on the bottom. The one is small and the other one is large and is also a convection oven. I can not say enough good things about it! It is a little pricey but we were able to find it at less than what the mfgr. price was. http://www.jennair.com/catalog/product.jsp?parentCat=2&cat=69&prod=143

All of our appliances are Kenmore, Jen and I love them. I don't think you could go wrong--and the Sears service agreements have been wonderful for little things that go wrong. They were all purchased within the last 2 years, so they're also the energy efficient appliances.

Thanks, all of you. It's so wonderful to have a "sisterhood" to plug into for these sorts of questions. I guess the really big question is, which oven makes the best Bakeover? On that side note, did any of you realize that MaryJane has a bakeover recipe on the package of Hot& Creamy cereal? Haha - DH didn't get that in his bowl this morning, instead I'm gonna use it for a bakeover crust!

The newest kitchen appliance I have is a Whirlpool Gold dishwasher, and I love it.

Do you have access to Consumer Reports? I can give you a link to my library's subscription if you need it. It's a great resource to check out when buying a big-ticket item.

Lori, that would be wonderful if you don't mind. I have tried accessing consumer reports online but they do keep asking for a membership id, etc.

I will send you an email...

Thanks!

None of my appliances match (all different brands, but all SS and black). When we built our house, we shopped around for a long time looking for good stuff and great deals. We ended up with several higher end appliances at huge discounts by waiting for floor models to be sold, and checking the 'scratch and dent' outlet for Maytag and Kitchenaid. Love all the stuff we ended up with, and if you have the time/ patience, keep checking back at places for the top notch stuff at a discount. ;)

I have a black 5 burner gas/propane Maytag stove. I HATE IT!!!!!!! you can only really use 2 burners at a time as the top is to small, the burners sizes to big to allow even heat on your pot and pans. The black top finish is a B*&^% to clean it hasn't looked clean since the day it was installed. It smears and smears no matter what I clean it with. I even had professional cleaners in to clean it and they walked away shaking there heads. It's bad very bad. I did cook on a fantastic Wolf at my last job it was great except the oven is not self cleaning. My mom has had a Jenair for ever and loves it. She really doesn't cook but ever time I have gotten the chance it was great. The oven baked very well also. I have a Maytag fridge awesome, Whirlpool Duets front loader washer and dryer wouldn't trade them for the world except when it comes to felting wool. need a top loader for that. My dishwasher is a very basic Maytag works great. We don't believe in buying expensive ones as our water destroy them all at the same rate. I have washed in Trom washer and dryer long cycles seems to take all day to wash with an extra rinse and dry clothes also VERY expensive to fix.

Boopstar! I love you!!!!!!!!!

I have the same stove/oven I believe! It's a filthy mess, and I'm so embarrassed by it. But, it's impossible to get clean! My mom visited once, and used some maricle stuff on it, and had my step father (who is much stronger then I physically) clean it. Then she went to boil eggs, and it looked the same as before my step father cleaned it! It seems to shoot oil out all over the place!!!!!!!!

Do you also notice a film of "grease" on every thing in the kitchen. Even my glass screw top jars. After only a few weeks will have a layer of grease on them! We do NOT fry anything! So this has to be the gas. The same grime that is all over the stove top! UHG!!!!!!! It's such a thick layer and is so hard to get off of anything! It's so upsetting. I had vowed I would never have another gas stove when we move (next year) I would just go with electric even though it's harder to cook in my opinion with electric. But, it's better then the filth of all these grease every where!

Also like you said I can only do two things at a time, if that on the stove top! UHG! (they have to be diagnal from each other.

It's also a Maytag, which I thought was a "good" brand. I know we spent a lot of money on it!

I thought it was how gas stoves must be, and I must be a lazy wife not knowing how to clean it. Cause my cousin in law has the exact same stove and when I visited her, her's is clean as a whistle........however I wonder if she cooks much. She also has a big strong husband (he's huge), I am not downing my husband, but physical strength is not one of his attributes, let's put it this way, he's 5' and 110 lbs! lol hahaha My cousin in law's husband is' 6'5 and around 300 lbs! lol hahaha So if she has him clean it he maybe could get more strong armed with it. But, I was too embarrassed and ashamed to ask about the "clean" aspect of it. All I commented to her about it was, I have the same oven (when I seen her's on a visit). lol And god bless my husband, said, I thought it looked familiar....I didn't recognize it. He thankfully left out the part, I didn't recognize it cause yours is so clean and ours is a filthy pig pen of orange gas grease all over the top! lol

Oh one more funny about this Maytag of a oven I have! lol hahaha I had never had a gas oven before this one. And all the ones I ever had were REALLY old, all electric but "antiques". In fact I can't even find the kind I used to have. (oven over the top of the range, and under the range was a cabinette for storing pots/pans). Before that I literally had a wood burning pot belly stove. Any way......I had never used the "self cleaning" feature on a oven before since I never had one with this feature. Well, my MIL went on and on about how "great" the self cleaning feature was. So one day I thought I would "clean" the inside, and did what I thought was right for the self cleaning feature. Well, soon, I noticed dark dark smoke in my bedroom.......I went to the kitchen and it looked like the oven was on fire. I immediately turned the "self cleaning" feature off, and then couldn't figure out how to get it to let me open the oven again! lol My husband had to figure that out. Meanwhile, while waiting for my husband to come home, I grabbed our pet rabbit, put him on the floor to save his life, and opened all the windows in the house, which immediately made smoke billow out the windows like the apt was on fire! lol I prayed the security gaurds, or other neighbors of our apt complex would not see the smoke and call 911! And the fire dept come and me, have to explain to them that I was trying to "clean" the oven! lol Oy!
